Leonard's Concussion / Athletic Article

Sounds like Leonard's concussion was pretty serious, not that it wasn't apparent by sitting out for a few weeks, but the whole "was questioning his football future" is pretty sobering.

I don't have a sub to the Athletic but a fellow Colts fan on reddit said this about it:

Quote

According to Holder’s most recent Athletic Article (which I will not post but say that the subscription is worth jt), Leonard’s concussion had severe symptoms and he was worried if he’d ever be the same. Leonard said he had constant headaches for 2-3 weeks and the Colts told him to stay away from the facility for 2 weeks after it happened (other than to go thru concussion tests). Leonard believes the play occurred in the first quarter of the Titans game when tackling Derrick Henry. He said that he felt something but thought it was just the heat. Now he says he feels good and should play this weekend.

I have a subscription and read it. It was basically different then the one he had in college. That was the main reason he was questioning whether he could play again. He then talked to others who had concussions and realized what he was experiencing a lot others had as well. That then eased his mind. It’s a good story. If you download the APP you can get so many articles for free a month. It’s worth the subscription though. Great stories.

Oh, that's interesting.

And yeah, I need to just sub to the Athletic. Especially now that they have Keefer too.

Keefer and holder have a podcast twice a week if you like to listen to podcasts. The early week one is on itunes and the second one is a subscriber only. If you look around you can find a 50% off for the first year. It’s actually pretty cheap even at full price with as much content is there. You can read it all. Even stories on other teams. What’s nice is stories are posted everyday. It’s not like a bi weekly or anything. I love the personal stories.

Back in 2011 I flipped my car 5 times. Walked away with just a concussion thank God. Didn’t eat for a few days as I couldn’t stomach food. That’s just my personal experience. I feel for the guy and can relate. Hopefully he isn’t coming back too soon. He’ll have those feels in the back of his mind for sometime.

When did he get the concussion?

I kept saying to my brother, especially in game 2 that he looked freaking lost out there.  Apparently he was.

Yep it was game two. He said he believes it happened in the 1st quarter on a collision with Henry. It was 94 degrees that day so he thought it was from the heat so never said anything.

That's my opion.  Bobby was great in the KC game especially in coverage.   Leonard can't cover at that level.

bobby is slim more like a safety in the box frame unlike Leonard nonetheless Leonard blitz and attacks the ball great just don’t have him playing Zone

I would have preferred to read the full article on Leonard, but I don't fall for that free trial nonsense because online outlets count on people forgetting about the trial period & then they rope you into a full membership. No thank you. No sports articles are worthy of membership fees to me or maybe I'm just frugal to a fault.

Anyway, I hope Darius is okay. Lingering symptoms over a prolonged period can indeed be very scary & quite mentally draining indeed, especially when one concussion usually increases the likelihood of others down the road. Hang in there man.

This makes me nervous. But I do remember Luke Kuechley having a horrible run with concussion, and after a long time out returning to his old self the last 2 years.

Yeah, I remember when Luke went through that stretch as well NZ1; especially that 1 game where he was literally crying on the field. LBs work their tails off to reach the league & play at an elite level & just because their brain bounced off their skull one too many times, they begin to wonder: Is this the beginning of the end? It sucks & I feel horrible for any defensive guying going thru this ordeal.

I'm still amazed that safety John Lynch claims he's never had a concussion either. I loved watching him collide with a ball carrier on the field. 1 of my favorites, who needs to go into the HOF like yesterday already, but I digress...

I figured as much. Plus, even now, LBs don't wanna report being dinged up because they are so afraid of losing their spot in the lineup to the next man up.

I laugh every time some on air commentator boats about player safety & the blue concussion tent. The Commissioner & the owners don't care about player safety period--They just wanna avoid another billion dollar settlement. It's all about the bottom line: Their pocket book not player wellbeing. This is the same league that mandates all former players get a lawyer in order to receive the medical benefits & surgeries after football they are entitled to. This always ticks me off.

Instead, create a NFL database where you call a toll free number, they ask you for a pin # from a packet you get when you exit the league, & the player in question gets routed to the medical personnel who can alleviate their aches, pains, & suffering...Both psychological & physical. End Rant. The league can afford this easily.

This is pretty concerning to me. You have a star linebacker questioning retirement when you've already had your franchise player retire. Sounds to me like our training staff isn't doing the best job of getting these players where they need to be health wise and reassuring them. I know that concussions aren't your typical rehab, but it doesn't sound like our training staff was doing all it could to make sure he was getting healthy. Just my two cents.

Hmmmm....last I heard Leonard lost weight this year.  He was around 215 and all it amounted to was him  getting blown up in the run game and still not being able to cover .  I just think he is really over rated based on his late season play last year and so far this year

Sir, "some" national people (Colin Cowherd) even stated that Darius Leonard might be the best LB in the league. I get that the rooks played lights out against KC and perhaps other prior games. But Leonard is an ALL PRO. APs dont grow on trees. Humbly speaking. I don't even think Andrew Luck made the ALL PRO team last year.

Leonard  said the media twisted his words. He never contemplated  retirement. He was thinking  about his family and if he would recover.

He forced  a fumble  in the chiefs game in the playoffs  and we gave it right back to them. Ej speed  and okereke could be good, but I wouldn't  say they are better  than Leonard  yet. They haven't  even had the same type of impact as he did last year. If they did we'd be a top 5 defense.

Well if Colin Cohwerd said it, it must b true because Colin scouted....coached and/or played football at an elite level?!?!?!?

I am very concerned as well, but the Colts won't put him out there if he is hurting our defense. I thought Vander-Esch was a beast at first too and he has tapered off a bit, although he has 31 solo & 50 tackles (combined)  (.5 sacks).  Most importantly however, i hope he (Leonard) regains 100% brain health.

Darius Leonard was an All-Pro his rookie year. Okereke will have a hard time matching that.

Concussions are bad news. I had a couple in HS football and another in a bike accident in college. My first one in HS, they gave me some smelling salts, patted me on the back and sent me home. I apparently rode my bike home. I became aware of my surroundings about two hours after I got home. No idea how I got there. No memory of anything after the collision. My third one, in college, was the worst. Same memory loss; but it impacted my brain for a good 6 months or so. At least today there is an awareness of how to deal with concussions. But its scary stuff; football is a concussion waiting to happen for everyone on the field.

Speed and Okereke have more upside than Leonard? Wow, that's a major stretch. I think both of these rookies have genuine promise, but Leonard had a special season last year that neither of these guys are likely to replicate. Leonard is an all Pro LB and earned it.

Now, you want to talk about Willis already being better than Geathers? That's one where we could find common ground.

He never questioned whether he should retire. He actually went off on twitter last night at bleacher report even suggesting that. It was because it scared him because it was different then the other one he had in college. Stephen holder never used the words retirement. Bleacher report took words and made a clickbate title that wasn’t true.

Luck had his own doctors & specialists outside of the organization that he worked with, & the NFL has a very strict protocol for concussions that players must go through until they're symptom free. I get that it's hip to throw the Colts trainers under the bus, but it doesn't seem like either of these 2 incidents have anything to do with the medical staff in Indy.

Ummm.m.....Eberflus said  Bobby will still see some time at linebacker this week even with Walker and Leonard healthy.  Will b interesting to c when and who he subs for. Also Speed to get more playing time at SAM.  Mayb I wasn't to far off bout Bobby and Speed's upside??  Interesting

Most likely he will take snaps from walker. Walker is great on run defense and not as good in pass coverage. Okereke did well last week in pass coverage. If he goes in for Lenard that will be because he missed three games. He typically plays every snap.

Bleacher Report put out a pretty clickbait-y article that was headlined something like "Leonard contemplated retirement." I think this is what his tweet was in reference too.

I made a prediction at beginning the of season that Speed and Bobby would eventually b our starting lbs.  Bold prediction but just a gut feeling

Concussions suck. Had a couple back when I was an amateur boxer, both times ring Doc checked me and told my family to just make sure I was breathing throughout the night and that I got up in the morning, lol.

    • KG really wasn’t near 100% until the Jax game either. He looks close to 100% now.    Week 1 Vs the Bears the Lions defense lost 3 CB’s. Two of them starters. They were dominating CHI before that and CHI was able to rally back as a result. DET still almost won the game but Swift dropped the game winner in the end zone. The Lions defense was really banged up vs GB, ARZ and NO. They are finally getting healthy. The Lions are still down two CB’s. Trufant and Coleman won’t play this week and haven’t played since week one.    I think the Swift vs Taylor matchup will be a fun one to watch.  I hope they both get the majority of the carries.
    • I view him as mediocre.  Might not be fair to him but that's my take.  You can win with mediocre if you have a talented roster but there's a cap on your ceiling.   Good chance that Ballard knows this and will make a change if things don't go the way he wants in the playoffs.
    • If you look at how the trend is heading nowadays it seems like GM has become a complementary role to the Head Coach.  Where they basically work hand in hand with the coach or maybe even for them in scouting the class and shaping their board.  But I think the old model, the classic GM at the top ensuring you have that year to year consistency (and maybe even setting the course on what type of team he wants) has its advantages.   Ballard's a good GM.  Having that in place is really important for your long term health of the franchise.  So I think from that perspective the franchise is immediately better off than half to two-thirds of the rest of the league.   I think what he's missing is the right coach.  He needs someone more current, more creative.  Not necessarily the trendy offensive mind but a head coach who is young and gives you a tactical advantage on one side of the ball and has a chance to grow into the total package.  There's some good options out there, lot of young coordinators filtering in to the league now, but Ballard can also look at college.   Bottom line is I think we're in good hands at the top.  The roster is strong.  Lot of positives just find the right guy to tie it all together.
    • Not often but it can happen.  Bears D are the reason they won in 85
    • Rodgers has several years left  Rivers will probably be here 1 more tops
