Peyton structured his contract on a pay as you go basis, basically his cap hits are the same as his paragraph 5's.

This makes him the higest played player in 2012 even above Mario and Calvin (which was some insane numbers).

Is he still worth it? Irsary I hope you know what you are doing.

Maybe, just maybe, the contract restructuring, the overall money issues, the cap issues, weren't the main reasons for PM leaving the Colts.

Consider how PM might view the following possibilities:

1) The Colts are rebuilding (not revamping, or retooling) from the ground up. This will take time to build a team structured to win that is not focused on a particular QB's strengths. Many older and oft injured players will be released. New players will be obtained, and coached up to new schemes both on offense and defense.

2) The Colts will be using its #1 overall pick to draft the QB1 of the future. If this QB will not be starting right away, it is expected that PM will not ignore him, and actually mentor him, and give up a significant # reps with 1s to him to ensure his development. The Colts intend to start this QB over PM within the next few years as the rebuilt team matures and gels.

3) Given the uncertainty of PM's neck/nerve/arm issue, it may be best to consider retirement soon.

None of the above possibilities directly speak to money or cap. But they would be, IMO, the major reasons why PM would choose to part with the Colts.

This^. I dont think it was ever about the money. Peyton is at the point of his career where his window is closing on getting another SB ring. Thats not what the colts are aiming for going into next season. Both Irsay/Colts and Peyton have different goals/objectives for the next coming years. Peyton left because he is playing to win, and Irsay is trying to start from scratch with everything. Keeping Peyton only prevents him from a realistic goal at the superbowl and just drags/postpones the rebuilding process for whenver peyton would retire had he stayed with the colts.
