I watched his interview with Pat McAfee and he said he was aiming to get height on the kick and rubbed the ground at the same time he made contact with the ball. 

He was kicking 60+ yard field goals in high school when he was 16 years old.

The fact that he was able to get the 50 yard attempt that far & close enough to hit the crossbar after skimming the ground with his foot does not give me any concerns about his leg strength or accuracy.

I sometimes do that in trying to hit a 7 iron 150 yards to the green.

 

The iron hits the ground before making contact and my shot is short

I like Rod a lot, but he needs to do some squats and build some leg muscle lol. Most accurate kicker not named Justin Tucker, but a 50 yarder hitting the crosspost is no bueno.
