The 2020 Combine: One Stop Shopping...

Recommended Posts

Since many here apparently do NOT read the front page of the website on a daily basis,  I thought I'd like up a couple of stories about what to expect at the Combine which starts tomorrow....      First up, a Day by Day summary of what to look for....

https://www.colts.com/news/nfl-scouting-combine-2020-colts-preview-draft

Next Up, a Positional breakdown of players currently on our roster,  and players that CB has acquired in any form...   draft, free agent,  etc.

It covers all possible aspects and gives you an idea of the type of player Ballard and his scouts are looking for.   Height, Weight, Speed,  Strength,  Length,  Jumping,  etc, etc.

Remember,  beyond physical testing,  the Combine is important because of things that we likely won't hear about.   Job interviews,  medical testing,  psycological testing.     Some of these things may leak out over time,   but we likely won't learn about them in real time.    And many of these things involve aspects that Ballard and company care about.    Namely Character.     Annually, we likely have the smallest Big Board of players we are willing to draft.   Many talented kids we bypass because of other flaws and red flags in their profile that we may never know about.

These two stories are on the front page of the website.    I did not see them discussed anywhere.    If I'm wrong,  (and I may be)  then my apologies...

No, not that I’m aware of.

All teams guard that kind of info with a life and death type of approach.   Like government state secrets.   If they showed you, they’d have to kill you.   You get the idea.....

    • So, Dallas traded back with Detroit from #51 to #67 and still got Kyle Dugger.. that's some good value, and they have an extra pick in 3rd round! Two more picks in third round for Dallas, can get a top TE still if they want.   Detroit did well too by trading up, overall got Okudah, Blacklock and Terrell Lewis - all in on their defensive rebuild. That looks great for both teams. Somehow Patricia still wouldn't rush them at QB even if he gets all of them.
    • I liked John Simon while he was here, sad to see him cut in 2018. I know he didnt fit what we were moving to but good solid player.
    • Maybe Jon Hand.    Bradtzke wasn't even here very long, would be interested to see those numbers. For some reason, every season I'm telling at our DL to get their hands up and always think back to Bradtzke.?
    • Wilson and Mahomes II will fare better than Jackson and some others more similar to Lamar.  These two have extensive baseball backgrounds, especially Russell.  Patrick's dad was a Major League pitcher.  They both know to to slide properly, and also when when to slide/duck/avoid the throw to first on a double play attempt.  This transfers to slide in the NFL to avoid big hits.  Other QB's don't learn this trait well growing up in football, and also seem to be more inclined to be a 'tough guy' and grind a couple more yards, or try to twitch out of a tackle.   Cam's game is to use his legs often, not just throw or hand off, and the hits pile up.  There's only so much gas in the tank. It's prudent to wonder how much Cam has left in his.
    • The Jets Situation - The offensive line was a disaster.  Expensive free agent Le'Veon Bell had only 3.2 yards per carry.  And 2nd year rookie QB Sam Darnold had few weapons to throw to.  It wasn't all bad.  7th in total defense.  2nd in rushing defense.   Free agent moves (some of them, anyway) George Fant, OT, Seattle (3 years, $30mm) Conner McGovern, C, Denver (3 years, $27mm) Greg Van Roten, OG, Carolina (3 years, $10.5mm) Josh Andrews, OG, Indianapolis (unknown yet) Breshad Perriman, WR, Tampa Bay (1 year, $8mm) Pierre Desir, CB, Indianapolis (1 year)   2020 Mock Draft 1/11 - CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma 2/48 - Prince Tega Wanogho, OT, Auburn   And with the 68th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select   John Hightower, WR, Boise State   @ColtsGermany with the Carolina Panthers is on the clock
