Meow :cat:

: haha: :kitty: Cat lovers unite!!!

Alright that's just my internet tough guy talk....I don't hate cats that much. I like the kind of cats that come up to me and are sociable. The ones that hide all the time and only come out to eat, and then when you reach out your hand to them they hiss at you, those are the ones that suck. It's probably about 50/50.

But dogs are a million times cooler.

I have two cats, one of each of your description... so I guess 50/50 is pretty accurate. For the record, my cat Peyton is the friendly one.. :cat: :kitty:

My grandma's cat is basically both personalities mixed into one. He comes out to see me everytime I go over there, but when my dad goes there, he hides under the bed in the furthest room until he leaves. haha

Obviously a cat named Peyton would be cool. Is the lame one named Tom Brady? ;)

BTW I don't mean to insult your cats, I'm sure you love them dearly.

No, : haha: nothing and no-one named Brady in this household.... The other is "Blackie" real original, I know. Husband named him, he also names his guitars. I named Peyton. and no, I was NOT insulted. no harm done, you're either a cat person, or a dog person. I happen to like both. Also, my best friend raises :goat: just had babies... sooooo stinkin' cute, and I mean "stinkin' literally haha

That Tom Brady line was bleeping priceless The Peytonator!!! You should write the script for Peyton's next Mastercard TV commercial.

For the record, the world is divided between those who have kids, those who don't have kids, & those who have pets. And stay away from anybody that is overly affectionate with pet birds or snakes IMO.

The constant threat of dying to an allergic reaction is not as fun as it sounds, surprisingly. there is not much fun to breathing or being around a cat and having your eyes water, sneezing, and having your nose turn into a fountain. You will never know the true horror of having a cat pur while it rubes up against you and all you are thinking is do not touch the evil thing no matter how cute it is!

The overreaction of people to some allergies like cats is funny. Your story just makes me laugh. I just take some allergy medicine and I am fine. Not once did I ask our person who was showing the house we bought if they had a cat.

The funny thing is when it comes to dogs I am completely fine.

Sorry for sounding so callous. I probably should have mentioned that my wife has pretty bad asthma, and that I've complained to my doc enough about certain symptoms that he had me on Singulair for years (stopped recently - doesn't seem to make a difference one way or another) and has me keep an inhaler on hand in case it progresses to wheezing (technically it never has).

As I'm writing this there is a cat sitting on my desk enthusiastically trying to tell me that it's time for dinner by rubbing and licking. If I was to let her get to my mouth/nose it make me feel pretty uncomfortable, with some allergy symptoms (not as bad as yours), plus the sensation of being a little short of breath. So I just turn my head and offer her an ear instead, and pet her when I can. Sometimes at night I sleep with an arm in front of my face to ward off a cat who wants to get a little too close. I'm certainly familiar with fear of sudden death - asthma terrifies me and the inhaler is never too far away. I sometimes feel like I can't take breathes as deeply as I normally do - but fortunately I'm rarely subject to the an overwhelming reaction like you describe. (Dogs don't have the same effect on me either).

What I'm reacting to is the demonizing - though you're probably half kidding, I hear similar things occasionally from those who aren't - of things that happen to cause your symptoms. It certainly isn't their fault. I don't hate the little old lady at the super-market just because the cloud of perfume that she subjected me has me feeling suffocated and bordering on panic. I DO hate ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, and other things that are attempting to consume me, but the cat is just trying to make friends. It's just unfortunate that you can't. The stupid woman that I was making fun of is the extreme example of that. In protecting her child, he was being taught that animals are "the enemy". What a way to live. I've read enough to know that there are smarter ways to approach it.

I guess I'm "the cat defender" here. I have to point out that the one's that hide do so because they are feeling threatened. When I come across cats like that I don't hold it against them, I just become determined to befriend them. I've been known to torture people I'm visiting by spending half my time on the floor trying to make friends with their cat (or dog - they can be shy too) instead of acting like a civilized guest.

Related to larger issue - people talk about "feral cats" as being different than house cats. As in "I had to put it to sleep because it was feral". That's complete nonsense. ANY cat can become a terrific pet, it's just a matter of how much time and effort you are willing to put into it, and how long you are willing to put up with them being anti-social. I've taken in some wild ones. They all eventually come to recognize who it is that's providing for them, and start to communicate / express affection in one way or another. Now if a cat like that - who is barely comfortable dealing with their "owner", suddenly has their turf invaded by a "stranger", they are going to immediately revert to form. They're just scared, not mean.

If they are too young when they are taken from their mother, they are more likely to have an attitude. If they are too old before they start getting regular human contact, they will absolutely have an attitude. In any given litter - even if all are treated the same way - you will usually find one "ambassador" who overtly seeks human affection while his litter-mates cower in the background. But they all come around eventually if you try hard enough. I've never met a cat that I didn't like.

I have a persian cat who just turned 19 and a half a few days ago. Very proud of her. She is quite beautiful and mobile for an elderly cat. probably looks quite a few years younger and acts it sometimes. If only when we are all that old we can look that good and have people going crazy over us.........

MAC have you ever had your doc take the blood test to see your levels of Antibodies to cat dander?

I never asked, and he's never sent me to a specialist for that. He never hesitates to do so if there is a problem (ie: my wife see's a specialist for her asthma), so who knows. I also have GERD which causes chest tightness, etc in it's own right so it's hard to tell which is which sometimes (and of course he sent me to a specialist for the GERD). I just let him know my symptoms, and see what he says. He says "it's possible that I have a touch of asthma". He's never mentioned allergies - and he knows that we have cats. In fact we've had running jokes for years because HE reacts to them, and so he pretends to hate them (using the word "evil" just like others in this thread). He's said that we'd be better off without them, but he's never suggested allergy tests.

Sorry guys. Cats are the disciples of the devil. My wife is longing for one. She will be 20 foot tall before she gets her wish.

Back on the funny story angle, many years ago I was cleaning out my 3 year old daughters goldfish tank and Beelzebub wispered in my ear. I carved a thin fish like replica out of carrot, and then shouted on my little girl. As she wandered through the door, I 'palmed' the carrot fish out of the tank, and shook it as I swallowed it in one big gulp. She ran off hysterical into her mums arms. Wow, the trouble that got me into.....

I recalled the story to her only a few weeks ago when we met up for a few drinks (she is now 24), and how we laughed. As the tears rolled down her face, she said 'scared for life, scared for life'.....

Not best dad in the world material, for sure....

My 23 year old calico/tabby/tux is sitting here beside me now. She defies all laws of nature and logic. :)
