Why are all the top drafted QB's busts?

Every situation is different.  Other top drafted QBs include Mahomes, Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Deshaun Watson, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson.  You're only looking at the busts, but that doesn't mean every top QB is a bust.  Many different reasons:

Mayfield - bad coaching, no protection

Mariota - overrated coming out of college, bad coaching

Winston - simply not that good, turnover machine

Darnold - was actually playing well toward the end of last year, but the current roster and coaching staff are horrible

Rosen - I think he has some talent (not franchise QB level by any means), but he's been stuck in two awful situations with tanking teams

Trubisky - overrated coming out of college, not that good

One interesting thing to note is that all the good QBs I mentioned have very good coaches with them, while a lot of the bad QBs you listed have bad coaches, so perhaps that's a big factor.

1. These guys arent exactly set up for success when they come in to the league. They are almost always drafted to bad teams with a myriad of issues. New coaches are in place a lot of the time as well, and good coaches dont come available very often, so its typically a team either trying someone new with little experience, or putting a retread in place who is average.

2. It is the hardest evaluation in all of sports. Not only are they usually being asked to do way more than they did in college, there are no lopsided match ups in the NFL, like in the NCAA. The offenses are different, but the biggest difference lies in the defenses they face. They are much more exotic, and much harder to read and prepare for.

There are a lot of success stories who would've failed if they were drafted into a different situation, and there are also some failures who would've succeeded had they been fortunate enough to be drafted into a different organization.

Baker Mayfield, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Mitch Trubisky, and a few names I'm forgetting. Is it bad coaching, bad scouting, or something else? Just find it interesting that these guys all suck.

some of it is hype/ over reaching. Some of it is personality. some of it is injuries. Some of it is intelligence and ability to learn/change to maximize one's talents.   Part of it is NFL coaches and not being able to develop talent.

Lastly, a LARGE part of it is instant gratification. Fans and teams want instant superstar QBs and give them little time to develop.  The days of an Aaron Rodgers sitting behind say Farve, while being developed are long gone.
