Logic behind Hooker

Recommended Posts

Already stated I wasn't a fan of Hooker being traded, however; I think one of the big reasons behind him being shopped around could loop back to the fact we were linked to Eric Berry. Berry, if healthy, still has 2-3 good years left. Wouldn't be a bad replacement, or even an addition to, our current group at safety.

Why wouldn't you just post this in the Hooker thread already open under Colts Football?

The only way I would trade Hooker is for a quality player like Berry, nothing less. Especially if this team has aspirations of post season play, behind "Philip". lol but hay, we will see.

I guess because I felt the need to post it in the NFL free agent discussion as I intended for it to relate more to Eric Berry

The discussions we’ve had about Berry in the past were mostly about him as a backup.    Now you want to think of him as a starter?

2-3 good years left?   Say who?   Right now the entire NFL disagrees with you.  They all could have signed him by now, and nobody has?

Maybe Berry wants to start?   Maybe he wants too much money and too many years?   Dunno?   All I know is that no one has signed him yet.

Assuming there’s a season, I’d like to see Hooker stay and play.   Maybe he turns into the player we hope....

What makes you think Berry’s got 2-3 good years left in him ? Lol. I mean in his prime he was that dude. But at this point I wouldn’t expect him to come in and play anywhere near that level again.

Who knows if he is healthy maybe but the question is that is he even in football shape he hasn't played more than two games since the start of 2017 when he suffered that horrible injury.

Agreed. More like 2-3 snaps left.

I was basing that strictly off of his age, and if he is healthy. Safeties traditionally can play longer in the NFL than a lot of other positions.

I think Berry has probably had a few offers, but is a veteran, and is waiting(or was at least planning on it) until before training camp like a lot of veterans have chosen in the past.

I stated I wanted Hooker to stay. I custom ordered his jersey, am a huge OSU fan, and love the dude. This was strictly based off the fact he has been rumored to be on the trade block.

Berry was a top 5 safety, and Ballard was there with him in KC. If he could get him to just be an average safety, we could likely get him very cheap on a 2 year deal.

Idk just a thought!

Hooker's time is up next season imo as his injury history from college has followed him to the professional level.  Good thing is we had already found a replacement who decided to go back to college in FS Hamsah Nasirildeen.  The other option the Colts could target is FS Jevon Holland.  Both safeties are already being mentioned as next year's first round talent so I wouldn't think we would be interested in Berry at this point in time.

Maybe they just didn't pick up his option because they don't want to pay him that much and feel they can work out a cheaper deal

Or.....maybe they feel he's underachieved and don't want to pay him for the 5th year. Let him prove he deserves another contract with a better year, and if not, they just drafted his likely replacement.

Ballard not picking up Hooker's 5th year option is not the end of the world.

If Hooker wants a long term contract and wants more money it's up to him to earn it now.

What most of you forget is Ballard seems to always have a plan and a reason he does things. Agree with them or not most of the time Ballard has it covered in the end results.

Plus, with what, almost half of what will be the team's in-season roster on contracts that will end at the end of this season, it's not like they won't be able to match or beat any other team's offer if they really want him back next year. They're COMPLETELY in the driver's seat by doing what they did. And as a Buckeye, I like Malik.

Personally I don't see why a few would be upset with Ballard for putting Hooker in the position to earn his next contract. Evidently Ballard wasn't sure about extending him and giving him guaranteed money.

Ballard drafted to maintain competition and now's it's up to Hooker to make his bed.

I think Hooker will get every opportunity to prove himself.

    • Do u ever get there is any sense of urgency with Ballard when he speaks bout the team? I hear a lot of I think they should. He just comes across like a guy who feels that he is safe as long as Irsay is the owner. Smooth talker, I guess, and I tire of the soft ball questions from the media. Your team was like at the bottom of the league and that was against horrendous qb play.  Your 2nd round pick corner couldn't stay healthy. Your other corners are late round picks and one coming back from serious injury. I know it's a presser and he can't give it away but man, you would think his defense is just peachy. I honestly think this D needs so much work both schematically and on the talent side. I do think listening to him, he will trade back. I think that the guys that he really covets will be gone or way too expensive. The  top 3 wrs will be gone as will be Bowers. Mitchell is probably not his guy the Dends will go fast. There might be a guy at say 12 but I think he won't pill the trigger and say give  up a 2nd or 3r rounder.
    • I see most of this forum is fine with Ballard doing what Ballard's always done.   So I'll just remind everybody that he is 54-60-1 and he doesn't have the QB excuse anymore. If he thinks that playing conservative with trading back for more picks and the cap are always the way to go, then I just hope the fan base, and Irsay especially, make no excuses for how those picks work out (and how the top prospects that he didn't make moves for worked out). It's going to be incredibly easy to compare how his strategy works vs what the Texans and Jags have done in FA this year, and it'll be very easy to follow how MHJ,Nabers,Odunze and Bowers perform.
    • MJH does not have elite speed. He didn't even run a 40. Nabors has elite speed but not size. Jones would have been a combination of both of them if u picked out their elite traits. Jones was like Calvin Johnson. Just  absolute freaks of nature that shouldn't be able to do what they do at that size.
    • I think u r missing my point. Pick a player that fits and excels in your scheme. Guys like Nabers and MJH are freaks and r not scheme dependant. Think of the Rams. Kupp is good, but they dipped into the draft and amazingly draft another stud because he fits their scheme and does not have elite triats. It is similar to the way they draft corners. They r typical zone corners. U can let one-way if they want to much as u can go back into the draft and hopefully get another in the 2nd. That is my point.
