Week 4 impressions: Brissett

Recommended Posts

Brissett is what he has always been and always will be.  Doesn't make many mistakes, but doesn't make very many big plays.  Dink and dunk.  Will do well if he has a great all around team around him, but I wouldn't count on him winning many games if it is on his shoulders.  I don't think the Colts can ever win a title with him at QB.  We can keep drinking the Kool-Aid about great he is because that is wishful thinking, but he is pretty limited in upside.

I saw nothing wrong with Brissett's game today with the exception of the misread pick 6.

Having said that, I saw Cain drop a first down, I saw Rogers drop a first down and I saw Ebron drop 3 first downs AND a catchable down the field ball.

All of those drops are obviously drive killers and momentum changers.

He is the same guy we saw last week, no need to panic about him.

I agree way too many drops. But let me ask this. If a dropped pass is a drive killer, what about simply a bad pass? Is that also a drive killer. Is a missed open man or bad read a drive killer? If so, both the WRs/TEs and JB had plenty of drive killers. People always see drops. They don't always see the open guy that never gets looked at. And they also don't flip out on simply a bad pass.

It was just a bad game all around. Almost every single Colt today needs to jump under the bus, and let it roll over them, back up, and roll over again.

You think he played a good first half? You think he played a good 3rd quarter? What about when the game was on the line? Seriously, what about today did you think he did well? He had like 50% completion.

He didn’t get get a lot of help, I already admitted that, but he isn’t above reproach.

You score 24 points you should win 80% of your games. He did that. Our defense needs to step up and hold these teams when it is 3rd and 13 lmao . Every time it is 3rd and long we give up a 1st down, it happened last week too.

How so?  Very intelligent,  big arm,  very elusive in the pocket.   He has a lot to learn,   but his upside isn't limited

Oh I agree about the D, for sure. I was just pointing out that Jacobi has his own problems today too.

I didn't even read through the posts (no need) but the pick 6 is not why we lost. Our defense was garbage. Let the JB haters have fun all week lmao . Also yeah lets bring in Chad Kelly lmao or he isn't Andrew Luck, post it haha . I already know without reading any posts what is being said.

Our defense is why we lost, plain and simple. Going down 14-0 to Carr and the Oakland offense to guys I have never heard of just sucks. Our defense is bad, I am hoping it is because Leonard is out.

If this defense is this bad because Leonard was out, we are in serious trouble.

I am not saying Leonard is Ray Lewis but take Ray off the Ravens they probably have 0 SB wins. 1 player can make a difference. Remember 2006? Bob Sanders came back and were the 85 Bears against the run, without him we sucked.

Bob was that type of guy that year.

While the premise isn't perfect, if we accept it..... 10 teams actually average more than 24, so really about 69% :goodluck:.

Does he have to throw it as hard as he can every time? Good lord man, take something off some of those passes. The guys have their man beaten and he still rifles it in there. No wonder they drop everything.

Yeah, he's got one pass...the high hard one.

I think it is fair to say Leonard makes a difference. Maybe not on the level as the guys I named but still an impact.

Yeah, maybe Ballard should sell the farm for a high QB pick next draft.

69% is still high and scoring 24 every game will still get you to 10-6 in almost all cases.

We got outplayed and out coached today.
Surprised i guess that Cain is such a no show. Campbell isn't there yet either that is for sure.
And yes Brissett was off target and his throws were late getting there.
Very good job by Oakland against our o-line, and against our passing game.
Glad to see Speed out there. We need him in lots of situations.
  Walker meh

I was with you till Walker (meh),, I thought he had another good game... he missed a few, but saved several more

I don't think anyone has said Brissett is great lmao . There is not 1 person in here that says he is better than Andrew Luck either. Why don't people get off their kool-aid drinking saying he sucks or Chad Kelly is better. See I can turn the tables that easily . We would be 0-4 with Kelly IMO, in both games we won, JB made clutch drives and key throws.

Maybe. 3 teams currently that are averaging 24 or more, are 2-2 :-).

Just funning with you. I agree. But I'd also say, that you should average more than 24 at home vs a sub par team, because to maintain that average of 24 (and potential 10-6 record), you know you likely will score less on the road, or vs better opponents.

We gave up 31 at home though or ok technically 24 because of the pick 6. So maybe 25 would've done it without the pick sad homer simpson GIF

One thing I will say is that I continue to have very little confidence when this team gets down early.

That's mostly due to our offensive philosophy though. Our drives take a lot of time off the clock with so much running and short passes, which is great with a lead, but not so great when it's a race against the clock. It's disheartening when a team scores quickly against us and you know it'll take as a lot longer to answer back. Even more disheartening when those long offensive drives stall out like they did those 2 consecutive drives in the 1st half. I realize that our defense isn't quite reliable enough to take too many risks on offense though.

Jacoby  is not going to be the quarterback believe this team to the Super Bowl. He is a stopgap the next year or so. I'm not sure why so many have claimed him as the franchise quarterback but like I said we're playing with house money right now

I'm not sure it's that. We had Hooker out as well, and both of their replacements are rookies. I like Okereke and Willis, but not as starting Mike linebacker and FS right now... I especially don't like Walker at Will linebacker trying to replace Leonard in coverage... Why he's on the field in obvious passing downs is BEYOND my understanding.

We have no pass rush right now. And that's a problem. We can't even foster up pass rush with various stunting linebackers because our coverage is so soft.

This is true. And something I haven't seen discussed much outside of him being injured late in the game, is Mack in those situations. He's only good for pass blocking on passing downs, which is why we moved the ball so well late with Hines and Wilkins in there. They provide an option out of the backfield. Mack just doesn't, and it's a problem for him to be the main back. I can't imagine we don't look to the draft for another playmaker next year, seeing the health issues we have with Mack and anyone else not named Wilkins/Hines. Those boys are here to stay, we need a serious all purpose power back to fill in the gap on this depth chart.

Our biggest need has to be DL in the draft and FA.  Autry and Hunt don't have enough sand in their pants to occupy the big uglies and keep them off our linebackers.  Autry and Hunt would be better served playing at the 5T.  All we really have is Grover and he isn't very big either.  Ray Lewis was good because he always had Goose and a few other monsters demanding double teams allowing him to flow to the ball.  Having few big athletic defensive linemen would make everything better.  Our speedy linebackers would thrive.  I just don't know if the draft is very deep with defensive linemen that would be difference makers at the next level that can play the 3T or 1T.  Move Hunt and Autry to play the 5T on obvious running downs.  At least we have the trenches in pretty good shape on the offensive side of the ball.  Ballard seems to be building the defensive side from the back to the front.  We have pretty decent young secondary and linebacking corp, and then Autry and Hunt up trying to stop the run, meh.

Defense was worse than trash today.

Manning would've had a hard time keeping the game close.

Yes they were but this thread isn’t about the defense and it doesn’t change that the Brissett was not good today either.

Yeah but he gets no credit from some for a 3td day man.

He's gotta throw 5 for an 'atta boy'??

One good thing to say for Brissett; we're lucky he (and the pass playcalling) has been good in the red zone. Because for as good as our run game has been, it seems to lose all effectiveness when we get closer to the goal line.

I'll say it again -- 250+ yards, 3TD, 1 pick.

You can talk about the bad timing on the pick 6 (is there ever a GOOD time for a pick 6?) but the overall numbers are what they are.  Just like they were what they were in the first 2 weeks when people harped on his low yardage numbers.

You can't go "but mah numbers" in the first 2 weeks and then turn around and ignore them when it's convenient

Brissett wasn't anywhere near our worst problem today.

I am more disappointed in Reichs play calling today. He used no imagination which was needed with Hilton out. What about some jet sweeps or something when the offense is struggling.

And he doesn't get credit for being durable. Every week we see teams putting in their backups...

The word coming into this year was:

a. Brissett has a lot of balls batted down. The Raiders sure did that.

b. Brissett locks onto a receiver. Check. He still does.

c. Brissett throws mostly fastballs. Outside of some goal line flips, check. But the Colts receivers go above and beyond in aiding Brissett's mediocrity with their numerous drops. It reached ridiculousness in the Oakland game.

d. Brissett will have untimely turnovers. In the Oakland game...check.

For all the leadership Brissett and Reich are supposed to have, it must have been behind closed doors in the locker room because you sure didn't see any fire/"we need to do better" emotion on the sideline in the Oakland game.

a.   But not nearly as many as Luck. ..... Did you watch the KC playoff game?

b.  Like Manning did in the Super Bowl and the pick six gave NO the win.

c. Brissett has a high completion rate. Did you ever watch Manning fire a laser into Marvin Harrison's bread basket so fast that you couldn't even see the ball in real time?

d. none of Luck's turnovers were untimely. His 83 INT's were actually at a perfect time.

I pin the loss on the plethora of drops, the campbell turnover, the defense that continues to not be able to get off the field. I had few issues with Brissett today. Yeah there were rookies out there on offense but these were some of our Vets who were dropping these footballs.  Had those catches have been hauled in we'd proabably be talking about something else. I thought Ebron was really poor today.

We lost because we got dominated in the trenches on both sides of the ball. There won’t be any big q highlights after this game.
