Benito Jones (NT) Breakdown

Recommended Posts

Benito Jones has been a favorite mid-round NT of mine and this write-up of him details why he's the most underrated DT in this draft at the moment. This is a very long breakdown with a lot of clips, but well worth the read for us draft freaks.

I was very surprised watching Benito Jones play, and I think you guys will be too. He has exceptional hands, using them to distance himself from o lineman as he sifts through stretch plays, also with his unbeatable swipe swim move. His power is tremendous, there's a play in here where he almost one arm pushes over Chris Owens. His feet and burst are beyond quick and multiple times he'll penetrate quicker than the guard can aid the center for a double team. You'll also see them in how how he can get pressures on roll outs, this happens multiple times in these clips. And his motor is unmatched by any other DT I've seen. If you would do a distance tracker of him and compare it to other DTs, I don't think it would be fair.

(He's #95, exclusively playing NT) All games are from 2019

Texas A&M vs OLE MISS

His get off speed is outrageous for a 330LB NT, his hands are exceptional too

This play is a 0 on the statsheet but he does so many great things

He rides his block on the stretch option play perfectly, winning the block the whole time, waiting to disengage and tackle when his gap is attacked Mond runs past him but he shows his determination and motor again, just like he will later against burrow. This guy really doesn't give up, you almost NEVER see this from DTs let alone a NT. This is like a love letter sent directly to a coach's heart.

Nothing on the statsheet again, but look at how greatly he impacts the game.

incredible get off, causes quick pressure, gives full effort on his pursuit of mond, forces an errant throw which turns into an interception.

best yet, at the end of the play, this bad mfer is blocking. his desire is amazing.

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/YX5e302c375fbcd

instant penetration again which amounts to nothing because dbs/lbs don't contain

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/YX5e302d2bb3a12

hand slaps center's initial engagement, then the center is at jones' mercy as he gets

tackle sleded towards the qb. pressure causes mond to check the ball down over the middle

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/YX5e302d80c8d9e

forces the rg to the ground as he earslaps him and bull rushes him

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/YX5e302ed5a3fa8

bulldozes through a doubleteam with pure power then shows his burst as he causes another pressure

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/YX5e302f7d396ff

gets push against double team, then as oline disengages, jones himself chases after mond showing his quick speed and tireless work rate

quick get off quick hands, no chance for center alone

Memphis vs Ole Miss

rg misses on the double and shows why he was needed.

bullies the rg back quickly, impacts the rbs lane

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/pH5e306028b7ea7

instant pressure against a designed roll out to the left. nts shouldn't be able to do this.

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/pH5e3060e3e9494

probably not a smart play on his part, shouldn't have went for the pressure so heavily but slowed himself to play the run.

either way, shows his burst / hands.

quick hands, penetration, and forced fumble

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/pH5e306213026b1

playing the stretch play perfectly again just like the texas a&m clip

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/pH5e30627d9d346

same thing again, dominant against stretch plays

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/pH5e3062ff79d80

let's center try to get hands on him first, swipes and swims showing amazing hand and foot speed

rip move pressure

winning a double and shedding for the tackle at the los

He also had an interception this game that I can't find. Sorry guys.

Against Alabama

effort sack against Alabama

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/jr5e306596cd42f

penetration showing the power of just one arm

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/jr5e30661291ef7

his swipe swim move

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/jr5e30665b1846d

doesn't give up, turns into another pressure

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/jr5e30670379953

dominating another stretch play, but team doesn't contain the cutback

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/jr5e3067550bbd6

arm extension, as he sifts until he's ready to shed. he's truly remarkable against stretch plays

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/jr5e3067b113e63

the very next play he shows why he shouldn't be single blocked

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/jr5e3068355c37d

for all the coaches

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/jr5e3068c8bc9ab

He had another sack where he was stacked at the los and Tua was scrambling which wasn't really worth showing.

LSU vs OLE MISS

incredible get off speed and power, bullrushes the center so quickly that his double team partner didn't have time to help

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/Ng5e3026d7c5a78

he swipes the center's initial approach and collapses the double

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/Ng5e3025ddc6a66

shouldn't have won this as the lg got easy acces to his pads, but benito with bad hand placement and starting off losing the engagement still wins with his dominating power and causes another pressure against burrow

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/Ng5e30283c9bc24

stonewalled on his swim move, but his motor is absolutely insane as he chases burrow for 20 yards or so

https://ytcropper.com/cropped/Ng5e3028d6b9225

He played two more snaps after this specific play, but afterwards he was taken out of the game for a head injury.

He was playing well this game unfortunately we didn't get to see his second half encore.

I'm really surprised at the extremely LOW grades on Benito Jones. They don't really make any sense to me. Although I don't know much about his personality outside of the games. But on the grass, this is one determined man, with incredible physical abilities he displays constantly. A team will be very happy if they get him in the 4th/5th, I think that is where scouts are grading him currently. Although I would have him MUCH MUCH higher as I feel he can play every position in a 3-4 as his handwork seems to be an amazing trait of his, and easily both dt positions in a 4-3.

What do you guys think?

he looks like a good guy to look at in rounds 5 or later.

In looking at a lot of clips posted, he seems to have a good motor and understanding of the game but it also looks like his short arms limit what he can do while engaged.  Also, I would like to learn more about the Ole Miss defensive scheme because he seemed to willing to play on the defensive side of the ball.  On several of the stretch plays posted, he did a great job moving down the line, but you want to see him do that on the offensive side of the LOS (not far, about 12-24 inches on the O side of the ball) but he didn't try to get on the offensive side.  But that could also be how he was coached to play.

I've watched Benito for several months and I would really like this pick in the mid Rounds. He is country strong. I think he does well against the Run as well as getting pressure on the QB. Somewhere between 3rd-5th Rd is where i think he'll go

Benito's first few seasons he played in a 4-3. This last season he played in a 3-4 bc of a new DC. He's versatile
