Is Chad Kelly now a trade asset? (merge)

If he was so amazing,   the colts wouldn't have him.

lol, as if that has anything to do with his actual talent as opposed to his off the field issues.

honest to god, if you think Brissett would rack up nearly 800 yards and 91 points in two games against Nick Saban defenses*, I’ve got a bridge for you to buy. Brissett didn’t even put up 200 yards a game against teams like Old Dominion or Troy.

Kelly is much, much more talented of a QB than Brissett. He was literally the most accurate QB that Sports Science ever tested. That includes Brees, Mahomes, Big Ben, Mayfield. Polian said he was the most talented QB of his entire draft class.

”Swag” is just an untrustworthy dope. That’s why no one wanted him.

*the only other QB to EVER have over 750 yards in 2 games against Saban was Drew Brees

I don't care what he did in college.   If his talent was so amazing he would have been scooped up despite his nonsense.   Much like Cam Newton.   He had huge baggage,   was still drafted high.    Elway cut him when he could have just let him ride out the suspension.   Front offices know he isn't worth the effort

To anyone that suggested this

Why would any team trade their kicker!?????

then they have to go find another kicker!!!!

there aren’t many out there!!!!!

its not like teams carry 2 field goal kickers that would be worth anything.   Sure they have punters that could kick.  Then they would need a punter

no logic to this at all

Only Miami should.  They won’t be using one this year.  They can’t make it past the 50.

Who got more value as a trade, hoyer's or kelly?

I was thinking the same. The question in my mind is which QB do you keep and which do you try to move. To me you keep Kelly for the upside and try and move Hoyer.

I doubt that is the course we take though; I suspect we either keep both or move Kelly.

I'm reading a Minkeh deal is close, probably tomorrow.  Maybe he goes there as part of a package.  Their QB situation is a mess as well.  We can only hope.  Forget that he has been traded to the Steelers for a 1st. rd. pick. per rap sheet.

Wow.  That’s a lot to give up considering the stealers could end up with a top 10 pick.

Given that list of injured QBs going into week 3 of the season, I say we need to KEEP Kelly.  JB could go down any time with an injury, and we need a backup QB ready, which is Hoyer, for now.  But, we need 3 QBs available, in my opinion.  Doubt Kelly would get us much at this point.

They're not worried about a 3rd QB.

They will just bring back Phillip Walker... if need be.

It would be silly to let CK go given our current rank in total O, as well as JBs current stats.

If we were top 10 in total O, and JB was top 10 in yards or QBR, then I wouldn't care, but....

Currently we're sitting at 21st in total O, and near the bottom (29th) in passing yards. JB is 17th in QBR and 28th in total passing yards. That's just not good.

And it would be worse if Hoyer were to play....

Unless someone was desperate enough to give us a 1st rounder and we're happy to tank, we keep him.

I could see a lot of teams grabbing him after his preseason performance.

Wouldn't be shocked if Belichick even kicked the tires.

You didn’t see the great preseason that Stidham had for the Pats?  He’s why Hoyer was released.  Wherever Kelly goes, he would be going to a system without knowing it.  Your QB situation would have to be dire to give up a roster spot for Kelly and expect him to play soon. I only see the Jets & maybe the Steelers being in those dire of straits.  Are there other teams that view him as their guaranteed number 2 regardless of hm knowing their system?  Maybe Gruden & the Raiders? He loves QB’s.

The Pats have carried 3 on several occasions. A matter of fact, they were carrying 3 when they traded JB to us. The Pats are also carrying 7 WRs right now, so they could easily drop 1 WR and pick up a QB.

JB is ninth in QBR. He is also in the top tier for Td. Yes we need more yards. Reich knows that. To say his stats are bad is ridiculous.

I don't see him as a trade asset.

Bronco's let him go after his run in with the law and no one picked him up, not even for their practice squad.

Seems like we picked him up in part as a favor to Jim Kelly.  Not much has changed since that time.

With no one claiming him off waivers or picking him up as a free agent I don't we're going to convince a team to part with a draft pick for him.

Yeah that's straight up wrong. In that time, he's stayed out of trouble, teams have suffered serious downturns in their fortune at the position, and Kelly (to his credit) has balled out when given the chance albeit in preseason, at worst he's proven he's better than the Colts QB3 (Walker).

That's quite a bit that's changed. Much like you and many others, I thought he was brought in as a favor to Jim Kelly and he probably was, but the dude's taken his chance with both hands. He has value even if it's as QB2 for someone.

He’s not gonna have much trade value, he’s had trouble with the law dating back to his high school years that haven’t gone away.

Its only a matter of time of time before he gets in trouble again.

Trouble with the law going back to high school? He’s been arrested twice. Once for getting in a bar fight when he was 21 and then the walking into the wrong home crap in Denver.

Neither of which were felonious such as things done by Cam Newton or Jameis Winston (*cough*FSUcoverup*cough*)

damn be careful dude you're gonna upset the fan club with talk like this!!

I'm not a sunshine pumper. I'm also not giving up on JB yet. He executed very well game 1, but the game plan was very "game manager" like, and our rushing game carried us. In game two, he looked bad with the turnovers and staring down WRs, and our rushing game wasn't there like it was in game 1.

Right now I'm back to "I don't know what to think" about him. I need a larger sample size before I form a strong opinion.

He was suspended in HS for 7 games (2008), kicked off his HS team (2009), kicked off his college team and escorted from the Clemson stadium by police (2014), disinvited from the 2017 NFL combine, and kicked off his NFL team (2018).

He stated "I'm going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place”

And yes, arrested twice. Over a span of 10 years he has shown a pattern of poor choices that some folks want to blissfully ignore because he hasn't been arrested in the past 3 months. Ridiculous!

He's an athletic phenom who's also a borderline sociopath. He is not a fit in this recently revamped Colts locker room.

The AK47 comment has been debunked as the bouncer reportedly made it up

But.....  you are correct for concern on the other points that you mentioned as well as the the additional bonehead things that he did that you didnt mention

The kid at least HAS been an arrogant jerk.

Denver doesnt have their QB situation figured out..... they let him walk

There was more to the "asleeep on someone elses couch" story

If a guy was THE MAN.... you take the lumps and let him stay on the team

I'm torn on Chad Kelly

The guy clearly is talented. The guy SEEMS to have everything needed to be a top QB.

The guy would APPEAR to have better QB attributes than JB

What some old dude in Texas (ME) clacking away at his keyboard CANT see, is what the guy is like on a day to day basis

Is he a jerk today?

A jerk can ruin a locker room, especially at the QB position. The "face" of the organization.

The Colts are bringing in very high quality character people. They clearly passed on athletic and talented and added character as PART of the deciding process.

This is their creed and motto. This is the culture that they are building.

People that think team first, vs "ME first"

Bringing in Brian Hoyer is an enormous statement in regards to the future of Chad Kelly with the Colts. That tells me that the staff is still not sold that Chad Kelly is someone that they even trust the backup role to.

I think that they may let him walk or try to put him on PS (which he will be gone just as much)

IF the Colts decide that he is worth the risk, they will put him on the 53.

The Colts staff spend many hours with the guy. They know what he is, an what he isnt.

If they think that he isnt the guy, I might still try to get some value from him.

I would put him on the 53 and shop to see what he is worth

A conditional pick (tied to his performance to his new team) would seem to be fair, and bring something back.

Straight up, he MAY be worth a 6th to a team like the Steelers or Saints

But a conditional better pick, based on his performance on the new team, may be what would be asked (4th or 5th)

I hope they keep him, but think he is gone

FR jumped up and said "AV is our kicker"

The no commit comment on Chad Kelly is ALSO a statement

We will see in the next few days

I'd like to see proof of this. The only thing I can dig up is this article that says, "Kelly insists he never said anything about a gun. Calling in a firearm threat is a popular ploy security guards and bouncers use to get police to respond faster and in greater force."

That is FAR from a debunk. Anyone have something even slightly substantial?

    • I think we need to sign a vet, but Jackson isn't it. Age and his dirty playstyle are non-starters for me.   JuJu definitely flashed pretty well in the limited games we saw him in. If he's healthy, I think he'll be a solid CB for us.   He dominated every WR at the Senior Bowl, specifically in drills that heavily skew towards WRs, often using techniques he was just really learning in the pro-bowl practices (mainly press man techniques). He dominated in the MAC and dominated at Senior Bowl practices, and with his athletic traits, he projects very well to the NFL. I see him being a dominant CB in the near future. I don't necessarily want to take a CB at 15, but I wouldn't be mad if we took Mitchell.
    • There are quite a few articles on the internet that say he may transition to safety in the NFL. Interesting reads
    • He could feel that he needs Paye to develop into a more complete edge rusher. He keeps promoting that he was great as a run defender, but needs to continue improving. He invested a 1st on him, so he could very well want to retain him. My thought on drafting an edge rusher at 15 is that it works as a hedge in the event you don’t retain Paye or if the player shows far more promise than Paye moving forward. My comment about Pierce is that he invested a good draft pick on him- so the argument could be made that had Pittman walked, he would have Pierce (although we all agree that Pierce hasn’t performed like we hoped, nor would he be a wr1 by any means). He would have options this draft had Pittman not worked out.   The idea was more behind longterm planning when Pierce was drafted. Keep them coming in the pipeline so that you have options, and ideally good ones. Remember when Phillip dorsett was drafted? Many thought at the time the idea was to add to the room and hedge in the event TY walked when his contract was up. I’m not opposed to looking at stacking premium position players in the 1st round. That provides depth at the position short term and options longterm. It lessens the burden on a 1st round rookie at those positions, giving them time to develop.
    • Crazy that the draft is a month away coming up on us quickly.
    • Only 4 teams looking for GMs as of now,   NFC:    Cowboys     AFC:    Dolphins     Colts (Lucky Draw)  Ravens  Steelers
