The bottom line is the country can’t be out of work for months. We can’t sustain that. What we do have to find is a balance in keeping ourselves safer and protecting the most vulnerable. This pause for a few weeks will give the country time to make more medical supplies and be prepared for a outbreak. It will also allow officials to target the bad areas. Majority of everything is happening in NY. All we can do is keep as much distance from  others as possible. Keep your hands clean. We can get the people who aren’t able to work right now hopefully back to work.

I think the governor of Indiana stay at home order was a nice balance. It said If your employer says you are essential you can keep working. Nail salons and that type of thing should be closed.

My family isn’t allowing anyone in our home. As both my parents are over 60 and my dad with AFIB. Then my auto immune disease.  My niece and nephew usually come over when there is no school but my sister is  making them stay at home. Their dad works from home most of the time.

Last night, my daughter mentioned that she couldn't taste anything at supper.  Kept adding red pepper powder.  So this morning's article caught my eye.

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/world-news/lost-sense-of-smell-may-be-peculiar-clue-to-coronavirus-infection/articleshow/74767666.cms

This is definitely one of the signs. My sister lives in Switzerland, and she developed the same thing, along with the usual flu like symptoms. She had already been quarantined due to government order, so wasn’t out spreading it around. She did a virtual ER visit and they told her she most likely has Covid, but that they are only testing those 60 and above so no way to confirm. They told her to continue to quarantine. She said she is already feeling much better and has her senses back.  Keep monitoring her, especially if she is high risk. If she starts to suffer from any of the severe symptoms call 911 or get her to an ER immediately, but make sure you call 911 and let them know exactly what is going on so they are prepared.

Yes. My sister reported that a friend of hers living in London sent her a message informing her that she lost her senses of smell and taste. Then she read this article below and is now in quarantine.

So India is recommending all healthcare workers and family members who come in contact with someone with it be prescribed Hydrochlorinique. Seems there is evidence it can be used as a preventive like Tameflu. If this actually proves to be a effective treatment and preventive we are going to be in good shape.  We already know the side effects as it has been used for years treating other conditions. We need to pray for the people in NY who are going to start getting this tomorrow.  It also says if taken correctly a person will become a non transmitter. 2 pills in 24 hours then once a week.

Hydrochlorinique and theraflu aren't nearly the same thing

I  never said they were. What I was saying is you can take theraflu as preventive if you were exposed to the flu. It’s looking like this drug can do the same thing for this virus. I saw the actual India memo and it says after taking the dose you will also not be able to transit anything to others. That is pretty big if this is correct.  There is a lot of hope this is going to work. Israel is sending the US 6 million tablets. People seem to be so negative about this entire thing. There is hope. Not saying anyone on here is like this but it seems so many people want millions to die by being so negative about how this might work.

Yeah, sometimes the more I hear some media outlets, they are more concerned about the POTUS being wrong or acknowledging everything he did wrong (when has he ever done that, keep wishing over a wishing well) than what happens with American lives, that is the impression they give.

Absolutely counter productive.

The POTUS can lose even without it.

Yeah, when they portray Chinese government as heroes for helping Italy, it reminded me of America helping rebuild Japan after WWII after dropping a couple of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki (not literally but you get my point). Oh well!!! That is all I am going to say now.

I have a very close friend who has a medical discharge from the Army.

He has a very low immune system and VA doctors are giving him Hydrochlorinique to help him combat the virus. He was on that drug when he was at Walter Reed Hospital fighting for his life from a bacteria he got in Kuwait.

How that is connected I don't know?

Yes my friend was in very bad shape and was not expected to live at one point. He swears by that drug. He thinks it helped save his life back then. That was back in 1991 or so.

The VA doctors put him back on that drug about a month ago.

Stay safe my friend.

Our governor has put the stay at home executive order out for our state. Hopefully it helps to curve the spread of this.

Americans will only tolerate so much lockdown. They have families to feed.  As a country we can only sustain this a few weeks. Hopefully this pause will allow supply to be ramped up and a plan enacted to protect the most vulnerable.  Hopefully the  people in charge will find the right balance and target areas that might need isolated more.

The people in charge need to quit making this political and work together.

I know we can't get into that but it's hard not to touch on it because it's effects on all of us.

You guys need to do what ever you can to avoid other people for the next couple of weeks.

It's hitting the US like no other countrie right now.

10.000 new cases in the last 48 hours, that's a lot and worse than most other countries.

I know Donald are more focused in the economy, but if you don't listen up and do what you individually can to avoid infection, there will be no football for you... like ever again.

We just saw how students partied for spring break in Florida last night... wth.... are no one in the US taking this thing serious?

If things develop like it does right now, you will have more than 100.000 infected within the next few days.

so PLEASE

STAY AT HOME - WASH YOUR HANDS - AVOID OTHER PEOPLE - AND AT LEAST KEEP DISTANCE TO OTHER PEOPLE.

Like do you have any actual evidence of this, or let me rephrase, do you understand what you just implied?

Hazel Fenton of Sussex back in 2009 was deemed only to have a few days to live, NHS withdrew anti-biotics and denied artificial feeding. She survived.  Jack Jones was on the Liverpool Care Pathway plan when doctors thought his cancer had returned and became terminal. They put him in deep sedation and denied him food and water. He died not from cancer that he didn't actually have, but from a treatable infection.  Of course Alfie Evans, which doctors withdrew care and then your government refused to allow his family to find care elsewhere. There are dozens more cases where the NHS is denying care for people yearly.

There are books written about how bad the NHS is and its financial woes, and how badly its affecting patient care. Emergency care wait times are going up, routine care scheduling gets pushed far the right. It is becoming increasingly difficult for people to get through to their GP in order to schedule care, therefore pushing people to A & E.  Twenty-seven percent of people are having to wait for more than a week and even up to 18 weeks care. Xray, MRIs, CT Scans, and ultrasounds are not meeting their  NHS recommended 6 week time frame and one in seven people wait over three months.

The list of restricted treatments continues to grow, to include hip replacements, knee surgery and hernia repair. The system requires patients to meet certain criteria in order to be eligible for treatment, such as the level of impairment, and sending these treatment decisions to a funding panel and taken out of the hands of the GP.  Even your very own specialist associations are criticizing your restrictive policies. People can't afford to take off work for debilitating illnesses but the NHS can't or won't approve the care, making their situation worse.

The UK Health Foundation points all this out:

• Essential parts of the NHS in England are experiencing the worst performance against waiting times targets since the targets were set. This includes the highest proportion of people waiting more than four hours in A&E departments since 2004, and the highest proportion of people waiting over 18 weeks for non-urgent (but essential) hospital treatment since 2008.

 • The target for treating cancer patients within 62 days of urgent GP referral has not been met for over 5 years, and survey evidence suggests more people are experiencing lengthening delays in getting GP appointments.

 • Longer waits are a symptom of more people needing treatment than the NHS has the capacity to deliver. This reflects a decade of much lower than average funding growth for the NHS and workforce shortages, coupled with growing and changing population health needs. These pressures are exacerbated by cuts to social care and public health budgets, which make it harder to keep people healthy outside hospitals.

• It will take sustained investment in the NHS and social care to reverse lengthening waits. This will include filling existing staff vacancies and growing the workforce, investment in buildings and equipment, and stabilising the social care sector.

Anecdotal: My friends son fractured his arm, they went to the local hospital and they sent him home because they thought it was a sprain and didn't want to do an xray.  His arm continued to be a problem and began to heal improperly. They had to re-set his arm and cast it.

Yes I am, and nice to see your appreciation for it...

There's two levels or response we can talk about here. The purely medical services and the overall government societal measure. Which one do you want to attack using faulty data first?

my last post covered the medical aspect, but from a government societal measure; we all know these precautions being put in place about staying at home and avoiding everyone is not to try and stop the virus, it is to try and stop the healthcare systems from being overrun. This applies to the world and not just the UK however.  80% of the population is likely going to get it in some form or another and at some point or another. By teleworking, alternating shifts, and staying at home, you slow down the demand for medical services. So instead of one massive overwhelming wave that crashes the system and providers, it is a more manageable steady rise and plateau.

Denmark has a higher rate of infection than the US per capita.   Perhaps you should be passing this info along to your countrymen.

Here in Indiana we have it under control pretty much. There have been some cases and as of now I think less than 10 deaths overall. On my way home from work earlier there was nobody out. I worked 3rd shift last night. I just went to put gas in my car about 30 minutes ago and I seen maybe 10 cars, normally at 8am 100's of people are out = rush hour. Indy looks like they are being smart about this.

Exactly. Many say that there won't be that many deaths from COVID-19 and that it is no different from the flu. It is because of the drastic measures ("overreaction") that more people won't die.

There will be deaths from seasonal flu, and Covid-19.  The difference (notably for the latter) is how many of those fatalities, that may well have otherwise been prevented, were because treatment was minimal/unavailable for a lack of ICU beds/ventilators/etc. and not because treatment wasn't effective.

Some people get it, don't take anything and never really appear sick. There was a large group at a Seattle party get it.

"A dozen of them formed a group on Facebook and seven were tested. All came back positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Schneider, a bioengineer, was fascinated by the vast range of experiences they all had.

One of her friends who tested positive for the virus had no symptoms at all but his employer’s rules required he be tested because he’d likely been exposed. Another had only a little congestion in her chest and felt a little tired."

Now I'm for 'off label compassionate use' of the drugs in various clinical trials (IE: remdesivir, the Z-Pak + Chloroquine combo, etc...). That is for those severely ill and is the equivalent of throwing spaghetti on the wall hoping some sticks.  Otherwise, there is a reason to do trials.

In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do.  Dr. Anthony Fauci said "We’re trying to strike a balance between making something with a potential of an effect to the American people available, at the same time that we do it under the auspices of a protocol that would give us information to determine if it’s truly safe and truly effective."

The U.S. will start clinical trials soon if not already, beginning with Phase 1 (the small France trial was hastily designed, even by Phase 1 standards).  @SteelCityColt may appreciate this. Of those drugs in trial making it to Phase 2, only 27.5% of those made it on to phase 3 (between 2009-2015).  And even those that made it to Phase 3, only 63% made it on through.

This shows what looked promising in early small studies either were shown to be ineffective and/or had side effects that made them unusable.

Remdesivir (I believe a drug developed for ebola) is currently in phase 3 testing in China and a randomized, controlled clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy in hospitalized adults diagnosed with COVID-19 has recently begun at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The Chinese test results should be by end of April. The World Health Organization recently said it would launch a multicountry clinical trial for potential coronavirus therapies as part of an aggressive effort to jump start the global search for drugs to treat Covid19. Four drugs or drug combinations already licensed and used for other illnesses will be tested. The need is collect solid data to indicate if they can improve clinical outcomes, safely.

Thorsten, I love you man but please stop generalizing our country by what you are seeing on a delayed and seemingly biased news feed. Our country is taking this very seriously. I am a firefighter and am on the frontlines of this, and I can assure you that From what I’ve seen and the information we’ve been given, most are not taking this as a joke. There are  imbeciles in every country, as I’m sure you are very well aware of.

Many state governments have imposed stay at home orders, and there’s many more to come.

Almost all restaurants, bars,  and any type of gathering place has been closed. Only drive through and carry out for food.

Trillions of dollars will be allocated to help both with healthcare and economic recovery from this pandemic.

Many manufactures have switched to manufacturing needed medical supplies.

What the government is trying to avoid is spreading mad chaos and pandemonium that it seems some of these “news” outlets want to create.

In NY they are starting to use it today. And rumor has it they were giving it already and it’s working.  It seems that it is working. If it works as a preventive even better.

I just saw today that places like Kroger, Walmart and Amazon are hiring hundreds of thousands of people. I imagine they have lost some employees because they are elderly or immune compromised. Plus they probably need more people to stocks shelves and deliveres. There are jobs for people who may need one until they do back to their regular job.

it’s mainly due to the order demand.
