Colts/Bills 1pm Saturday Remaining 1st round schedule/Pre game Discussion thread (Merge)

Well lately it’s been the reverse problem.  Quick starts and then getting stagnant.  With that said I wouldn’t expect the Colts to suddenly become a blitzing team.  That’s just not who they are.  They will do one here or there but they don’t do a lot outside of that.  They depend on their linebackers to drop out and help in the zone on a lot of plays.  They depend on their front four to get pressure which I think will be a challenge vs the Bills but I don’t expect the Colts to change who they are in a week though.

I think the Colts take some risks with more blitzes on D & trick plays + new plays on offense. Hopefully they blitz using Kenny Moore and Darius Leonard. They are excellent blisters.

I am sure they will have a couple of blitzes.  They normally do every game and it’s normally the guys you mentioned.  Still I wouldn’t expect much beyond what they normally do.

From the limited games I've seen on him he's got a rocket arm.

I definitely expect at least one bomb to beat Carrie or RYS deep.

Have a chance if they can mix it up correctly at the appropriate times (blitz, man, zone).

Easier said than done obviously.

This has no validity. There are compounding variables here. Total attempts is not taken into account, a lot of running usually takes place in snow, or winter games. Glad I took Stats, helps me identify bad numbers like this. Numbers definitely lie when looking at thing so narrowly.

We don’t even know when those stats are from. Allen is clearly a different level of QB this year...so using stats from his first two seasons is misleading.

And he has been tearing it up recently in what I am sure has been colder weather.

Hello friends, I am a bills fan who likes to visit the forums of their opponents for the week to learn and talk about things.

I think this is going to be a fun game - the first playoff game between these two teams in NFL history!

On the surface, you guys seem to match up pretty well with what we've had problems with throughout the season - you play sound, tough defense, and run the ball well behind an excellent offensive line. The Bills' run defense through the first half of the season/10 games or so was definitely their weakness.

I don't really understand what has gotten into my team since Hail Murray. In the six games since, they've won by 10, 10, 11, 29, 29, and then 30, in that order, and have looked elite in all 3 phases. It is hard to describe to you how uncharted this territory is for me. I am 25, and started watching in 2005, and the previous best season I've ever seen was last year's 10-6 season against the cakiest cake schedule of cakiest cake QBs you've ever seen, with a wild card loss in which we scored 19 points in about 70 minutes of football. The best season before that? a 9-7 season in which our point differential was about -100, and in which we lost in the playoffs 10-3. Before that? 9-7 with Doug Marrone and Kyle Orton, missing the playoffs with a week 16 loss to a 2-12 Raiders team. That is the extent of the winning football I had witnessed from 2005 to now. So this has been otherworldly.

Naturally, I assume things will come crashing down any second, and am just praying each night that Josh doesn't contract covid or something. He's been a lot of fun to watch, to say the least.

But none of that matters, because this is the playoffs, and we are all 0-0, and one bad day from going home. You guys definitely have a shot, and probably a better one than most of you think, as your coach is impressive and will know how to find our weak points. We play a softer zone defense most of the time, and rely on exotic presnap looks to fool QBs, but that really only works for youngsters, and Rivers should have no trouble diagnosing our D. If you guys stay disciplined and take what is given on offense, you'll be able to march, eat clock, and score points. Not much has stopped our offense recently, but you have the players that have the potential to make Josh hesitant, which is usually enough to get us off the field with regularity. (Do you guys play base zone or man? He really struggled vs the zone earlier this season, torching man every time we see it. But he's figured out zone defense in recent weeks too) That being said, each of the last few times we've struggled to move the ball early (vs Pittsburgh, NE, and MIA today) we've made adjustments and ripped through teams the rest of the game, so your coaches will have to stay sharp.

I'm definitely the most worried about your MLB and Taylor. I'm also worried about our lack of rest, this will be our third game in just 13 days (two straight weeks of six days between games). Most smart bills fans are not taking the Colts lightly, and expect a tough grinding game (too soon to know about weather).

FWIW, our running game will probably play next to no factor in Saturday's game. We simply don't use it haha. Against Seattle, we went up 24-7 in the first half running just 4 times in something like our first 35 plays. In the last 3-4 games, we didn't use it at all until the game was over. It's mediocre, but Allen is something like 7-0 vs top 10 defenses (not sure if this stat was by points or yards, or if it still holds, or if it's top 10 at time of game) so they just let him throw all over the place. Our WR depth is spooky, Beasley might not play but with Diggs, healthy John Brown, rookie Gabe Davis (7 TD catches, capable of tough, contested catches), and Isaiah McKenzie (gadget guy who has a few receiving TDs and finds himself open for 2-3 clutch plays per game), Allen has had it easy all year.

Praying for a COVID-and-injury-free week for both teams, and a heckuva good game on Saturday!

Great post, good luck next week. I really have no hate for the Bills, you guys helped us get in the playoffs. Josh Allen is a great talent and your defense in cold weather especially is tough. When the playoffs start everyone is 0-0 and anything can happen, believe me I know because in 2005 I thought we were unbeatable and we lost in the Divisional Round to Pitt.

the Colts blew out the Lions, Raiders, and Titans on the road by NFL standards.  They also blew out the Jets at home.  My point is you can’t say just because they played a close game vs one team one week that they won’t win by a lot the following week.  That kind of thing happens all the time in the NFL.  Again I am not saying they will or I expect that they will.  I am just saying just because they didn’t blow out the Jags doesn’t mean they can’t blow someone else out.

Fair points....   I worded my statement poorly.

I’ll give you the Detroit and Vegas games.   The win at Tennessee was very impressive, but I’d stop short at calling that game a blow out.    And it didn’t stay with me because the Titans beat us even worse at our house two weeks later.

So while we can beat the lesser teams comfortably, I don’t see that happening in the post season.   Is it possible?   Yes.   But is it likely?   I don’t think so.

Perhaps that a better way to out it?

josh Allen is very good. He is what we would hope that Eason can become! He has excellent receivers. The Bills are a solid team.  They blew away  the Dolphins defense. This is a tough match up.  our offense has to be productive and not make mistakes. We have to score TD's when in the red zone. The defense will need to get some turnovers to win.

The good thing is there is zero pressure on the colts .  People expect them to lose the bills on the other hand are people’s super bowl pick .    Josh Allen is young he might struggle early on because of pressure.

It reminds me of 2 years ago against the Chiefs. It was the first playoff game for Mahomes. Colts hung with them until Chiefs just took over the game. I think we see the same this weekend

It’s hard to say.

As Colts fans...this might be all gravy...because we aren’t expecting a SB run...but the team definitely has that expectation. And this is also a team led by a 39 year-old QB who might retire. There is going to be pressure.

Allen, on the other hand, is really young and should have several more chances.

That I would agree with.

I think to have any hope of winning the defense is going to have to put some heat on Allen.  Otherwise he has the receivers to pick our secondary apart.

Yep. My fear is the Bills going up by 14 and Frank throws the "run the ball against the weakness of Bills, which is run D more than pass D" plan out of the window.

Yes we got to play him like we played Mahomes last season. You have to have some good blitz designs that also keep him contained to the pocket. This dude can scramble and throw well on run. We have to hit him early and often and make him feel trapped.

And we gotta do it for 2 halves, not just one.

Yeah Frank is going to have to bring a fresh game plan. I hate to not utilize JT as much but we might need a good spread game with some screens and TE routes to spread their D out to be able to run effectively. This may be more of a Hines game then Taylor game. Or maybe run some split back where they dont now if we are running or passing.

got lucky... off work saturday at 1. ill set it to DVR and won't have to sweat missing anything get home get settled and start it up and get to skip time in between plays and first couple set of commercials

but... bad side... Colts might be first team out of playoffs

but at least they found a way to get in thanks to the Bills... winning lol... remember when the colts pulled starters vs jets while 14-0 and that worked out and they ended up facing the jets again in the AFCCG (attended this game)

I was there as well.  Never saw such a downcast bunch of fans leaving a stadium.  I still hate Caldwell...

Anyone know if Frank was asked why Rivers was on the sidelines for several downs that JB is typically not used for? If yes, what did he say?

They wouldn't dare...

Your hate is aimed at the wrong person. It was Polian who made that call.

The timeout that allowed the Jets to compose themselves get in position for the game winning field goal?  I don't think so.

Or are you speaking of the call to rest players and not go for unbeaten season in another game?

Sorry if i am confused.  :^)

I saw him say something about hoping to get into a situation to go for it on fourth down but they didn’t get enough on third down.  They got way too cute there.  Frank out thinks himself at times.  Sometimes it really as simple as just giving the ball to your monster back until they stop him.

The team wouldn't have even been in that position had the starters played in that game.

Every head coach in the league makes mistakes when hindsight is used to judge.

Heheh...speaking of the playoff game against the Jets.

The Colts and the Jets have a long history with each other.

Played against each other in a super bowl and also played in the same division together.

Here recently Ballard has fleeced the Jets on a trade or two. :D

They had like 13-15 former Colts players on training camp roster this year

I guess I dont understand why everyone is acting like the Bills are unstoppable and the Colts are terrible. I get that Josh Allen is great this year but (as we should all know) teams are more than just QBs.

Colts have 5 loses: Jags (season over), Titans (playoffs), Browns (playoffs), Steelers (playoffs) and Ravens (playoffs). Even if you think the Colts suck they've only lost to good teams (minus Jags week 1). Heck 6 of the teams left in the league the Colts either beat or hung with.

The Bills have played vs 3 top 10 offenses this year and they lost to 2 of them (Titans & Chiefs). The Colts are #9.

Also worth noting the Colts have beaten 3 top 10 offenses (Packers #1, Titans #4 and Raiders #10).

The Colts defense is also ranked higher.

I just dont see the Bills rolling the Colts.

Also, the Colts have won 3 games vs QB's rated higher than Allen (Rodgers, Watson x2)

One other advantage you could say the Colts have is they have already won their first playoff game - the jags game was a win or season end, the bills were under no such pressure in their last tie.

we’ve already got that mentality - may come in handy?
