Hmmmmmmmmm. Do you mean over paying according to the league trends, or to your idea of over paid?

I really beleive in the Patriots model. I believe u put a price tag on a player and dont deviate from that plan.  If u believe u r unable to come to an agreement before his final contract year, you trade him.

Your past comments do not say that. Heck, you started whining about the Leonard's and Nelson's contracts three years before they were due.

Didnt realize I was whining. I am just not sold on paying a guard huge money. Leonard is better than I thought, however I have always believed in putting the money into the front 4. You build a strong front 4 and lbs eill look much better than they are.

You don't know who is going to paid what but yet you worry about it two or three years in advance?

You don't seem to understand these players are getting paid and getting paid market value.

Agree or not, that's reality.

If you look at the big picture you will see that for every player you think is over paid, there are at least one or two players on the roster who are over playing their contracts. Some by a lot. Thus they will become those players getting paid. It is designed like that. A non stop of revolving players.

A business owned by rich dudes. Fans owned by fandom.

Here’s the thing free agency forces you to over pay players.  That’s why players fought for it for so long and owners fought against it for so long.  Players know if you won’t pay them what the market says they are worth someone else will and if they are a really good player they know teams will pay over market value to them.  People don’t have to like it but they do need to accept the reality of the situation.

Tbh I forgot we drafted the guy! I was like who's this Grover dude?

How could you forget?  I'm pretty sure he was the pick that Mike Mayock lost it on when the orangutan pushed the button to "make the pick."  It broke Mayock that day, haha.

Say what you want, but Ballard has a done an excellent job building this defense.

a lot of the talent we have on defense is young and HOMEGROWN!  And Grover is another stud pick by Ballard.

we have a nice 1-2 punch with Grover and Buckner.  Pay that man please.

When Ballard drafted him, he was very upfront in saying it may take him a few years to develop and wanted to trust our coaches to develop him.

https://www.colts.com/news/top-10-quotes-colts-wrap-up-2017-nfl-draft-18809884

"Grover (Stewart) is a big man with strength, good initial quickness and he can run. He's got a unique trait.... something unique and now we turn it over to our coaches and let them bring their talent to light." — Ballard, on the risk/reward of taking chances on players in the final day of the draft.

For sure Buckner is helping him.. but he isn't much different (IMO) and from Ballard's quote above from Tyquan Lewis or many of Ballard's other picks.  Most of them are learning and improving.  Keep in mind, Ballard had a whole entire team to revamp and was under the assumption he had a once-in-a-lifetime QB in Luck to work with.  We are in the driver's seat of the AFC South.

It's nice to see dividends paying whereas others have failed like Q Wilson, and T.? Green <safety>.

Yes.  What is bizarre to me is that Wilson seemed to really do much better with Mike Mitchell around to mentor him.  It seemed like he had some maturity/mental issues moreso than issues with his physical skills and needed a 'big brother' in the room to help guide him.

TJ Green was drafted by Grigson.  He's still in the league (on the Falcons practice squad).  He was definitely a project pick who only had minimal experience as a DB after mainly being a WR for most of his previous football life.  In his case, I think his athletic skills were definitely there but I don't know about the football IQ.

Overall, Ballard has a very solid draft record.  The vast majority of the guys who Ballard drafted are still in the league somewhere, even if not on the Colts (Q. Wilson is on the NYG active roster).  He said it before last year's draft - you know you have a good team when you see 10+ guys who you had to cut to get to 53 get signed on other teams.  Obviously this offseason was weird with no teams being able to see guys in pre-season games, etc. (probably good for us as it allowed us to retain DeMichael Harris, Marcus Johnson, Fountain who we've utilized on the 53 man squad.  I also have some hope guys like Carter O'Donnell, Rob Windsor, Farrod Green, Ron'Dell Carter, etc. can contribute to the 53 in coming years.  Anyway, even though several guys Ballard has drafted didn't make the Colts, 100% of his draft picks from 2017-2020 are still around in the NFL on active rosters (Hairston, Q. Wilson, Basham, Banner, Jackson Barton, Cain-well he bounces back and forth in Pitt), or practice squads throughout the league (G. Green, J. Patterson) or on our practice squad (Windsor, Fountain).  I am not sure, but I highly doubt that any other GM in the league has a 100% NFL retainment on players drafted between 2017-2020 (that is remarkable to have 100% of players from the past 4 drafts in the NFL either on active rosters or practice squads).  Anyway, I think several guys who were drafted as projects are going to contribute for us more than they already are, eventually -- EJ Speed I can see taking over for A. Walker if Walker asks too much in FA this offseason,  I can see Pinter replacing Glowinski, still haven't entirely given up on Banogu, etc...

For every player some think are over paid there are two or three players who are under paid, sometimes by substantial amounts.

The NFL is no different than any other business. There is greed all over the place.

You're joking right? Grover isn't going anywhere lol. Wow I'm surprised you just said that. And nah we don't have that many people to sign,

Houston

Hilton

Autry

Glow

Some of the big ones, and we have hella cap space. Nelson's option is coming up, and then we will have to resign Leonard. I still wouldn't say we are pinching pennies quite yet.

90 will be a staple on this line for the next 3 years.

I believe Kelly, Smith, Leonard are due for extensions.  Decisions will need to be made on MAC, Burton, Wilkins, Walker and Rhodes. Lewis and Turray will be coming into contract years and not sure if they want to lock one up to a favorable deal. Almost half this team had contracts coming up.  Not sure if Stewart will be resigned or not but I get what Myles was saying.  It’s a good and bad position to be in.

Kelly already signed 4yrs 50,000,000 mill. He won't be a free agent until 2025. Keeping Leonard and Nelson will be the main priority's.

Yeah he signed in early September so we have him locked down. I would love to keep Houston another year as well but not sure we will? Since Mack got injured, we may be able to even bring him back for cheap.

Houston is a great veteran player.  I also believe Autry is going to be a free agent.  I would understand resigning Mack if it’s a cheap deal but the injuries have to be a major concern.  How do running backs bounce back from a torn Achilles?  Not sure if he will ever be the same player.  Unfortunately for Mack I think they should move on.

Normally after an Achilles it isn't good but I hate to see Mack go out like that. It would have to be cheap that is for sure. How about TY Hilton's contract, he is another one? He is a free agent after this season.

No way we don't keep Smith, Nelson, and Leonard. I still think that leaves us with cap space. After Phillip leaves this year we don't really have a QB salary on the books either..

I thought I saw something where Hilton said he wants to finish his career in Indy and was willing to take a discount  If that is so I would look into an incentive based deal where they can get out from every off season.  He still is drawing safeties his way so other teams still think he can play.

If the Colts make the playoffs I think they will resign Rivers if he wants to keep playing.  Will probably turn into a one year too long situation which is aggravating.  Only chance to move on is if somehow Eason develops into be a starter(doubtful), a QB falls into their lap in the draft or via trade or the Colts collapse down the stretch.

I don't think Rivers is back next year.

I looked around the net a couple of months or so ago, and there aren't a whole lot of successful ecamples of RBs returning from this injury.  Like there has been no one who has been equal or better post op, and the drop off is significant.  Decent NFL backs like Andre Brown and Edgar Bennet bascially washed out of the league a year or so after attempting a comeback from it.

This graph is not encouraging for hopes for Mack to bounce back at all.  It is from 1997-2002 though.  There apparantly are not a lot of test cases of RBs going down with this injury. He had so much glide and smooth lateral movement.  He most likely will never be good again.

Vick Ballard never played another NFL game after his achilles

Thank you for that. I was thinking he was probably done.  I don’t think the Colts should resign him but maybe Ballard will feel loyal to his guy and give him a couple million to be a backup for a year or two.  They got a lot of production out of him for super cheap.  Them not extending him probably points to him not coming back.  Really sad when a players career ends bc of injury but it’s a reality of the sport.

That kinda depends on multiple things

. Colts playing well rest of year

. Rivers actually wanting to come back

I don't think there is any scenario where Rivers is the QB next season.

We definitely have a few big guys to sign, but we're far from a cap crunch per say. There won't be any issue paying Nelson, Smith and Leonard. I would imagine they probably keep Houston. Walker is 50/50, depending on how much he's looking for. I'd say Autry probably chases the money in free agency, which hurts, but isn't the worst thing as it gives Turay, Lewis and Banogu (if he's still around), more playing time.

We're already top 10 in iDL spending due to Buchner, and our 3 DEs getting the most snaps this year are all FAs. We'll have to do something at DE. Banogu has shown nothing. Wouldn't be shocked if he were cut next year. Turay is still a wildcard and has only been a rush specialist thus far, and is coming back from injury. Lewis is a tweener.

It's also not really a given that we won't have any issues paying Nelson, Smith, and Leonard. We're top 2 in OL spending now. Q will set the market for LG. He'll get LT money. We also have to replace AC in the next two years. Smith will get top 10 money. That's your top 3 OL all getting big dollars (or being replaced) when you're already top 2 in spending.

I don't think it's a given he'll be back. NTs are devalued in the league. We're paying a load for Buchner already, and our top 3 DEs in snaps are FAs. If Stewart plays hardball, I can see Ballard walking. Hope it works out.
