Great arm, good accuracy, poor under pressure, rumored poor work ethic. The first two can't be taught, the next two are gonna be on him to overcome. He couldn't have asked for a better system to be put into to help him with those issues so if he busts, it's gonna be all on him.

This is a great write up. I think the colts basically said the talent is there we will take a chance on the work ethic thing. Hoping Rivers can show him the way. For the colts the talent was to good to pass up. The way they handled him at the post draft presser tells me the rumors are true. It’s up to him to change the narrative. Then to make the colts trust him enough to give him the keys. This is what the debate most likely was about before they turned in the card. They basically said his upside is so big we are willing to take a chance and see if Rivers can teach him to be a pro.  Remember all the predraft talk was how bad his interviews were.

Isn’t it bizarre.  We live in a world where young men have the opportunity to make millions, be idolized and pampered, and still there are concerns about their work ethic.  Sack up, son.

It is. Maybe it’s a situation he was told how great he was his entire life. Nothing like getting humbled by not getting picked until the 4th.

I saw a video of when Georgia lost the national title game. He was waiting in the tunnel for Fromm. I think he has some leadership abilities. Just needs to have a mentor.  If he comes in and works hard Reich and Ballard are going to have to know giving him the starting job isn’t going to stop him from working. Basically Rivers is getting his 10th kid lol. He has the talent that should of been a rd 1 QB.

I will stay optimistic. At this point there is reason to think any other wise.

Everyone keeps saying Rivers and Reich has to do this and that but in reality it is Marcus Brady along with Keven Patullo who might have a bigger roll in getting him ready for the NFL.

Rivers and Reich may have a mentor roll but it will be Marcus Brady who works with him on his footwork and mechanics.

Most of all Eason is the one that needs to work hard. He needs to be in Rivers ear asking all kind of questions. Because he is a 4th rd pick I don’t think there is any guarantee they don’t go after someone they love next year. He is going to have to really impress for them to not do that.

I'll admit, I haven't watched much video of him yet.   It sounds like mobility is not there at all.  If not there as a rookie, it's not going to come.  But I liked Bernie Kosar.

I wonder if, with the newer style mobile QB's most teams have, if a true pocket passer could offer an advantage?

Unfortunately, one dimensional Quarterbacks (pocket passers) are a dying breed in the NFL. 4 mobile Quarterbacks were drafted in the first 2 rounds this year and next year there are possibly 4 coming into the league. Lawrence, Fields, Lance, and Newman.  If a QB is going to stay in the pocket nowadays he has to be aware of whats around him. Eason doesn't have to possess Lamar, Mahomes, or Watson speed to be a successful QB. There wasn't a defender near Eason and he should've got the 1st down easily with his legs.

I made a mistake in my previous post. The play I'm talking about is in the 2nd video not the 1st.

Yeah, it's up to Eason himself.

Like I said earlier, I am not gonna make any predictions but I will stay optimistic till there is something to change my mind.

I am also not going to do what some will do and that is rag on him for making a mistake his first time or two out. There will be a few who will have no patience at all.

Wait until him and Brissett make the roster and Kelly doesn’t.

I don’t think it’s a question of talent.  Outside of not being super mobile he has all the tools to be a late first second pick.  It’s a question of work ethic and what he has upstairs.  That’s why I wasn’t shocked to hear Ballard say he’s going to have beat out Kelly for the number three spot.  They aren’t going to do anything to feed into his ego, if he has one.  They are going to make him earn it and hopefully humble him along the way if his ego is truly a concern.

Just some notes

- Some throws he made just made me go wow, but then he had some head scratchers. For example, he faces pressure and he leaves his feet and floats a pass to two defenders in the red zone.

- I don't like his feet when he's pressured. He's very timid and looks to either spin or throw off his back heel.

- The range he has is insane. I honestly feel like he can throw from any angle, but I think that gets him in trouble as well especially when he doesn't get time.

- His receivers did not do him any favors as they dropped a lot of catchable balls and I'm not sure if it's because he throws a fast ball on almost every throw or not.

- I wish he would step into throws more. I just feel like he relies on his arm too much. Countless times I saw him sail passes because he didn't step into his throws.

- I think he goes to his check down too early especially if pressure is in his face and doesn't anticipate his receiver's route.

Overall, I think Eason is talented and I think if he stayed another year in school to polish his skills more, he would have went in the first round.

Any virtue taken to an extreme becomes a liability, his job is to throw it to his receivers not through his receivers.  So many drops on short drag routes thrown as if they were 20 yard in routes.  He'll have to learn how to modulate the throttle, even in the NFL.  He does have a big arm.

I am glad that we took a QB to develop, and to take a chance on.

If you think about it , this is a PERFECT place for this kid to develop

The locker room is full of team captains, and players like Rivers that work VERY hard.   It won’t be ok if he slacks off.

It’s been reported that Rock YaSin has been showing up before everyone else and stays late...... that approach is infectious .....

He won’t be the big man on campus in the Colts locker room..... he is just another guy..... the coaches are watching.... but even bigger.... the other players are watching..... if there is a me first attitude he is gone

I don’t think Jeff George got past this persona

It will be interesting to see this develop

The most glaring issue with Eason is his footwork.

If Rivers and Reich can be his mentors mentally I think Marcus Brady can help him big time with his footwork and mechanics.

Colts could very well bring in an outside specialist

Actually I am fine with that

I am not invested in Kelly, I liked the little that I saw.....  The little that I saw in the preseason APPEARED to be better than what we got from JB.

If Kelly is beaten out then he SHOULD go

It will be very interesting if both Kelly and Eason have excellent camps

That will make it a very tough choice.

I would think they at that point, would actually say to JB......  do you want to stay or go?

Think a moment from JBs perspective.......

Does he want to be the backup for one year, or does he want to go to another team where he has a chance to be the starter

I just dont see JB on the team after this contract is up...... I think he is leaving, one way or the other.... it may be a year from now, or maybe THIS year... If HE wants to go.......

I think HOW JB feels about the situation may be part of this years decision

With the saturation of the QB market I don’t think Jacoby has a chance to be a starter. Maybe he ends up staying here as a long term backup. Maybe we keep 3 QB on the roster and Brissett stays the backup to a young QB after Rivers retires. I think they have so much respect for him it’s going to be hard for them to cut ties.  My biggest concern is they keep hanging on to hope he will improve enough to be the long term starter.

The thing is, at this very moment he would not be the starter for any team. Injuries could happen later that open the door for him, but as others have stated with Cam Newton, Winston and evening Dalton out there it would seem unlikely a team would pick him over those three.

There are so many examples of him peeling out of the pocket to his left turning his back to the play in the process, instead of simply stepping up into the pocket. It shows 2 of his biggest flaws, his lack of athleticism, and his panic under pressure. It seems correctable enough with coaching and experience. There are plenty of examples of average athletes who have had success, Big Ben, 2013 Flacco, hell even Peyton Manning was awkward looking on the run.

The talk of mobile QBs is baffling to me. Mahomes has really changed a lot of minds huh? (ditto Lamar). It wasn't two  minutes ago when everyone said you had to be a pocket passer in this NFL, now this?

Just like the Chiefs and Ravens crafted their offenses around their QBs. It's up to the Colts to craft the offense around Rivers and Eason i.e. non-mobile QBs, and I think they can and will do great.

Manning and Brady mobile? No. It doesn't matter. It's an added dimension but it's not the only thing that defines a QB.

In the next pick series that came out tonight they mentioned how he could make plays outside  the pocket.  I agree everyone likes to jump on the thing that is popular at the moment.

I watched all 3 videos.  He got a LOT of pressure in his face and his receivers dropped a LOT of balls that hit their hands.  So now I'm wondering what the quality of players he was working with.  He did make some bad throws, mostly under pressure, but it doesn't appear to me he had a lot of help either.  Of course two of those 3 opponents were against ranked teams, so there's that.

I was not a fan before the draft, still don't think he'll be a stud or anything, but I'm willing to give it some time and have him work with Sirianni and Reich and see if he can be coached up.  The measurables and arm talent are there.

Yeah, he looks good to me and he'll only get better sitting behind Rivers. But Ballard said he has to make the team that should give him great motivation and yes I agree he is very talented.

I only watched the first but agree with a lot of what you posted.

First thing that jumped out was the drops.  He looked like he played with a bunch of Darrius Heyward Bey's out there.  Multiple drops without a defender within 5 yards, not to mention the drops on most of the contested throws.

At the same time the talk about him not doing well under pressure is apparent.  On one play he is under pressure he turns and escapes gets to the outside and despite ample opportunity doesn't throw the ball away even though he's outside the pocket.

He's not a great athlete but actually slightly better than I expected.

He does look to get rid of the ball quickly but as a negative a few times it looked like he didn't give the route time to develop.  There where a couple plays where he wasn't under any obvious pressure but I felt like if he held the ball a half a second longer it would have (or at least should have) been a catch for positive yards.

A couple of boneheaded throws into double coverage too.

Joel Erickson called Easons former coaches for a story.  This sure doesn’t sound like a work ethic or character issue.

I have to say I didn't hear anything about character issues until pretty late in the process.  My guess is someone said that or made it up and it just sort of took on a life of it's own.

Regardless Ballard likely has the full story on him.  His guys almost certainly talked to all his coaches and probably his teammates.  Plus they interviewed him.

Just imagine bestQBever, if his receivers actually caught the damn ball???  I'm not saying Eason is perfect but looking at film I see a bunch of drops that cost him a higher draft grade!  Were lucky GA went with Fromm and Eason ended up in Washington with no weapons whatsoever, otherwise we wouldn't have had this chance!!!  I'm on the bandwagon and most here will too before too long.

I think when camp starts it’s going to become clear he is better then Jacoby.  Hopefully he shows enough this first year Reich and Ballard will say yeah he can be the guy and won’t be looking for anyone new. He gets the bell out so quick. He is more of a athlete then given credit for too. Makes me mad we are dealing with this virus because rookie mini camp would be coming up.

I'm hoping by camp that Jacob Eason is the clear #2 qb on this team but make no mistake that even if Jacoby Brissett is here that Eason's presence will be bigger!!!  I'm very excited for what Rivers brings to the table now but I can't help but be even more excited with what Eason can bring in 2021 or 2022!!!  I know that this staff loves Brissett but at some point you have to look into your future to believe what you preach.
