Evan Mathis On Redskins Watch

of course we wont be able to match or better the offer to him, look at how much they offered Garcon, over priced for a number 2 wide receiver, yes Id like to have kept him if possible but still #2, they pay to much and still suck, its cause once you pay alot of athletes a but load of money and set them up for years and years with no incentive to earn more then ya end up with what the redskins have had for years all talent but bad results, but I bet Garcon will be their number 2, count them out if hes their number 1

Maybe hes got some sort of memory block over the last ten years or something paying these guys to much for poor results, I assume hes under thet thought process more money means good results, but my thought process says leave players with wanting more so they can EARN more

Mathis is one of a couple of guards we're looking at. I'd prefer to get a younger guy if at all possible.

How the heck do the Redskins still have cap space after the penalty and all their signings!?

They're probably going to do something stupid and overpay him.

Josh Morgan and Garcon only cost us about $3 mil in cap space this year. We still have plenty to work with.

someone needs to take dan synders checkbook from him

Snyder still signs the checks... but he doesn't make the decisions these days. It's funny to see people incorrectly assume things about how our organization works now based on how it used to work.

It's also funny to me when people go out of their way to call Snyder an *. I don't necessarily disagree... but the things he does make a lot more sense when you realize that he is a fan. How many of your fellow Colts fans would you trust to actually run the franchise? Not very many. There is some upside in that you know he's going to do anything it takes to win, which is why we spend so much money and is why we can do more with less cap (cash creates cap).

The big problem was less the rampant spending than it was that we didn't budget for depth. Now that we've started to focus on building a complete team under Allen and Shanahan, the spending is only an asset. The only things it hurts is Snyder's wallet and other owners who are unwilling to pay out.

Our lack of respect for the draft under Gibbs II really did a ton of damage, too.

If we want this guy we better strike quick. Once the Skinny's get involved no way we can match the stupid money they will throw at this guy

The Redskins doing what they do,over paying to have a losing record. Good thing we don't have D. Snyder. Irsay does one thing the masses don't agree with and look! Just think if we had that bafoon as an owner.

I'd be more worried about 'cash over cap'.

What's to worry about?

if you think RGIII that garcon is a number 1 wr and he deserved to get paid that much money your nuts

I love Garcon's skillset. I know he wasn't the number one receiver on the Colts and I don't necessarily expect him to be a true number one here. If he can break the 1000 yard barrier and benefit from Griffin III's deep ball ability then he'll be more than worth the price we paid.

Edit/note: I'd love to continue to engage you guys in discussion but apparently the board software hates me for not having enough approved posts. :(

Worth it? After these new contravts(Vjax desean) he's roughly the 10th highest paid WR in the NFL and all you want is 1k yards?!? No wonder you guys are in the situation you are in.

Btw thanks for the $ ...

Baltimore OG Ben Grubbs visiting New Orleans, so now Evan Mathis visiting Baltimore. Add Baltimore to the list of competitors for us for Evan Mathis :(

I think taking $3.2 million in salary on the Winston Justice deal pretty much shuts down the possibility of us getting Mathis or Grubbs.

At least I am hoping we use a little of what is left to re-sign Saturday???? Wishful thinking??? :)

I think the Colts have already made clear what capacity they want Jeff Saturday in, and it's not on the field. I think he's going to retire, but if he wanted to come back on a modest contract for a year, I think there might be an offer there.

We still have to keep something available on the cap to sign draft picks. And we might be adding more picks with the compensatories and whatever we might be able to squeeze out of a Freeney trade. Might be a moving back into the first round if we pull off a Freeney trade, requiring more cap space and more signing money.

I think, unless they can get a safety or another receiver, that there won't be anymore signings right now.

And, as I always say, I don't know anything. Just spitballin'.

to me the only reason they have been sucking is because of the horrible play at the QB position. they have ranked in the top 10 in defense every year for the last decade. and they have lost alot of close games due to poor QB play in the end. I.E. interceptions or throwing the ball away. RG3 will help them out tremendously. to be honest i believe he can turn Garcon into a number 1 WR. garcon just needs the chance, he didnt have that chance in indy with wayne around. big question is who should the colts sign as # 2 WR. Collie needs to stay in the slot, its where hes more effective.

    • I like Latu, but don't you think there's a significant number of teams that are scared off by his medical? And then a couple more who will downgrade him because of his age?
    • yeah pretty much what I figured.  If they are going to start mixing up coverages and running more man coverage, then sure grab a CB in the first.  If they're going to continue being a mostly zone team regardless, then no, no round 1 CB.
    • The mission is to build something that has us competing with the best of the best. This is a season for AR to get tuned up.  Who do you think will be the right guys on our roster now to take us to an AFC Championship game?  It's not Smith, Fries, and we likely can't get there with more than 2-3 of our current back seven.  I would offer Buckner to the Bears as part of a trade for 9. Eberflus wants to have a great D so maybe he bites.  Then hopefully trade back 2-3 spots for a good pick.  I'd love to come out of the draft with Latham and the Dline guy.
    • I think he's a little overrated as a corner prospect. Doesn't mean I don't like him, I do. But I was hearing about how incredibly athletic he is, people were talking about him like he was a lockdown defender, then I watch him for a couple games and I don't see that. So at first I was pretty down on him. Then I went back and watched him with my expectations much lower, and I see what he has to offer.   He's definitely athletic, but not the standout, premier athlete people were making him out to be at first. Watching his high school basketball videos helped me contextualize his athleticism, there's plenty of burst there. He has some struggles flipping his hips and staying connected late in the down. He's feisty and physical, plays the run with enthusiasm, tackles well, and he has explosiveness. He's better in shorter areas when he doesn't have to try to keep up with a receiver with elite speed. I know he ran 4.43, but it wasn't a pro day, it was a private workout. I discount timed speeds at pro days, and definitely at private workouts. To me, he's closer to 4.5 than 4.4, and that's what I expected when watching him play.   To me, he's a safety/nickel prospect, not a boundary corner. And if he were looked at as a boundary corner, I think his arm length would probably disqualify him for the Colts, at least in the first round. And I think the Colts already view corner as a Day 2 position. He's said all the right things about playing multiple positions. And while I don't know how the new rules will affect kickoffs, I think it makes sense to have good options at returner, so that helps his stock as well. But I think the second round is the right range for him. If we drafted him, I think we still need a boost on the outside.
    • Personally….  I’m hoping and praying you’re wrong.   I don’t even think Murphy is a Ballard type of player. He’s not tall or long or rangy or athletic.   He’s a 6’1” 300 pound ball of muscle.   I’m not saying he’s not a good player, he is.   But CB has never drafted or signed a player with that body type or athletic background.      Is it possible the Colts draft Murphy?   Yes.  I’m just hoping it doesn’t happen.   I’d be scratching my head forever.   Just my two cents.
