I guess I should have spelled it out a bit better but I assumed that everyone was tracking, the military, despite the other unconfirmable status of masks and their effectiveness, still requires masks to enter all buildings and is actively taking other measures.

im not arguing against masks, I’m just saying that no one knows their effectiveness and that’s been debated by medical experts on both sides of this coin.

I'm not arguing either.  We’re all friends here.

But iwould argue (debate?). That there is evidence masks work.  They do.  Even 1 layer. Evenif they decrease risk by 10% (its much higher tho) it is worth the nuisance factor.  Masks are the single most effective measure we can take to protect us and others.  Besides avoiding people altogether of course.

Many studies worldwide have proved this fact.

The general consensus is that if at least 80% of “us” wear them, the virus will at least be held in check and we CAN get back to work, school,  . Etc in a much safer manner.  Its just too bad we werent advised fromthe start of their effectiveness.  If that would have happened, there would have beenFAR less deaths, and work and school risks would be negligible.  Additionally, FAR less unemployment and the economy would be much more robust.

This thing has beenbungled from the start.
And we all know why.  Unless of course we fail to accept facts and basic science.  There really is no debate on that. Facts are facts.

my mom is 91 so i have done extensive research and talked to countless medical professionals about this.  Thankfully, shes in good health and lives at home, but she’s the single most important “thing” i can’t afford to lose.  So obviously i’m being very cautious.

Not to mention i’m trying to protect my fellow man,  i feel its my obligation as an American.

This is true.

all I know is, whatever they gave the President for treatment Friday must have worked, just heard he’s out of the hospital and driving in his motorcade. Maybe we’re on the cusp of a treatment/vaccine finally

I don't think this is true at all. People say over and over and over that masks reduce the likelihood, particularly of spreading to others, not eliminate it. Think you're mostly wrong here.

Nope. Spend some time on Twitter or Facebook and you'll find that a good number of people believe the mask will fully protect them.

To be truthful, from the very start there was a shortage of N95 and surgical masks. US companies offshored PPE production overseas, mostly to China and Covid choked off the supply chain. And every item in the US was needed by healthcare workers that were in very close quarters to Covid patients. There were also concerns if non medical people wore masks, they would get contaminated hands then fiddle with their mask and touch their face and get infected that way.

For example-

https://www.wired.com/story/decades-offshoring-led-mask-shortage-pandemic/

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/13/business/masks-china-coronavirus.html

And since we never had a pandemic in about a century, there were no studies on how effective they actually were (even homemade cloth ones) for filtering droplets and even catching some aerosols of a respiratory virus; which was all completed by many institutions over these last couple of months.

But you do seem to be arguing against science. Why is the effectiveness of masks unconfirmable? You can talk about medical experts on both sides of the coin, but there's a growing collection of evidence by credible experts on one side of that coin that is lacking on the other side.

Dr Scott Atlas is on the President’s Advisory. He is on Stanford University Medical Dept, Head of Radiology there, and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institute.  He released a study that points out that- fitted N95 masks (that very few people wear) protect approx. 70%.  His study points out that fitted Surgical Masks protect approx 50 plus %.  But that ill fitting cloth masks that almost everyone wears protect LESS than 2%.  He suggests that the only way to get the virus is to be in close proximity with An infected person Inside for at least 15 minutes.  He says that cloth mask-wearing is a waste, and that no one needs one outside because Sunlight is a disinfectant. He points out that the elderly and those with other previous medical conditions should self quarantine, but the disease doesn’t seem to kill the healthy, or people under aged 70 As a rule.  Yes, some do, but rarely without other factors.

Police and active military have to remain clean-shaven for gas masks to seal tightly enough to work.  Compare that to someone in a piece of cloth, dangling under their chin if no one is watching.

I’m not Pooh- pooping the disease. But I get the impression that the most vocal on this forum are either doctors in hospitals, or work from home guys.  Most seem to be far from Central Indiana.  Indiana’s jobs are 85% ones that can NOT be done at home. None are in sterile environments, except hospitals.  Almost nothing actually shut down here- Life moved on, and everyone simply had to take their chances. I see people wearing cloth masks dangling under their chin, or from their ear.  In most of Central Indiana (except Marion Co), I’m guessing that people’s number one fear is from not being allowed to work. Number two fear is not being able to provide for their family.  Number three fear is what to sell or let go if they have no income.  The fear of actually catching the virus to most workers in Central Indiana is more like 137th on a scale of Top ten.

I wear one when I enter a store to keep people happy. There is no need for me to have one on at work- I drive a truck, 3200 (650 miles a day) miles a week. I wear the mask to go buy coffee or go to the public bathrooms (the one place I truly fear, because who knows what germs others brought in). I scrub furiously afterward. Then I return to the truck, and immediately begin using disinfectant wipes on door handles, steering wheel, gear shift, turn signals, my Yeti, my phone, my electronic logging tablet- anything I might have touched since I went inside.  That’s all anyone can do.  No one Wants this virus. But on my route (Indpls up to the Michigan Border, then Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, then to El Paso on the Mexican border, and then reverse to Indpls) there is little slow down from Business or Living. The Rural Heartland appears safe, and almost normal.  Most of the virus and the fear seems to be in Urban Areas, and on Social Media.  Stay clean and avoid crowds and there seems to be no problem in Rural Central Indiana.

Dr. Atlas is quite an intelligent guy, and some of the things he has said I quite agree with. Nevertheless, he is a Neuroradiologist, not an epidemiologist, virologist, nor infectious disease doctor, so I tend to listen more to the latter in matters such as this Pandemic.  Thus, when his views on masks are contrary to, say the findings of an infectious disease specialist like Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, Dr.Monica Ghandi, I gravitate toward her findings and others of her ilk.

iam aware of the mask shortage , specifically n95.  Nothing really has changed.  I’mtalking ANY sort of mask.... anything.  Like the state we are still in really. We were crankin out planes and battle shipsinthe 40s, but we cant make enuff n95 masks in 6 or 7 months?  Ridiculous. But thats another issue.

Theres plenty of research and  examples fromthe asiancountries . They've been wearing masks for decades.

The touching your face/mask argument is weak.  Its been proven theres a much higher risk from airborne than  from picking up from touch.  That was an excuse to cover for not having masks.  Very weak argument.

I was saying it was OBVIOUSLY airborne backinFebruary.  Months before anyone was saying it and when-the focus was more on touch.  Its a virus.  Duh, of course its airborne. Thats why I hated grocery stores.... ventilation throws it all over the space.   Once again, just common sense.

We were caught with our pants down, and the dice were rolled that we’d be ok because of ignoring basic science, incompetence , ignorance, and finger pointing. Problem is, nobody knew just how contagious and deadly this could be.  No plan, and no urgency.
I put my 91 yr old mom under “house arrest” back-in February.        I saw this coming. I started wearing a homemade multi-layer cloth mask and gloves IN FEBRUARY.  I saw this coming,  tho its far worse than i even expected.I’m no medical expert.  You dont have to be to understand the basics of virus transmission, pandemic or not.

note:  this isnt directed AT you, its my frustration that this (severity of deaths, unemployment, schools, and hit to economy ) could have been Much, much milder had educated, competent adults taken it seriously and had a plan instead of downplaying and hoping for a miracle.

its absolutely ridiculous that i STILL go to stores and people are not wearing masks in public.

Its criminal, imo.

Another expert because they heard something.

Just go back and read the 1st line you typed.  That, in itself, says it all.

Science and facts are just  that.  Masks help. And your numbers are off.  Maybe not onPennsylvania Ave, but definitely in the  medical field.

The spread of Beliefs and views, like in this post , ate part of the reason we’re here.  Once again, masks help.  Period.

Sorry, but you need to change the channel bud.  You’re playing russioanroulette.  This thing catches up with those who dont take it seriously.  Urban-or rural.  Its  no coincidence that those that have been crying hoax are getting the virus. The most protected man inthe world just got it for heavens sake. Why? Airborne transmission and no masks.

Hey, you can drive around drunk too.  You may get home alive this time.  But eventually you will probably kill yourself, or worse, an innocent bystander.

I care about you and your loved ones.  Wear a mask. Just do it.

Ok, my rant is over.  I mean no disrespect.  I know people who have gone thru it, some who lost family members, and some who have died., a mask wont guarantee you wont get it, but your chances drop dramatically.
