Cole Kmet would be Rivers Gronk

Kmet is good.   And he’s going to get better.

But he is not Gronk.   Not even close.

They have similar size.  Gronk was slightly faster (based on 40) and a similar overall athlete (faster in the 3 cone, slightly slower in the 20 yd shuttle).  I think Gronk was also stronger.

I think Gronk was a much better blocker coming out of college and had better hands than Kmet as well.

I don't think Kmet will be a bad NFL player, I just think comparing him to a guy who likely would have been a HOFer if not for injury cutting his career short, is a bit much to put on him for right now.

I don't really like comparing guys to stars, but Kmet and Gronk's yardage numbers were similar coming out of college. Gronk's TD numbers were higher, but he also got a ton more RZ opps. ND's O was very conservative with their QB play, which is why the OC got the boot. I think Kmet's numbers would have been much higher with Rees as OC for a full year. Really wish Kmet would have stayed in school, but it is what it is. Kid's got a high ceiling, and so does the guy from Dayton IMO.

I think both of them have high floors and pretty high ceilings, but based on speed and athletic ability are probably close to their ceilings.

I think Thaddeus Moss (LSU, Randy Moss' kid) has a very high ceiling based on his athleticism (maybe being 6'2" hurts a little, but he's very thick).  His blocking needs improvement, but he's a solid receiver who I think could be a huge threat if he's being guarded by LBers.  I also think Albert Okuegbunam (Mizzou) is a complete freak of a physical and athletic specimen.  He's by far the fastest TE in this draft, but it sounds like character/maturity concerns are his major issue.  IMO, I think Kmet and Trautman (Dayton) are probably going to be more ready to contribute day one and think based on their makeup, are probably high floor guys (low risk) with ceilings not too much higher than where they are now (moderate reward)... whereas Moss and Albert O. are low floors (high risk) but higher ceiling (high reward) guys.

I can't imagine going into pre-season with only the group of TEs we have right now.  I can see Roosevelt Nix being used similar to how Hewitt was used... but I'd really like to see us have a very dangerous receiving TE who can stretch the field (similar to what Ebron was like in 2018, or to other TEs that Reich has worked with like Gates and Ertz).

Guy is extremely underrated. He is going to be solid. Reminds me of Doyle with more speed.

probably a 4th or 5th round prospect.

This TE class is not 'loaded' by any means.. but along with Kmet, Trautman, Moss, Albert O.... there are some guys that will be available in the mid-late rounds who I think can be solid in the NFL -- Hunter Bryant (Washington - 6'2" 250, 4.7 40, huge hands)... Colby Parkinson (Stanford -- 6'7" 252, 4.8 forty), Stephen Sullivan (LSU, 6-5, 250, 4.66),  and several others listed here:  https://walterfootball.com/draft2020TE.php

Also trying to find more info on Joey Magnifico (Memphis) since I read about him on the Colts.com front page earlier.  Sounds like he got a knee infection after a routine cleaning, but could be a steal in late rounds or UDFA.

I agree. Alot of solid guys. Hunter Bryant is another guy I like as well.

I didn't see where the OP compared him to Gronk.

Personally I think Kmet will make any team that drafts him one hellava TE.

He don't have to be a Gronk, there was only one.

Gronk was one of those players you hated at times but you wished he was on your team.  :dunno:

Another Dilger or Clark would be real nice.

It's in the thread title.

Reportedly, the Colts were showing an interest in Bryce Hopkins, the TE from Purdue, a while back.  I like Kmet better.

I think we need another TE.  Not sure why so many are sold on MAC after such limited play, (I would not rely on him to be TE#1 if/when Doyle got dinged again).

Of course, the biggest need is another WR.

I'm hoping Colts draft a TE and a WR each by pick 75, or at least 122.

If we traded down from 34 to get a pick in the mid second and mid third, that would be a good situation for picking up both and still leaving us with two decent picks before round 4 with which to get a swing G/OT and a defensive player.

Maybe Kmet would last until pick 40 or so.

Well, THAT would certainly boost jersey sales.

I watched a lot of Norte Dame football this year.  I’d love it the Colts got Kmet.  I think he’s going to be a really good pro.

Yes.  He is a "football player".  The fact that he measures and times well, is pretty traitsy also, puts him into the upper second round at worst, IMO.

There is no TE in this year's class who should illicit the "G" word.  That's just crazy talk until he starts grabbing contested TDs in double coverage and throwing people out of the club. Glad we got that over with.

That being said, the TE run will start somewhere in the 2nd round where we have 2 picks at present time.

Ballard could opt for Adam Trautman if he doesn't like his other options at 34 or 44 (34 probably a little early).

I like the idea of a local product coming on and developing into a good player, but I don't have any illusions about finding a pro bowl TE in this draft.  I'd be less surprised to see Ballard take a player like C Cesar Ruiz at 34 than whoever he thinks is the best TE at that point.

You've got that backwards. Moss' blocking is his biggest strength and his athleticism is extremely lacking. If you watch his film, his routes look one speed and lack anything resembling explosion or burst. He's mean blocker though and has really good hands.

Where RiversRun, I been saying this for months but lots on here think Kmet is a bust and I laugh at that notion.  I believe he will be top 3 at the position as early as his rookie yr but that's just my $.02!  Good to see more fans seeing what I've been preaching!

GoColts, I feel the same about Kmet and cant help but feel like any team will be getting a steal due to Book losing his confidence and really regressing as a QB in 2019!  No doubt in my mind he would've been a top 20 pick in the first rd if it wasn't for Book and I will go one step further and say that his teammate Chase Claypool is in the same boat.  Both will be labeled steals of the 2020 draft no doubt in my mind because I too watched every game living just 20 minutes away.

I don't think a rookie TE has ever came in and been considered top 3. Rookie TE's rarely put up that kind of production.

I think he has that potential but your right maybe a tad too much so top 10 is more realistic.  Rivers loves his TE's and RB's :)

Gronk is definitely still a HOFer...possibly even 1st ballot.

Very average athlete + very average production = very average pro.

This guy is pretty much limited to up the seams out-muscle at the catch point.  His athleticism isn't going to wow anyone, especially his lateral agility.  He's capable of catching the ball with an extended radius, but he body catches more often than not.

I think he'll be blanketed at the next level.  He's definitely not a first round guy.

Sorry, 85 was already Philip's better-than-Gronk. The 17-to-85 connection is ahead of the 12-to-87 connection in QB-to-TE NFL history. Of course, that'll happen when 17-to-85 is NUMBER 1 IN QB-TO-TE NFL HISTORY. Look it up. Everyone else is 2nd rate.

Nothing against Kmet. And certainly nothing against Gronk. He absolutely is a Hall of Famer.

But Philip will never have another 85. Just the way it is.

Kmet and Trautman are definitely my favs, but there are several others I like after those two. Albert Oku... is one of the guys I'd take middle rounds if we don't get Kmet or Trautman. I also think folks will be surprised that MAC gets a decent amount of snaps this year regardless.

Kmet will be a good player that will get to about 2-4 pro bowls but thats about it. I don't see an All Pro caliber player in Kmet. Comparing him to Gronk is comparing a Ford to a Lamborghini.

Albert O is the Tight End I want. Yes he's a project, but most of these Tight Ends in this class are. I like the kid from Dayton Trautman too as well as Bryant.

    • Rick Venturi today on the radio said he is more of a fan of speed with corners then what Ballard has done. He said young corners have to be able to recover from mistakes. I would almost like rodgers instead of Brent’s.
    • BBZ, what do you mean when you say Brents will be successfully targeted because of his size and speed? Aren't those his good traits?
    • Right. But we also are expected to draft a corner, So the fact that DeJean can play either position, makes me think Ballard could have his eye on him.
    • As a Ballard type player, he seems to fit the bill.  Big 10. Excels at zone coverage. Elite athlete. Special Teams standout, Good tackler. etc. Colts may be able to trade back, and still land DeJean   Considered one of the Safest picks. Seven 2024 NFL Draft Prospects Who Are Safest Bets to Succeed at Next Level https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10113875-7-2024-nfl-draft-prospects-who-are-safest-bets-to-succeed-at-next-level   DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa   A fractured fibula during a November practice tempered any excitement regarding Cooper DeJean's draft status. So he's not been in the same conversations as the class' top defensive backs, specifically Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and Alabama's Terrion Arnold. DeJean's profile projects just as well or better than the aforementioned cornerbacks.   Three specific attributes set DeJean's floor higher than anyone else among the back end.   First, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year presents the positional flexibility and traits to start at cornerback or safety at the professional level, with B/R's Cory Giddings highlighting his coverage skills:   "DeJean excels in zone coverage, but he's versatile enough to play man as well. He shows a smooth backpedal and the ability to keep his leverage and quick footwork with few wasted steps. Although he transitions well, there are times where DeJean hops into his breaks; allowing a step of separation.   "When in zone, DeJean does a great job of reading and reacting to the quarterback's eyes. Pairing that skill set with his route recognition, he often puts himself in good position with leverage and positioning.   "While working downfield, DeJean has the strength necessary to hand-fight with tight ends and bigger receivers, as well as the speed necessary to carry twitchier receivers downfield. He also does a very good job of locating the ball and playing through the catch point."   Second, the high school track standout is an elite athlete who captured Iowa state titles in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Many expected him to blow the doors off Lucas Oil Stadium. Unfortunately, he wasn't ready to test in Indianapolis after being cleared a few weeks earlier.   "His acceleration is incredibly fluid and super powerful," NFL combine trainer Jordan Luallen told The Athletic's Bruce Feldman last summer. "He's the best athlete I've seen in person, pound for pound."   Finally, DeJean adds significant value as an elite collegiate returner. Big Ten coaches also awarded him Return Specialist of the Year this past season. DeJean averaged 13.1 yards per punt return over the last two seasons. A top-notch contributor anywhere along the defensive backfield and on special teams will provide excellent value in the NFL.   Potential Landing Spots: Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles
    • He could, but I think he's way more athletic than people give him credit for and projects way better as CB. Definitely could be a good safety, but I think if we drafted him, he fits well as a boundary corner for us.
