Jeff Saturday on Colts Pats 2005

Recommended Posts

Very interesting inside perspective from Jeff Saturday on Colts/Pats game from 2005:

Colts mentality that game

Difficulty beating the Pats defense

Tony Dungy’s mentality

Peyton’s work ethic

Being called a “finesse” team

Edge’s running

Saturday’s assessment of that 2005 team
The subsequent 5-1 record against the Pats

that started with that game.

The plane ride home

My wife and I were at that game and rode the train from Foxboro to Boston with hundreds of very shocked and quiet Pats fans. I wanted to talk trash but discretion got the better of me.

That 05 team was the best of the Manning era, IMHO.

Marvin was still at full strength, Edgerin was still at full strength..

2005 was our most talented team.

I’ll bet Nick Harper still has nightmares! If he had headed for the sidelines with that fumble recovery, THAT would have been a great ending to that game against the Steelers and who knows, maybe Peyton would have had two rings here?

I totally agree they had an incredible team should’ve won the Super Bowl that year.  They definitely were the best team in the NFL at that time.

Didn't he get stabbed in the leg by his wife/girlfriend earlier that week?  Then our 'liquored up' kicker missed.  I still think the play before the kick they should have run Edge instead of throwing that pass.

In reality though, I don't think the coaching staff or team fully recovered from the Dungy tragedy.

You know, it's been really discussed, but that was also the year that coach dungy's eldest son committed suicide late in the season. He was close to the team, had worked as a ball boy I think. Dungy left the team for a while and a bunch of players attended the funeral. We earned a bye and then played an egg against Pittsburgh before getting a last minute chance.

Just always felt that tragedy took the starch out of the team.

However, no one, rightfully has ever really talked about it that I know of.

    • I am hoping TY finishes up this season strong.  But Rivers has to get him the ball.  It would be a shame for TY to go out so negatively.  The old dog still has a few tricks left to unleash.
    • The Titans will crush us. We don’t play well against physical teams like them.
    • Have to win Sunday to do it I think. I think they can...but I don't think it's much more than a 55/45 at this point.
    • Waiting to  see how he does in titans raiders and Steelers  games
    • Actually I said we had to win the Thursday game if we wanted a winning season.  We did that so now we're working towards better than 9-7.    The GB game is the first net + win of the season. It makes up for the Jag loss. I also said Pre-Season that we would lose against a really bad team we shouldn't and win one we didn't see coming.  That has come to pass.  I didn't expect, however, for Houston to be so bad.  That is really the only big surprise this year on our schedule.   I think we may have a trap game against them, and I will predict that will happen, especially if we win against TN Sunday.  I predicted, pre season, a sweep of the tanking Jags (which they clearly are) and a split with Hou and TN.  I predicted losses against Baltimore and GB, but they swapped Cle for GB.  (Both appear to be playoff teams, so no biggie).  I think they have a very tough game on Sunday and I think they have danger in Hou especially if they get too full of themselves.      I think Pit looks like a loss unless they have locked down their seed but with only 1 bye, that is unlikely with 2 games to go.  I said LV was a toss up that would decide if we went 9-7 or 10-6.  So in the end, we're right about where I predicted.   But it was a pretty common prediction, so not rocket science.  10-6 looks more likely than 9-7 right now.     We shall see.
