The remaining two games

  1. 1. What is your preference?

    • Lose out and improve draft position
    • Win every game we can and try to build on something for next year
    • Regardless of Ws or Ls, give the young guys snaps to evaluate them in game situations
    • It sucks being out of the playoffs and I just don't care

Which would be good, since all would be consistent with positional value at 13.  Of course, so would QB, if he's good enough.

Please no more Gs, Cs, FSs, or TEs, or RBs

just throwing it out there with 4QB that could be gone in the first 12picks if Epenesa is on the board would you pass over him for a WR?

Don't know who he is.  I haven't looked at many college players outside of QB and s few DTs.

i could have framed it better i know some posters have said they don't want EDGE we need more of a IDL/3Tech but if an elite edge rusher is there do we pass on them for a WR or RB if we don't go QB in round one. Since we do have Kemoko/Ben/Justin/Jabal/Tyquan there currently.

I think pure EDGEs are too one dimensional and get gassed to fast, so I think if it as being a rotational position anymore.  Also, with three step drops and quick releases, it takes too long to run around the OT before the QB throws the ball.  Direct 3Tech pressure seems like the way to go, especially with the younger guys on our roster.

I like the guy from Auburn, but he'll probably be gone.

I probably won't get too involved in the pre draft stuff until March.

I'm just tired of our GMs buying into this "traits" and "characteristics" talk like they're drafting some sort of gene pool and creating a football player out of it.  And their analytics guys aren't as smart as they think, IMO.

I hope we draft college players with a good productive history.  Nelson, Leonard (albeit small school) and Smith all were productive.  I beleive Smith had the most career starts of any Olineman in the SEC actively playing at the time he was drafted.  Guys like Hooker and Dorsett were the "high traits" players that the gene-pool eugenics guys think they can turn into football players.

I hope we don't look at QBs that way.

Ok all, where do we sit at currently with our draft spot. We surely made a little headway with a few of the games played today.

13th IIRC, which is a lot better than 16+.

Would have been 10th had we tanked last week too.

But we're fine. We can trade up to 4th giving away or 13th and 34th if we wanted to make a deal with the Giants.

He won't retire.

He's contract dancing.

That’s what I think too. He wants the colts to sweat and maybe panic a little therefore it gets him more $$$ and I don’t blame him. At the beginning of the season I didn’t think he was going to warrant a big salary but I can see him making top 5-7 tackle money now if not better. We shall see

He's playing the passive aggressive 101 game. I might retire, it's not about the money....

But hey, I can't turn down XXX

I got some ocean front property in AZ for you.

Well ballard is going to pay him his worth. I don’t think ballard is going to low ball him. So I don’t think that is the issue.

    • The closer we are getting to the draft the more I see Turner being projected outside the top 10. Still, Latu is a gamble - he was medically retired after his sophomore season and told he would never play football again due to a neck injury, Transferred to UCLA and was eventually cleared. He just seems like the type of player who has the goods, but will fall in the draft due to health concerns.
    • There's a lot of analysis to be done here, IMO. I don't know all the answers, but some questions that should be addressed are what's the difference between the success rate of a first round pick and that of a second/third round pick, historically? How do you value that difference? I think I've seen stats that say first rounders are starters at a higher rate than other rounds, but is that influenced by the bias of the team that drafted the player in the first round? (Probably.) It's probably fair to say that the players taken in the first round are more likely to be difference makers than the players taken later, but I think there are position groups where the difference is negligible, and I think WR is one of them.   And then, if you get into a climate where everyone is selling in the first round, then the value probably flips at some point.    Also, I don't necessarily think of the draft as a crap shoot. Yes, it's arbitrary, but I think some front offices are good at drafting, and some are bad at drafting; but the difference isn't as wide as general perception would indicate. And there are lots of dependent variables -- coaching, health, etc. -- that influence the outcome of each pick.    I do think more picks is the way to go to maximize value. But to build the best roster? That's a different arm of the discussion. Like you said later on, we've been trading down, and we don't have a great roster.    You also make a good point about the rookie contract vs trading for an established player, and that's not to be ignored. But my point is that if you're going to base your appetite for risk on your level of conviction in the player, I'd rather take the big swing on the established player than on a draft prospect, despite the difference in contract status. The ideal mix is to target a second or third year WR so you can at least get some of the rookie contract. Ballard reportedly asked for Jaylen Waddle and Christian Watson last year.
    • I really don’t see that type of Defensive player in this draft. But there’s always surprises. But I agree, we’ve got to go offensive fire power this year. At least in the first.
    • If they want to beat the Texans they will
    • I don’t think we’ll address the DL at all in rounds 1-4. I think we’re happy with who we have currently and will give the new DL coach a chance to see what he thinks over the next season.
