9 inch hands for QB's...

Recommended Posts

QB is clearly a position where hand size can and often does matter.

Make all the size jokes you want,  but all 32 teams have size requirements for every position.   Including quarterback.

Now, coming up short on hand size alone isn't disqualifying.    But it IS a red flag to teams.   They will now go back and re-watch tape

on guys like Burrow and Fromm.    Every fumble.   Every fluttering duck of a pass.   Every game in bad weather.

Consider Burrow....   if he goes to Cincy,  that means every year he's playing in Cleveland, Pittsuburgh and Baltimore.    Cincinnati might have the best weather in that division.    Bad weather equals more concern about a QB with small hands.

Here's a good ESPN article about the issue of hand size for QB's....   some good info in here for you to consider...

Fromm had a bad spring game in 2019 in bad weather:

https://www.timesfreepress.com/news/sports/college/story/2019/apr/21/jake-fromm-struggles-during-inclement-g-day-a/493050/

Fromm also had a bad game against Texas A&M in bad weather:

https://www.ajc.com/sports/college/what-wrong-with-jake-fromm-and-georgia-offense/6HYL93qFgfdWFHvOUgrEqO/

He also threw for only 35 yards against Kentucky in another bad weather game:

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/boxscores/2019-10-19-georgia.html

There might be fire under all the smoke here.

This might drop him a lot and eliminate him from the board of teams that play outside and have bad weather winters.

Mahomes is 9.25, he has done well for himself.

Here are some articles that talk about it:

https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2018/3/1/17066910/nfl-combine-hand-measurement-quarterback-draft

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2019/02/nfl-combine-kyler-murray-hand-size-doesnt-matter

Fromm wasn't wowing many with his physical talents anyways, and his comp. was Colt McCoy on nfl.com, if I remember right. Maybe he falls to Round 3?

Man, that would be an ideal situation, IMO.  Colts focus on DT and WR/Safety with the first two picks and then pick up Fromm at pick 44.

Mahomes throw is super unique too, he throws it more like a baseball than a traditional throwing motion.

I like Anthony Gordon’s upside more than Fromm’s, to be honest. I’d rather get him in Round 3.

His lack of arm strength could have definitely been part of that as well. I guess it would come down to what the issues in those games were, but both hand size and arm strength don't help him in those conditions.

I am a fan of Gordon's as well and I think 3rd round will be way too early, I think Gordon is a 4th or 5th rounder at best.  But that is just my opinion.

The reason I like From more though is because I think Fromm has a better understanding and head for the game and I think Fromm will win most plays before the ball is even snapped.

We will have to play most likely in the AFC outdoors in the playoffs vs the likes of Ravens, Patriots, Chiefs, Steelers; so arm strength in those conditions where the ball will have to cut through the air will become important. Otherwise, you are stuck with a Chad Pennington like situation where teams will sit on underneath stuff from Fromm.

That's a good point.  But from watching him, I don't think his arm is as weak as some reports are indicating.  And I think the amount of zip on his balls can be improved with proper mechanics by engaging his trunk and lower body more on throws.

His footwork is atrocious and could be argued balance is why his throws haven't much air on them.

Yes, the weather impacted Fromm's stats quite significantly.  Rain.  Hand size could be an issue, as it also limits the ability to generate a tight spiral.

Arm strength, or forward velocity, is probably has more to do with his lower body mechanics which is coachable, and not hand size.

Spiral is more of a physical thing, IMO.  I would think that would matter to a team like NE more than NO.

Agreed.  Fromm doesn't have a weak arm.  He can throw it as far as typically needed without  a lot of arc.

The tight windows that he may not throw it as well as other QBs are too risky of a throw anyway.

Another reason hand size probably matter is because the NFL football is about a tad more wider around than the college edition:

https://www.ozy.com/the-huddle/when-football-players-go-pro-their-balls-get-bigger/90091/

I found this quote interesting from a WR, which means it matters for pass catchers too:

The NFL ball lacks stripes, and the college ball has two white ones painted halfway around. Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White, the seventh overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, prefers catching balls with the white stripes of the college ball he used at West Virginia. “It’s easier to see,” he says.

Then Fromm would be a great fit for NE.  They are accustomed to making the footballs a tad smaller......

Frank Reich on what he looks for in a QB.

Toughness, accelerated vision(field awareness), accuracy, good feet, intangibles (leadership, playmaker in the big moments)

Also talked about leaning on the staff to stay ahead of the field and be competitive, does not want to be a copy cat but wants to look at new things and determine how they fit into what he wants to do.

I would not say it's attrocious, inconsistent is the phrase I'd use.  But yeah, if he gets his lower body mechanics in order and consistent, combined with his head for the game, could lead to a very, very good QB.

I agree. He’s my favorite and Gordon next. Fromm is a natural leader much the same way Jacoby is. He is a motivator and I think that is a style of leadership most accepted by fellow players .

Length of last name seems to have a bigger impact than hand side to QB success. There has never been a QB win SB with last name shorter than 5 letters. And only 1 QB with last name longer than 9 letters.

So much for Hollingsworth Mcgillicutty  from the Butte School of Optometry.

Yeah, none longer than 9 letters till Roethlisberger won it in 2005, there’s always a first, Steelers should have listened to your advice, lol. Here’s to new trend setters.

By that token, we shouldn’t have had hopes for Luck winning a SB then. :)

Hogwash.

I'm not totally clueless lol. I know good and well it's a worthless statistic, but its a fact nonetheless. There have been more small handed QBs win the big game than small named QBs.... And u brought up Andrew, how many did he win?.. I'm just sayin' lol

I got your point of not shying away from small handed QBs if they are really good just like we didn't shy away from drafting Andrew Luck because of his last name not having enough letters for winning SBs, that is my point. Glad to see you realize it is a worthless statistic, just like saying no QB with a last name starting with C has won the SB. :)
