OL Regression...

Venturi said on 1075 that JB was dodging all the time on blitz pickup. The OL did a very poor job in picking it up. He did say two things which JB does not have which Andrew did:

1- A quick delivery and wind up motion

2- After TY and Ebron left, he had no one to throw too. There was no seperation, nobody to stretch the field.

If that is true than as Ballard said, "it is his fault".  There were alot of FA WR available and he just walked away from them. Instead we kept focus on guys like Deion Cain, etc...

Reich should be kicking himself in the rear for skipping McLaurin who wanted to be a Colt and focused on Paris Campbell. Paris maybe a bust because he is a injury prone Ohio State player.

Ballard is underestimating the value of experience, veteran talent. This draft will be known at the THE MOST IMPORTANT draft of his tenureship! For Reich, fine tuning his coaching staff on both sides of the ball is immediately needed.  Including himself, they underperformed. They all drank the cool aid.

Getting hurt does not make you a bust. Campbell did have flashes. It's just unfortunate Brisett couldn't get him the ball

2.... very bad take. The all 22 showed plenty of separation from other guys. Doyle alone was ranked 2nd in separation out of all WRs and TEs.

Luck had all kinds of issues with pass catchers as well. He made Rogers look like a very serviceable receiver (was 2nd in yards), had a revolving door at X (Grant/Inman/Pascal), TY missing games (2.5) and being hobbled playing (another 3-4), and was without Doyle most of the year. Luck also made a true rookie (Hines) look much much better.

Blaming Ballard, who drafted a 2nd rounder and brought in one of the better FA (Funch), is pretty silly. It's not his fault they both caught the injury bug. And after mid season, there just wasn't that much available short of behavioral issue guys and retreads.

And blaming the OL at all, is just plain disingenuous given all the facts.

When ever someone uses hyperbole to make a case, I pretty much dismiss it.  Two, the line did have a bit of an issue picking on inside blitzes, moreso than last year IMO, part of it is a weakness of the zone blocking scheme, part of it is also JBs inability to identify the blitz presnap so Kelly could make the correct line call.  For example, if JB recognizes a blitz prensap, he makes a call then Kelly makes a line call that would basically tell the guard on the blitz side to help left or right but don't commit, meaning don't turn your shoulders or vacate your zone.  Without that call then the guard will commit outside his zone and leave space open for a blitz.

Venturi's comments seem pretty objective and straight forward to me, although I have not listened to the broadcast first hand:

He's not assigning blame for JBs slow wind up and delivery.  If anybody who actually watches JB can't see this slow wind up within JBs first few games played this season, they are blind.  BTW, I've never read any mention of it, and their have been a bunch of criticisms about JB.

Since Venturi was showing how JB does not have what Andrew had in the delivery area, I'm assuming his other comments are equally unbiased.  Especially since he didn't not assign direct blame for the oline's lack of blitz pickup.  It seems like it was simply a matter of fact.  They didn't.

Lack of field stretch is a problem.  It's common knowledge.  The criticism of Ebron this year was not the lack of targets, it was that he couldn't catch what was being thrown to him early.  Effectively, he disappeared relative to what Andrew had, objectively speaking.

Since Venturi is not assigning blame or fault to anyone, I will take this long time NFL coaches word that receivers weren't getting separation.  Comments to the contrary probably involve selective study.

Your opinion Mr Negative. Can't recall you ever having a positive feeling about any Colt.

Watched every game with keen interest having  been an OL in my past. May have been a weak link in #3 OL in the NFL but better than 3 out of 4 of the right guards in the league.

Of the top 68 PFF graded guards, Glow was #62 in pass blocking.
This would = a few of you being full of beans. He did get chewed up often.
He was the 45th rated guard overall, and had a pedestrian 64.9 run blocking grade. He was below average.

Shocked that Venturi would blame the OL for lack of blitz pickup entirely. A good QB should be calling out blitz and changing play to combat the blitz pre snap. He should be getting rid of the ball ASAP and trying to hit his hot receiver. Pre snap read QBing 101.

There is always an open receiver when a team blitzes.   Brissett can't find him though.   It was his flaw in college too.   He doesn't anticipate.   JB made the line look worse than the line made JB look.

Anyone -- doesn't matter who they are, anyone! -- claiming that receiver weren't getting separation is absolutely, 100% wrong.
