Player (snap %) - 1Q PFF/thru 2Q/thru 3Q/thru EOY (last year)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note 1 - grades are not quarterly, they are thru that specific quarter. You can glean what the Q would have likely been given the +/-. As the year continues, it takes a larger delta to move the needle.

Note 2 - grades for all players with at least 2% of snaps. Players in order of snap %.

Note 3 - 75+ grades in BLUE, sub 50 grades in RED, and this year's EOY and last year's PFF in BOLD.

Note 4 - Free agents, and their designation/type also noted
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quarterback
UFA Rivers (95.9%) - 77.0 / 73.4 / 77.8 / 77.2 (74.3)
UFA Brissett (4.3%) - 70.2 / NA / NA / 75.6 (59.2)

QB Note - Not sure we could ask much more from either one. While Rivers has had some down games (all QBs do), he's been pretty consistent, not missed a game, ranked top 10ish in most core stats, has thrown 200 yards to 9 different guys, led comebacks, and did all of that on a new team, without preseason, a Covid camp, musical chairs for most of the year at pass catcher, and a bum toe. Brissett has accepted his backup and short yardage role, and has nailed it. It's more than I had expected. Another year of both wouldn't upset me at all.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Running Back
Taylor (46.9%) - 69.0 / 65.5 / 74.8 / 83.9 (rook)  *PFF's All Rookie Team
Hines (36.0%) - 61.6 / 70.8 / 76.8 / 81.6 (63.3)
Wilkins (16.7%) - 76.4 / 74.9 / 67.3 / 67.8 (69.8)
UFA Mack (1%) 72.6 / NA / NA / 72.6 (69.5)

RB Note - The Taylor haters have to be pretty surprised lol. All rook team, 1100+ yards rushing, 1468 yards from scrimmage, highest catch % in the NFL of all positions, and an 80+ PFF grade.... And all that after a relatively slow start in terms of touches/snaps. Wow. Hines killed it too all year in both rushing and catching for an APB (862 yards from scrimmage, + another 370 yards returning). Another wow. While Wilkins is overlooked, he's a great pure backup option, and does very well late in games. Like QB, can't ask for much more given the situation with Mack going down early.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tight End
Doyle (49.5%) - 54.5 / 53.7 / 58.0 / 66.9 (69.2)
ERFA MAC (46.1%) - 93.1 / 90.5 / 82.6 / 78.3 (67.3)
UFA Burton (34.5%) - 59.8 / 69.8 / 72.3 / 66.7 (49.2)
Togiai (6.6%) - 48.5 / NA / NA / 48.2 (rook)

TE Note - I really like this group. I know Reich has not targeted or emphasized TE a lot this year, but they're a pretty darn good group. I think MAC could do a lot more in the receiving game (especially deeper), and Doyle is just Mr. Consistent. Burton is more of an HB/slot/gadget guy, but used appropriately, he's found his niche. It was refreshing to finally see the TEs used more yesterday. Should have been used more in the RZ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wide Receiver
RFA Pascal (76.5%) - 64.7 / 61.2 / 61.0 / 64.2 (73.7)
Pittman (64.2%) - 61.3 / 61.6 / 60.0 / 62.6 (rook)
UFA Hilton (63.1%) - 67.7 / 66.0 / 73.6 / 77.7 (75.1)
Waived Johnson (27.9%) - 65.3 / 65.4 / 63.4 / 63.0 (59.8)
Dulin (9.6%) - 67.3 / 66.7 / 65.0 / 60.9 (59.3)
Harris (7.5%) - NA / 86.0 / 76.5 / 71.8 (rook)
PS Fountain (5.9%) - 66.1 / 61.1 / NA / 61.1 (INJ)
IR Campbell - NA, but 5.8% of snaps, and 72.8 (54.7)

WR Note - I know we've lacked a young dynamic guy with the loss of Campbell, but this group did pretty darn good this year given all the musical chairs. TY has come on biggly in the 2H of the season. Pittman has flashed several times and 500+ despite the injury is more than I expected. I think Pittman will take a huge step in his sophomore year. It typically takes Xs a bit longer than Zs or slots. Pascal has again played above his assumed ceiling and does so much more than just catching. Great blocking, routes, and hands. Harris is intriguing, and should see a bigger role next year after he matures in route running. Dulin is great on STs on both sides, and could mature in year 3 (he was the first FA that Ballard re-signed post season). Only big question for me, can Campbell ever stay healthy? My wish for next year aside from health from Campbell, is that we move TY to slot if resigned. Even if slowing, his perfect route running could kill it in the slot, and he'd still be a lot faster than LBs and most NBs/SSs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Offensive Line
Glowinski (100%) - 70.9 / 76.2 / 67.1 / 67.3 (60.5)
Nelson (99.4%) - 72.0 / 76.4 / 76.9 / 86.1 (91.2)
Kelly (92.5%) - 66.6 / 68.4 / 72.5 / 68.9 (73.0)
Smith (86.1%) - 60.3 / 76.2 / 81.0 / 80.1 (79.8)
IR Castonzo (68.8%) - 63.6 / 69.1 / 73.5 / 73.4 (81.3)
UFA Green (19.2%) - 54.3 / NA / 59.0 / 62.0 (NA)
IR UFA Clark (13.6%) - 68.8 / NA / 49.1 / 49.1 (NA)
Pinter (9.5%) - 62.8 / NA / 57.8 / 58.0 (rook)
UFA Veldheer (6.2%) - NA / NA / NA / 66.9 (69.2)
Holden (4.8%) - NA / NA / NA / 59.6 (NA)

OL Notes - I think it's fairly obvious we've taken a little step back. Not sure if it's scheme tweak, coaching, etc. I've ask @AWalkerColts about the potential scheme tweaks, but have missed a few mailbags lately. Regardless, a good year again by Q and Smith, and nice improvement from Glow. Little disappointed in Kelly's year, but it's not bad. AC going down hurt, and I just hope we solve for him and/or depth in the off season. I think a full offseason might help Pinter make a nice jump too. Keep in mind he's a late convert from TE, and still working on his body and technique.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Defensive Line
Buckner (72.8%) - 90.7 / 86.3 / 89.6 / 89.7 (78.8)
UFA Autry (61.1%) - 49.0 / 54.6 / 55.6 / 62.5 (71.0)
UFA Houston (58.9%) - 73.6 / 62.6 / 64.4 / 63.5 (87.1)
Stewart (56.3%) -  56.8 / 76.0 / 65.1 /  67.1 (65.8)
UFA AQM (56.1%) - 68.0 / 62.0 / 62.2 / 61.0 (66.2)
Lewis (40.2%) - 53.4 /  63.9 / 66.2 / 62.6 (46.1)
Stallworth (24.5%) - 77.6 / 63.1 / 43.6 / 44.5 (65.5)
Banogu (9.7%) - 47.7 / 40.7 / 40.7 / 42.4 (49.0)
Turay (9.2%) - NA / NA / 65.1 / 57.2 (91.3)
Waived Day (6.1%) - NA / 61.5 / NA / 56.8 (60.6)

DL Notes - Pretty happy with this unit in most areas. 3 Top 25ish guys in sacks, and IMO that's impressive given we are 30th in blitz %. Buckner is a handful. Houston despite his decreased PFF is still top 10 in pass rush win rate. Autry had pretty darn good stats after the switch back to DE and asked to move around. Stewart has been pretty consistent and reliable. The rest are all questionable. Hoping Lewis continues to improve, and Turay gets back to form. AQM is solid depth. Stallworth, and Banogu, I just don't know... A little surprised Stallworth was one of the first resigned.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Linebackers
Leonard (79.9%) - 81.6 / 81.1 / 69.7 / 72.6 (78.7)
UFA Walker (67.5%) - 55.6 / 44.6 / 48.3 / 48.0 (61.0)
Okereke (66.4%) - 40.1 / 50.9 / 40.5 / 49.6 (78.4)
Franklin (8.3%) - 51.4 / 67.7 / 70.2 / 69.3 (61.3)
Speed (0.1%) - NA / NA / 60.0 / 60.0 (69.4)

LB Notes - Like the OL, I have questions out to @AWalkerColts on scheme tweaks. Seems we're playing to my untrained eye more rip/liz or something that has impacted coverage. The drop from Oke is pretty ugly at times, and it's a little hard for me to believe the added handoff responsibilities (at least it looks like more handoffs to me) haven't had an impact to him, as well as some of the DBs. Leonard, while dropping a little, is still a stud. Walker's drop has the same feel to me as Oke's (potential scheme). I was really hoping to see Speed perhaps emerge this year a bit, but perhaps next year will be his time.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Cornerback
Moore (92.3%) - 63.5 / 60.3 / 70.1 / 74.8 (75.5)
UFA Rhodes (87.4%) - 82.0 / 78.3 / 79.2 / 76.3 (46.4)
Ya Sin (53.3%) - 58.2 / 48.4 / 40.5 / 49.9 (65.3)
UFA Carrie (38.4%) - 71.3 / 74.0 / 75.4 / 70.8 (56.2)
Rodgers (4.9%) - 61.4 / 61.4 / 64.1 / 73.9 (rook)
UFA Smith (0.7%) - 64.3 / NA / 64.3 / 64.3 (NA)

CB Notes - Wow, was Rhodes a great find by Ballard or what. Not sure if it's the change in location, reuniting with his old coach, or scheme change, but whatever it is, it worked extremely well. Moore has been a bit up and down, but he's righted the ship the 2H of the season. RYS seems to be rebounding a bit from a bad 2nd and 3Q and has about the same passer rating allowed as Moore and a lesser/better completion %. Again, scheme? If we choose to stay in this scheme, switch to S? Carrie has been terrific at NB when Moore has moved to CB2. Another great pickup by Ballard. Not sure Rodgers will ever make an impact at CB, but I love his STs play and potential. Perhaps a year or two working on his body will allow him to compete at CB or NB. Being more or less limited to NB though would be tough to overcome with Moore and Carrie playing well. Can't wait to see him returning KOs and Punts in year 2.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Safeties
Blackmon (88.8%) - 65.7 / 67.7 / 66.2 / 60.8 (rook)
Willis (81.6%) - 64.1 / 67.0 / 68.0 / 73.2 (69.5)
Wilson (21.2%) - 82.1 / 72.2 / 61.5 / 63.6 (71.9)
UFA Hooker (6.8%) - 60.6 / NA / NA / 60.6 (69.5)
UFA Odom (2.4%) - 61.3 / 53.9 / 28.9 / 36.2 (67.3)

S Notes - I'm not really sure what to think here, but I think I expected most of it. Blackmon can be fantastic at what's in front of him at times and big plays, but struggles deep in coverage. Same in college. Rough 4Q for him once teams got tape. He's leading all Colts D starters in missed tackle %, and leading all DBs in highest passer rating allowed. Ouch, need a major step forward in 2021. Willis has been great in the box allowing a low passer rating and completion %, which is where we seem to play him most if you account for his DADOT. Wilson has been solid depth. I'd really like to see Hooker come back on a team friendly deal and see what he can do in the rip/liz C3 sets. Odum, while not getting many snaps at S, has been a ST's stud.

I would say the most surprising is Kelly's grade of 68.9 is the most surprising of all the grades.

I thought he played better than a backup ?

I don't really put a lot of stock in their scale/labels. I do like the ratings though, as I think they are directionally correct.

Kelly's drop off was noticeable this year, mostly early this year. He played pretty solid the last half of the season IMO. Still think he's underperforming his #1 pay for C. Regardless, he's starter grade regardless of the scale. He's just not a top 5 C.

I think Kelly is a top 5 C.  To his credit, he has dealt with JB/Luck/JB/Rivers (with a mix of JB).  He makes very few mistakes and hasn't really (as a center) had any consistency over his career.

IDK. I just don't think a QB change is that big of deal, and those 3 QBs IMO aren't guys that will make a C's job harder. If anything, just the opposite. And Kelly playing between to good guards, one an All Pro, is a huge bonus for any center. Most folks overlook Glow, but he's been very very good. IIRC only allowed 2 sacks this year (same as Kelly). Early in the season though, Kelly was just not looking great in run blocking at all. He did look better down the stretch.

Luck was a mobile QB and played a lot under center.  Brissett is a quasi-mobile QB and plays more under center than Rivers.  Rivers is NOT a mobile QB and played a lot in shot gun with totally different run plays than either Luck or Brissett.  Throw in multiple OL coaches.

Kelly is a very good Center.  The whole OL (including Q) looked different (worse) earlier in the year.  They all came on strong later in the year.

Maybe a QB change isn't a huge deal for a C.. but maybe the way the QBs line up and the way they are used, the way the running backs play, etc. adds in..  I have full faith in Kelly and think he's well deserving of 2nd team all-pro and pro-bowler.

To me, a running QB makes it far more difficult for a C. Luck was mobile, but he was still a pocket passer. JB wasn't running all over either. We all know PR doesn't. I just think all 3 QBs style would make the OL's job easier. Only ding, is JB's high TtT. River's low TtT, makes him one of the easiest QB to block for in the league IMO.

I do think Kelly is good. I just don't see a clear and distinct difference from others. Guys like Linder, Lindsey, Roultier, Skura. and Ragnow are just on another level. That's my top 5. Lindsey, Linder, and Ragnow are clearly better IMO.

I just want to say THANK YOU for all of the data you provide on the forum - I appreciate it. I can say with certainty I wouldn't see 90% of this stuff if you didn't post it.

You're more than welcome. Like I've said before, I deep dive a lot of stuff because of my curiosity and need to feel informed. Might as well share it. Just happy if a few enjoy it like I do! I've been digging on a few things roster centric that impact team needs like FA and performance. Might pub it in a day or so once it all comes together if I have more time this week.

I appreciate the kind words MC.

I hope our safety situation improves this year, as they seemed to be a liability in pass coverage.

Willis did really well, but is very limited to a box safety roll. Gotta hope Blackmon shores his coverage issues up. I'd take Hooker back on a team friendly deal though. Hooker/Blackmon/Willis would be a nice rotation. Give RYS a shot at S too if needed.

I’m really concerned with Blackmon at FS.  He really hurt us down the stretch.

I like Ballard, but we definitely have cohesion issues with certain talent.  I think some of our guys don’t fit the scheme.  I think a lot of this has to do with Rivers limitations at QB.  There are a lot of things Rivers can’t do, so there a lot of things Frank’s can’t do that he wanted to do when they built the team.  We’ve only had one draft since Luck left.

Also I think a lot of it has to do with Mack’s absence.  He would have been a stud running the stretches and other slower developing plays that Taylor isn’t suited for.  it really is too bad we couldn’t see those two guys together.  Garnett gives me hope for Mack and Hooker but I am very doubtful.

I think we struggle with secondary guys playing out of scheme.  We need a better LB other than Leonard and we need Leonard to play at a higher level than he did this year.  We needed Hooker badly.  We got torched in the deep middle this year.  Just torched.

I want Rivers to come back and give it another shot, but that is a tough tough call for management.
