Saints may trade a 2021 pick for a high pick tonight

I know its straight speculation but would any of you jump on this if we get the call to move #34?

Doesn’t make much sense for me. We give 34 and it’s possible they get high 20’s or 30-32 this year. They have a solid team still. I’d have to get more than a #1 next year for an almost 1 this year. Maybe their 2 this year and their 1 next. Or #44 for their 2021 #1

I wouldn’t....

Aside from needing to round out some spots of our own THIS year... what does the next college season even look like right now?

How do we scout players who played an abbreviated season... if there even is one?

This was part of  my thought process in the thread I created with the scenario of trading our own 1st rounder for the shot at a 3rd already scouted player at the top of Round 2 tonight.

We need multiple more picks tonight, we should try the same.

I agree.... and I think it’s an option that we should consider.

Future 1st and current 3rd from Saints, I would definitely do it. We need to not lose a pick and have at least the same number of picks on Day 2 of THIS draft.

2 games with Brady led Bucs plus playing a division winner schedule against both Packers (plus entire NFC North) and 49ers plus Chiefs, I will take my chances gladly that they will be in the high 20s at best.

Plus, in the worst case scenario that we don't have a season, future picks would be more valuable, IMO.

Since they are always picking so late, I may require a 2020 4th rounder in addition to their 2021 1st round pick.

No it doesn’t make sense. Especially if it’s a second rd.

I wholeheartedly agree.... trading a “known” (a scouted and vetted prospect) for an unknown... and next year’s scouting and draft process are truly an unknown.... is a bad idea IMO.

Saints only have picks 88, 130, 169, and 203 left this year.  Pick 88 and next year's low first is not enough, IMO.

I'd ask for future 1st and 3rd plus this year's 3rd. That would be the best, short term and long term for us.

Absolutely not. New Orleans is a team going for the SB. They will almost certainly have a 2021 1st round pick between 25-32. Why would you trade this year's pick 34 for that, plus maybe a late 3rd round pick? That's a lousy return on any level. N.O. is not a good trade partner.

Just remember: the Colts made a major move out of the first round last year to get this pick and got lucky where it landed. Now they trade that for another shot in the dark? You end up chasing you tail here. You never cash in.

They want additional picks for THIS draft. That's what to expect tonight if the right offer comes along.

I’d think about it if they were adding the 3rd but still, we are just at the tail end of an almost 1st rounder now. Again, maybe for 44 or if we traded down a few with someone to collect another pick but if they were in the SB, that trade wouldn’t be very good imho.

    • Of,course it is just speculation. This forum is all speculation and opinions , and to your point nothing is ever leaked from the organization they don’t want public including the content of their pre-draft videos. It is all just spitballing in the offseason by the media and the fans.
    • If there was any flaw with the Hooker pick, it was simply his injury history. Dude was a big time playmaker, and he showed that whenever he was healthy. Sadly, that wasn't often enough, and it undermined his career potential.   There's also a common perception that FS isn't a first round position. I fully believe in positional value, but I don't agree at FS. I think it's close to a premium position when you have a playmaker. Especially when you want to play a bunch of Cover 3.
    • I don’t disagree. But if AR is going to make enough difference to win the close games, wouldn’t we want to put every tool in his bag to be the true difference for this team? What players on defense are going to be a bigger difference maker for this team over a high level pass catcher/playmaker, if AR is that guy? That argument isn’t just, well AR is better, therefore he will get us to the playoffs. If that is true, why would it not be better to load him up with playmakers that can make a difference now and over the next several years than to just keep what we have and try and find a few defensive players? We’ll address the defense at some point in the draft… I think we’ll still get a vet in the secondary room post draft. I think the corners will be better next year. Defensive line could very well also. Will our pass catchers be better? Just because AR is out there? I don’t necessarily see it that way. I think the offense will be, but I see no reason to not load him up.
    • And he was playing very well before getting injured
    • Excellent article on the Athletic   https://theathletic.com/5420476/2024/04/22/nfl-draft-nil-money-impact?source=user-shared-article   NIL money has changed the draft. This year a much smaller number of underclassmen declared for the draft. Many players who could have made the draft stronger stayed in school because they get paid in college. Also, many believe that because many underclassmen stayed in school, only about 150 to 170 are draftable (have the talent to be drafted). Some getting drafted this year would have been undrafted in earlier years.   It should be a fun draft anyway.
