Former NFL Today Host Phyllis George Passes Away...

When you see women covering football these days,  many of them (most?) will point to Phyllis George as a person who gave them inspiration.   Whether you think she was good or not,  the one thing you have to give her is....    she was the first.    The first woman to cover the NFL.    And first is never easy.

Also,  she was a former Miss America,  and her beauty hurt her as much as it helped her.   That's a fair amount of baggage to drag around.

Here's the obit:

And here's a different obit from ESPN, with comments from female sports reporters:

These days when you write an obit, it's important when you can to say if the person died of Covid.    Phyllis George did not.   She died of some rare blood disorder at age 70.

Let's be honest, her beauty helped her more.

For sure.  And let's be honest it was her fame, title, notoriety and wholesome beauty that helped her get that job back then.  That's what it to took to break a barrier.

Yep.

It's no coincidence that most of the female sideline reporters are very good looking.  They may also be good at their job, but the "eye candy" part was a major part in why they are what they are.

Agree 100%, but what she did once she got her shot was what made her a real reporter.  I always thought they gave her interviews that put her in a position to succeed.  CBS did a good job with her.  She was truly a pioneer and did well for women as NCF stated.

That's sad. I always liked her. She was part of pregame show that was enjoyable to watch(not like today). Brent Musberger, Jimmy the Greek,Phyllis and the guy at the end who I cant recall his name.
