Happy 39th to Robert Mathis - the Sack Strip King

The dude was massive for the Colts. Hard to believe he played during the same time as Freeney.

Yea, it's kinda like Reggie and Marv.  Mathis came into the league when Freeney was already a feared pass rusher.  Who knows if he (or Freeney) would've had such prolonged success if he was solo... same with Reg, Marv was already an elite WR and it took Reg 3 years to really settle in, but then they really complimented each other well.

Reggie did show us something starting with 2009, when he took Garcon and Collie under his wing when Gonzo went down. Then, with Luck, he showed he had it again in 2012 and 2013 before injuries in 2014 led him to end up being ineffective.

Both Reggie without Marv and Mathis without Freeney, showed us enough with a solid floor for production though the one year 19.5 sack year aberration in 2013 was twice his typical average of 9-10 sacks a year. Mathis did get suspended in 2014 for 4 games for PEDs, so it did make me wonder about 2013. He was never the same after that.

I agree that later in their careers Reggie and Mathis showed us they could ball... but they both had slow starts (took Reggie 3 years, took Mathis 2 to really turn it on).  They definitely benefited from having Marv and Freeney to take some pressure off them and take them under their wings early in their careers.  And I'm sure Marv and Freeney benefited from having guys a few years younger than them to help take pressure off them when the young ones started to blossom.
