Why cant the texans beat the colts (colts fan's perspective)

Recommended Posts

I have a theory to why the texans are having issues beating the colts and texan fans, you can correct me if im wrong. The texans for the first time in their franchise have a legit superstar QB, but the problem of having a superstar QB is mentally they think they need to make every play for their team to win which causes them to do more then whats needed for example throwing a pass off balance up in the air for an easy pick. Now im not blaming Watson. I think hes amazing. I blame Bill O'Brien and his inability to put the game on anyone else's shoulders besides Watson. Four trips inside the 10 and I might have saw one run that being the end around by coutee. Thats ridicious especially knowing the o-line, while has improved from last year, was still getting Watson killed. I counted atleast 2 sacks that were avoided because Watson being Watson. You cant win games being a one player team. We learned that the hard way mutiple times

I think the Colts coaching staff is a few notches above Houston.  You can tell Obrien has great respect for Frank Reich.  I believe he said so much after one of the contest last year.

personally, I think it's because they think they have a superstar Qb and play accordingly but they don't and so they put him in situations where he has to be a superstar to win and he cannot do that often enough.

Although I will admit Watson seems improved this year over last year but I still think he is just a good QB who can extend plays but looks pretty lost in the pocket when his first ready is not open.

Physically, I think Watson is as athletic as they come for a QB.  However, I agree with you -- he relies too much on extending plays/scrambling.  This is a recipe for disaster in the NFL for longevity of QBs.  Many teams are able to adjust after seeing enough film on these types of QBs.  It's also difficult for these QBs to stay healthy over a full career.

We also have some guy named TY.

The Texans just aren’t a complete team yet. BOB is an average coach that runs the team, he’s not necessarily good at doing either job. They’re also injured at key areas. They have never been good enough to beat us.

Now, I have no idea why we can’t beat the damn Chargers.

Well if you went over to the Texans forums, they'd say Bill O'Brien and the refs made the Colts win.

I definitely think OB is a main culprit, but they also shoot themselves in the foot way too much, also with penalties.

or the steelers, or the patriots.  Honestly, I think it gets into the player's heads and they try to do things they normally dont and it throws off the game.  We saw this with Peyton a bunch, Luck a bunch etc.

They need new blood down there their defense is decent but if they don't want Watson to be the next version of an Andrew luck style early retirement they better build him a better o-line same with Mahomes in KC.

Texans just need some bodies back there at this point.  They are pretty banged up right now.

I dont think there is any magic behind it, there are just situations where teams cannot beat other teams regardless of the situation. As was pointed out earlier, we have this problem with the Steelers. We also have it with the Patriots...and that's not just the Tom Brady iteration, when we were in the AFC east we couldnt beat them. Even when they went 2-14 in 1992, take a guess who one of those wins was against(and Colts were 9-7 that year).

Consequently, we have great records against the Texans, the Jets(yeah, I know they typically aren't great)...we're also 15-2 all time against the Falcons.

This past go-round it was because the best placekicker in NFL history couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Great opening line in the Houston Chronicle the morning after. It reads as follows,"The Colts are on top of the AFC South during the same season that Andrew Luck shocked the NFL by retiring."

Watching the sports channels most of the day after Sunday's win it appears unanimous #7 is going places. I did not hear one doubter all day.

Why? From what I heard he's been pretty bad. Are you just reading into the name and draft pedigree?

No GM and O'Brien is a terrible coach.  So many stupid penalties.  They even had trouble lining up correctly.  Their secondary is a mess and they desperately traded for Conley.  Thank goodness we have Reich.  They need a coaching change.

I don't care anything about that.  I trust our staff could straighten his game out, he's got tons of talent.  It's not always about the numbers.

Literally the EXACT same spiel was said about Collins.... I imagine you were a strong advocate for him too?

Some players just aren't good despite their talent.

The Colts are to the Texans what the Pats used to be to the Manning Colts. Texan fans hate the Colts with a passion. I never wear any of my Colts shirts when they play here in Houston.

It always feels good to beat the Texans, but for it not to have to be the TY show in order to do it feels even better.

Just shows how this coaching staff is adjusting to each team we play. I LOVE IT.

Except that they don't have a superstar qb.

    • My God, you're right...   It's a conspiracy, man.   If Reich know tha hez company loyal to stand by the nonsense and the obvimously lack of talent an holes on diz roster then then he knows that if he shows JB can't reaf his progrezions den the opposing teams will have the advantage! Reich try to tank for a top 10 pick! We all know it!   BACK TO THE PILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!               *I lost today's internal battle, because of my brother to the north... A certain south park song I am dieing to use as justification
    • If VM is saying it, it's likely because he's parroting what management is saying. Not saying it's not true, or true, just saying there's always a narrative.
    • The lack of light front carries is either play calling, or JB's choice. Light front carries may also be down simply because of down and distance when facing light fronts. I'm guessing this goes at least partly to JB's struggles with reading Ds.   And using "stacked box" stats are very imperfect. It's not always about what how many are in the box, it's what those guys do when the ball is snapped. The stacked box stat typically only measures 8+ defenders in the box at the time of snap. What it doesn't tell you is what the front seven does. Do the LBs play the run or go into coverage is the more accurate measurement, along with how much nickel and dime coverage you see.    If I were a D vs JB, I'd go standard package (no nickel/dime) most of the time, and have the LBs play run or shallow crossing, which is what we are generally seeing. 4 DBs on standard downs is sufficient vs our current O.  I'm going to say Reich and JB are making it more predictable. If the passing game is more successful, and the play calling isn't as conservative, we're not having this problem at all. Like I said in a previous post, very few team have RB1s that are dynamic in both running and passing. And honestly that's not Reich's O. Mack is 12 of 14 (yes only 14), so he's been very reliable. It's more lack of targets and play calling if anything.  He is an APB. An APB does not run it between the tackles often, and that's what Reich typically calls for him... An APB is a change of pace back that is usually more edge, sweep, receiving,  and gimmicky. I'd say his "average" play, is a product of use type. White rushing is 32 attempts for 104 yards, and a 3.3 average. Hines is 22 for 66 and 3.0 with mostly between the T rushes. Last year with Luck, Hines was 85/315 and 3.7 rushing.... do you see the difference....  Yes it's rare to have a stud #1 RB that excels in both. I think we are under utilizing Mack in the passing game, and I think Hines is hampered by both rush play calling, and by JB in the passing game. That's what they numbers suggest anyway.
    • Humility is on the path to enlightenment...   Some-ish like that...   I try and remind myself daily lol
    • Ha, ha, ha.....whatever psyche job Reich wants to use. Brissett must be mentally fragile.
