I feel like a 1 year deal tops. Eventually Ballard is gonna strike gold in the draft or at least I hope. Its the one position he's struggling with.

Personally, I'd go 2 if it was team friendly.

Yup, agree on the position he's most struggling with.  Lot of capital used over 4 years not to have a starter. Right now, looks like we have two situational specialist or depth guys.

Banogu - 2R, has looked horrible. Probably got too cute with the LB stuff. Too early to write off, but trending bad.

Turay - 2R, has looked best as a rusher, even though was known more for run D in the draft. Needs to stay healthy.

Lewis - 2R, and is a tweener. More productive this year, but not likely ever a 3 down starter kind of DE.

Basham - 3R, waived by Indy year 2. Starting for NYJ. Not great, but cut too soon?

The only thing I’d add is that I don’t think Lewis was ever drafted to be a pass rusher like Houston is.  He’s more a run stopper.  I think they were hoping he could fill the role that Shread played and now Autry plays.  The good news is he’s coming on even if he didn’t play well last week.  I still expect the. To let Autry walk at seasons end and have Lewis take over Autry’s role.

Autry is playing at much higher level than Sheard. Sheard was a better run stopper, but that's about it. Autry is at his best when he's playing DE, where he's had his most productive years. Moving him back outside (like 2018) was a good move. He was not near as productive last year when they had him playing DT.

While Autry is a tweener like DE/DT guy, he's closer to DE on the spectrum. Lewis is a tweener too, but he's on the other end of the spectrum (better rushing from DT) IMO. Lewis likely could not fill the role that Autry is playing this year. He was more productive rushing inside at OSU too.

Autry in his 3 years with Colts

2018 at DE (12 games/11 starts) -  9 sacks / 13 TFLs = 0.81 sacks/start & 1.21 TFL/start

2019 at DT (14 games/14 starts) - 3.5 sacks / 4 TFLs = 0.25 sacks/start & 0.29 TFL/start

2020 at DE (9 games / 8 starts) - 6 sacks / 7 TFLs = 0.75 sacks/start & 0.88 TFL/start

Meanwhile, Lewis has only registered sacks against two teams, with very bad OLs.

I'd add that Autry's production this year is even more impressive because we've now got Buckner eating too.

In short, letting him walk would be silly. He won't be expensive.

I am not attempt to compare Autry’s play to Sheard.  Just using them as examples of primarily run stopping ends which is what I think Lewis was seen as when the idea of him playing end comes up.  Just that he’s a different type of end from Houston is all.

I am also not saying they should let Autry walk.  I am just saying the presence of Lewis makes it a possibility is all.

With five games to go Autry could easily wind up with double digit sacks.  I can't forsee Ballard letting him walk.

Yup. Jax and Houston give up sacks (both top 10 in sacks allowed), so he could get 4 more with a little luck in those 3 games.

LVR and Pitt don't give up many.

I noticed that Autry is FA too in 21' so if Ballard loses both that becomes easily one of the Colts biggest needs.

Given that Oakland didn't know what they had with Autry and Ballard did and signed him to a team friendly FA contract,  I'm confident that Ballard knows this.

Ballard won't **lose** anyone.   He will determine the value he is willing to pay.   He'll either re-sign the players to a deal he's comfortable with,  or he will let them walk.    That's what he's done every time.   He has a plan and pretty much sticks to it.

I'm with you.   100%.

Ballard is very, very price sensitive.     I tend to be as well.

But you have to have a backup plan.    So, if he lets one or both of them walk,  who is he bringing in?

And, we likely won't know until the moment the team announces the signing.    Damn, but the Colts are really good at not leaking.    We are TIGHT with info!

Colts should let Justin Houston walk next year. His numbers have been declining and I am concerned why since he has been playing next to Buckner this whole year.

The only issue really is who will replace him which might be the ultimate reason he is brought back for a year as a stop gap.

What are your thoughts?

Guy got a safety today. He might be getting on in years but if he signs for less than his current I'm all for it.

Yea, this thread didn't age very well lol...

But hey @danlhart87, perhaps Houston read your post and took it personally. Perhaps you should do the same type of thread for Oke who has been down, or Autry who didn't have a sack today.

It really wasn't a positive thread though :goodluck:

Enh happens to us all.  We’ve all said something that makes us look foolish in retrospect.  Being man enough to admit it like @danlhart87 did or just moving on like most do is good enough.  It’s when people keep doubling down on wrong opinions because they can’t admit they got something wrong is when people start looking dumb which is ironic because most of the time when they double down on wrong opinions it’s because they want to be right so they can say look at how smart I am.

My post here wasn’t an attempt to show up Danlhart as I like him I just thought it was cool information (how often do we get to talk about all time safety records) and this seemed like the best thread for it.

I like Dan too, but did enjoy the positive joke. I'm serious though. I think he should post a negative thread (since he's Mr. Positive) on one player per week, and see if that player does better like Houston did. :D

Better yet can he bash the hand off to Hines out of the gun into the middle of the line?

The week of the Steelers game we need this post:

”Rivers is washed and will never have a 5 TD game with the Colts.  We should move on from him after this season”

I think this thread was started based on some misinformation.

In 2019  Houston had

44 tackles, 11 sacks, 13 TFL  18 QB hits and 1 safety

In 12 games he has

16 tackles 7.5 sacks 7 TFL 11 QB hits 2 safeties

His tackle numbers are down but the rest are in line with the previous year and he has been playing roughly 53% of the snaps, similar to last year.

Whether or not the Colts sign him to a new a contract next year, I don't know.  But his play has not drastically dropped off, the Colts just have more guys along the line to make plays.

Although this doesn't apply strictly to the DE position, I am really interested to see what happens with the cap dropping next year.  The Colts are in pretty good shape but there are many teams that are going to have serious cap issues on their hands.

What are the chances we pick up a couple of quality guys that other teams have to let go?

Yup. I think the biggest factor is he's having to share, more than ever, at the dinner table. Adding Buchner made it pretty obvious that he'd have competition for sacks, etc.. And moving Autry back to DE was also taking a lot of food off his plate.

He's still #1 on the team in pass rush win rate (as of a few weeks ago). Haven't looked this week (not sure if those numbers are out), but going to guess he might even pop back on the top 10 list (in the NFL) too (he fell out of the top 10 last week).
