Colts interested in Clowney

Clowney and Buckner would anchor a scary good D-line.   With Houston as well.

the more I think about it the more I think it needs to happen.  We’d be talking a nickname caliber Dline.

the rotation would be awesome with the younger guys.  SF had half dozen stud Dlinemen.  That’s why we have Buckner.

I assume Turay, Lewis or Banoga would be the 4th D-lineman.   That would go from one of the worst D-lines in the league to one of the best.

Its all about price and fit. Clowney on a one year deal would be fun to watch. He'll be wanting that big payday, and motivated to get it after what happened to him this year. Could they get him at $16m for one year? At that price and on those terms, I'd do it. And if he plays to his potential, this Colts D will be Super.

interesting.  It seems like the strategy would be the same with line numbers too.  They set the line where people will lay the most cash.

do the oddsmakers know a whole lot of football?  I wouldn’t think so.  Is there a difference between lines and exotics?

A typical sports line.... they typically have a lot more "intel" than gut. Exotics, the opposite (except for parlays). Vegas line makers know a ton about FB, and employ everything from X-NFL guys to statisticians creating algorithms just for the sport.  Likely have current guys in the NFL on payroll lol.

Here's a high level blurb about how they profit on typical X vs Y betting. Basically "balance" and "center" are the themes with shading a factor.

https://www.sportsinsights.com/betting-tools/sportsbook-profit-margins/

On exotics, they use that same intel, but rely more on shading at the front. Profit margin on exotics are typically much higher. If you include Parlays with exotics, much much higher.

IDK...Clowney is overly expensive and he can't seem to play a full season because of injuries. His asking price would need to come down a lot.

Can't help but dream about this Dline in Tampa!!!  Adding VET leadership can be the difference between watching the biggest game and playing in the biggest game.

Dianna Russini of ESPN reports today that the Raiders are not interested in Clowney.  Two teams that reportedly are would be the Titans and Seahawks.  Although the Seahawks offer would now be less than what he was offered from them when he originally entered FA.   Tom Pellisaro of NFL network thinks the Seahawks have moved.   Steve Wyche of NFL network thinks he might have to settle for a one year prove it deal similar to what Dante Fowler did last year for around 14M.  If Wyche is right his price might be entering Colts territory for a 1yr. deal.  I think the Colts are a perfect fit because he won't be getting double teamed with Buckner in the middle and Houston on one side.  I sure hope Ballard is involved in conversations with his agent.  BTW he looked great in the video he released yesterday.

Wait, so what's he ever done that has portrayed "bad attitude"? He just want's to get paid (perhaps more than we think he's worth, but eh..). This is a business. Also CB said he knows our locker room can handle some stars & egos now. With us going all in, I HOPE (don't think) we can settle on a price. How satisfying would it be to steal him from the Titans after stealing Jonathan Taylor from the Texans lolol.

Jags** , sorry. Texans have O'Brien... we don't need to steal anything from them, he'll handle that.

Clowney's not the sharpest knife in the kitchen.  If he had half a brain he'd sign with a team who has a strong 3T that can draw doubles, but who has an open blindside position, and ride that to a big statistical season and contract.

Longer you wait as a FA though, the less cap space is available.  So he's painted himself into a corner and at this point he's gotta go with fit or greed.  Do you want the most money you can get now?  Or are you smart enough to roll the dice by going with a low end deal but the right situation.

Maybe there's a team out there who can offer him both, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I do think his agent is smart enough to put him in the best situation for him to succeed not just short term but long term.  I agree that our situation with the all pro 3T is perfect for him.  We also have the superior OL he won't have to face if he decides to choose the Titans.  I don't think Ballard would actually low ball him intentionally.  He has said he feels both sides have to be happy with any deal reached.  So I think he would offer him a fair current market value offer if he was interested.   We certainly have the resources and the right situation for him to get a deal done if both sides come in willing to negotiate.  Agents are supposed to work in the best interest of their clients.  So I would expect him tp present the positives and negatives of any offers he receives.  I'm just hoping we are talking because of all the teams being mentioned I think we are the team that would fit his situation the best.

Hmm. I could see him going to the Eagles.

It doesn't look promising for sure.  Have to hope his agent has Ballard on speed dial and we swoop in at the last minute and sign him.

Yeah... no telling.... the only fairly sure thing is that IF Ballard is interested, he has a $$$ number he won’t go a penny beyond.

I’m fine with bringing him in at a 12m base plus incentives.... but if 5 teams really do have interest and we ain’t one of them I’m not  holding my breath.

I agree with what someone else posted somewhere (sorry, I've forgotten who or where). What this team needs now more than anything else is a good, solid, veteran backup offensive tackle, to at least compete with Clark, and hopefully improve on him. That's the position I'd like to see invested in most of all right now.

I still say the 'presence' of Clowney (if signed) would lessen the loss of Houston next offseason and still have a healthy rotation of 'potential' pass rushers in Turay, Banogu and Lewis.

For what it’s worth... this article does not mention us as a destination for Clowney.

https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/eagles/nfl-rumors-jadeveon-clowney-eagles-interest

the eagles have money and a need at the position just like we do.

i posted about a week ago, colts, titans and eagles are the only good teams remaining that can afford to pay clowney and have a need a DE.  im assuming the seahawks have moved on, if not then they would be on the list too

How many people heard about us signing a DT in the offseason? Everyone talked about us getting a DT or QB with our pick and then BOOM!!

Up until this off-season not a soul.... and the Buckner trade didn’t produce even the whisper of a rumor beforehand... so anything is possible with Clowney still out there.

Ballard stepped beyond his usual off-season M.O. as we know it... and he used every means available in a big way to juice up the roster.

Nice to see it!

Like I said before, as long as the bean counters are good for the near future, I'm very happy they are spending the money. Seem's like they're going all in for the short term, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if we add another player or two. Not saying it needs to be Clowney, but I wouldn't be surprised at all. I'd bet Ballard is still shopping several guys, and have made a few team friendly offers. If Rivers responds well to having a much improved OL, things could be quite nice this year.

He doesn’t really want to work, so, he’s waiting for some suckers to pay him big money to half-* it.

To me, it's the last move we can logically make to put us in position to make a run in the postseason. After all the other moves he made, how can Ballard not close it out by signing another legit pass rusher, even if it's just for the 2020 season.

I highly doubt that Clown will sign a one year deal with any team. He is looking for the most amount of money he can get. (is that what we want in our locker room?)

IMO we do not need Clown to make a legitimate run in the playoffs.

He is over rated and too expensive.

At this stage in the game, Clowney will either need to accept a one year deal with incentives to make big cash because he isn’t getting 18 million + any other way or he will have to take a below avg market 3 year deal if he wanted longer term security. I have the feeling, based on the many articles out there questioning his effort and football desire, that teams are real concerned to give him the long term contract with big money with large guarantees. It’s not going to surprise me if he doesn’t get a 1 yr deal worth 12+ incentives. He carries to many flags to give a Buckner like deal imho.

    • I really like the routes pittman ran, and those HANDS. Only thing missing rn is confidence and mastery of playbook.
    • Welcome to the board pride of Athens!!  It’s always good to hear that the colts have a new fan. It’s just too bad you weren’t here for the manning years. For those of us that watched him every Sunday throughout his career, we were  super spoiled, and we will probably never see another player like him wear the horseshoe on their helmet in our lifetime.   With that said, we did have some heart breaking losses in the playoffs, (some to your rivers led bolts!!)  so us longtime colts fans know about pain.  In some ways it’s worse expecting to win it all than being horrible and knowing you don’t have a chance. At least then you can kinda expect to lose and not get so invested into it.  But I’m not looking for a pity party for this team. There are plenty of other franchises that have had it absolutely rough For decades so I can only imagine how they must feel.  But like I said earlier it’s great to have you on our board and hopefully you stay on here and remain a colts fan even after rivers retires. (Hopefully In 2 years after 2 Super Bowl wins). Lol.
    • Are we getting week 1 colts or week 2 colts? If our defense is anything like it was today, its over
    • My Favorite stat is 28 is a higher number than 11.
    • Lol. I was not far off in my prediction.
