The mock draft link on Colts.com's front page has Charlie Campbell suggesting the Colts are going to make a serious run at JaDeveon Clowney... any idea if this is true?

https://www.colts.com/news/mock-draft-monday-2020-nfl-draft-0203

Selection: Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina

Expert: Charlie Campbell, WalterFootball.com

Date of mock draft: Feb. 3 (link)

Analysis: "Sources told me Indianapolis is interested in making a run at Jadeveon Clowney in free agency. That would make sense as the Colts could use more edge rush, but they could also use more talent on the inside of their defensive line. Here's a difference-maker for the inside. Kinlaw was superb for the Gamecocks in 2019, totaling 35 tackles, six sacks and two passes defended. The big defensive tackle broke out in 2018 with 4.5 sacks, 10 tackles for a loss and 38 tackles. The first thing that stands out about Kinlaw (6-5, 315) is his size. He is a tall, thick and good-looking athlete. After passing the eyeball test, one can see some special ability as Kinlaw really fires off the ball. He is quick to close and has strength to fight off blockers. Kinlaw gets in trouble when he stands up too high and working on his technique will help him to get more out of his excellent skill set. The junior college product has a lot of upside and has the size to play a variety of techniques in a 4-3 or 3-4 defense."

If we got Kinlaw and Clowney, our DL would go from one of our weaknesses to being one of the better DL's in the NFL (IMO).. especially if Turay and Banogu continue to make progress/stay healthy..

Great post

We have the cap space for Clooney and the draft spot for Kinlaw

I would love this move........ Our DL would move to top 5 by these two moves

This step would also allow our fast LBs to make more plays as they wouldn’t have to deal with OL

Our dbs won’t have to cover the WRs for 10 mins

Getting Turay back will also help

One can only hope... and you're right, adding those pieces to our DL would immediately improve the rest of our D for the reasons you pointed out.

Not only that, but I think Leonard and Okerere are going to continue to improve as LBers (maybe Speed starts to see the field, too -- Ballard had a quote on him recently saying he's as physically talented as any of the LBers but is just more raw than all of them).  I also think we'll see Ya-Sin and some of our younger DBs improve on their own this off-season.... having a legit pass rush that cuts the coverage time down (and hopefully forces more errant throws from opposing QBs) will make that group even better than them simply making improvements on their own.

I've wanted the Colts to draft a top DT since the draft years of Vita Vea, Ed Oliver, even Dontari Poe. So this Kinlaw possibility is as close to these types of value players as we can get in 2020.

Dream Offseason for our front 7:

Sign Clowney

Draft Kinlaw at 13

Draft Blacklock/Gallimore at 34 or 44

Our line if this happened would rival SF as the best D-Line in the league

I want this draft, along with getting Carr from the raiders.

A lot of speculation that the Raiders are going to seriously make a push to get Brady, which means Carr would likely become available.

Can’t forget we have Houston for another year. If we upgrade that dline like that it only makes Houston better.

Houston had a solid year last year on a line where he was really our primary threat as a pass rusher.  I think he's still got some in the tank, and would only benefit from having more help around him (he'd also be able to be better rested).

Guess I have to be the bearer of bad news, Clowney is on record several times saying that he wants to go to a Super Bowl contender. We are not that currently.  If we were to sign him, it’d be at an extreme cost and I just don’t see Ballard getting into a bidding war . Although, if there was one player or position where he might, this would be it

I like Clowney if we dont have to over pay for him. But Im completely obsessed with drafting Kinclaw him and Leonard come from same college and would be a wrecking creew together. If we cant get Clowney I would love to see Ballard pay for a great veteran CB to add to the secondary. Desir hasnt played like a number 1 CB in a long time, we need a #1 CB.

Kinlaw went to South Carolina. Leonard went to South Carolina State. Same state, two very different programs.

You're going to want a WR in there somewhere in the first 2 rounds. Just Clowney and Kinlaw alone would be a huge upgrade and as much as you need. Then go to work on improving the O.  WR; TE; OT. And of course........ someone who can throw the ball.

The dream for me would be Kinlaw in the first, Love and Blacklock in the second, and then Denzel Mims in the 3rd, adding a TE and Chase Claypool in the next few rounds

Can you imagine if we signed Clowney and drafted Kinlaw at 13 and traded a 2nd for Carr.  That would make our offseason truly amazing.  A total game changer.

It's so nice to hear some solutions on the board.  I would be very happy with this off season.  If we got a solid WR or TE in the mix we got a shot.

Honestly if we got clowney I’m moving him inside he’s trash as a pass rusher but he can’t be pushed around in the run game he’s very strong against guards which is a plus

He had 9.5 and 9 sacks his last 2 seasons in Houston... he's not 'trash' as our pass-rusher... he's probably better than any pass rusher we have outside Houston.  Who knows, maybe he'd be even better rushing from the inside.

Regardless, if he stayed healthy, he'd upgrade our DL.

I think Yannick Ngakoue is a much greater possibility than Clowney. Clowney will demand way too much for us to want to pay.

Neither are worth what they'll ask, by a long shot, which is why we don't participate early on.

I got one for ya.  Sign Ngakoue/Armstead and Jones.  Draft Kinlaw (unless Brown is somehow there).  That would give you a front 4 of Ngakoue/Armstead, Kinlaw, Jones, and Houston.  With Turay, Autry, and Banogu in the rotation.  That would be a heckuva front!  I know I know, it'll never happen but a brotha can dream, right?

Clooney is an excellent football player that would upgrade our team

Not perfect..... not a 20 sack guy, but he gets pressure , stops the run like a demon and you have to game plan for him

He can line up all over the line on passing downs

He alone is not the answer.... But he could be PART of an excellent defense

He’s more of a pressure guy than sack to overpay for him to be our pass rush specialist is a waste i think  but he’s excellent inside we have Turay for the edge..a Dt in the draft Houston turay and clowney inside that’s excellent push inside to allow turay and Houston to go crazy on the edge..I just see him as more benefit helping us inside granted I’d obviously move him around but to pay him big when he’s mainly a run defender isn’t cool

The plan is that the team drafted a number one corner last year in Rock.... Whether he finishes developing .... We'll see.

The more I think about it Yannick and Jones will most certainly get tagged if not outright signed.  The premier guys never make it to FA.  At the very least they would be tagged and traded in an attempt to get a return on the player.  Clowney is the only one of the three that can not be tagged.    Clowney and his agent will most certainly test the market.  This would be Ballard's window to finally get that disruptor he has been looking for on DL.  I can see Ballard paying top dollar here.  And If Carr is not available I can see him paying for Bridgewater as well.  Those players would be our two big FA gets this year.   No picks lost just money and cap space and you fill two big holes and you have all of your picks to build the team.   I can see how this happens as well.
