He's a Patriot.. are we surprised?

No it is crap but no not surprised at all yet they kicked Aldon Smith and Justin Blackmon out of the league for pretty much the same thing.

i have always rooted for this guy.  one of the most exciting WRs to watch in recent memory

i still wish the colts had gone after him.  even with the suspension the patriots still got a good deal

Good lord! How many chances is this wad going to get? He’s been reinstated more times than I can remember! It seems like he gets suspended indefinitely around week 8 and reinstated the next season every single year

It comes down to the player at least desiring to attempt to carry out a league mandated recovery, treatment, and sobriety maintenance plan for full reinstatement (it is currently conditional).

Note this in his reinstatement- "Subject to appropriate progress on clinical care and other arrangements, ..."

He wasn't given full access, and it's only until he gets his next failed urine test. It's a full on plan with steady testing. He's been around that block before and failed to cross the finish line.  It seems to me that if a player really shows initiative to overcome their issues, the NFL will give them (multiple) opportunities to do so.  But in the end, it will be that player himself that determines whether he succeeds and plays, or succumbs and fails.

The human side of me hopes he finally conquers his demons. The football fan inside me despises that if/when he does, he plays for the Patriots.

For cause.  Here's his timeline-

to  be reinstated requires:

APPENDIX B

Procedures for Reinstatement Following Stage Three Banishment

Any Player who has been banished under Stage Three may apply formally in writing for reinstatement no sooner than 60 days before the one-year anniversary date of the letter so banishing him.

The application should include all pertinent information about the Player’s:

(a) Treatment;

(b) Abstinence from Substances of Abuse throughout the entire period of his banishment;

(c) Involvement with any Substances of Abuse related incidents; and

(d) Arrests and/or convictions for any criminal activity, including Substances of Abuse-related offenses.

 Set forth below are the procedures to be used when an application is received by the Commissioner.

1. Within 45 days of receipt of the application, the Player will be interviewed by the Medical Director and the Medical Advisor, after which a recommendation will be made to the Commissioner with regard to the Player’s request for reinstatement.

2. The Player will execute appropriate medical release forms that will enable the Commissioner’s staff and NFLPA Executive Director’s staff to review the Player’s substance abuse history, including but not limited to attendance at counseling sessions (individual, group and family); attendance at 12-step and other self-help group meetings; periodic progress reports; and all diagnostic findings and treatment recommendations.

3. The Player will submit to urine testing by an NFL representative at a frequency determined by the Medical Advisor.

4. The Player will agree in a meeting with the Commissioner or his representative(s) to comply with the conditions imposed by the Commissioner for his reinstatement to the status of an active Player.

5. All individuals involved in the process will take steps to enable the Commissioner to render a decision within 60 days of the receipt of the application.

the two (Smiths timeline and Appendix B) don't mesh.

Here comes a 100 catch, 1600 yard, 20 TD season.

If he can lay off all banned substances... who knows, maybe not too far out there.

He will be tested a boatload though.

    • I watched alot of clips on Phillip Rivers over the years, both on the field and off. Personally, I resonate with his leadership style and personality. In my opinion he will represent the "horseshoe" super well.  He is REAL, meaning that he shows his emotion and is an expressive, entertaining character. He is honest and no nonsense.  Bottomline, he is very comfortable in his skin. He knows his football and will be a fantastic coach when he decides to leave football. I am rooting for him 1000%.
    • I'm a biased ND fan, so I love it when former Irish end up with the Colts.   So, similar to two years ago when OL was our biggest need and Nelson from ND was there for us, our biggest need this year is probably pass catchers, and a few good ones from ND should be available for us.   Cole Kmet - TE Chase Claypool - WR/TE Chris Finke - WR   Assuming Kmet and Claypool aren't snatched up early, all three of these guys could potentially be Colts.  Kmet as a true TE, Claypool as a hybrid matchup nightmare, and Finke as a slot-machine/returner.   Kmet:  6'6" - 262 lbs   Claypool:  6'4" - 238 lbs   Finke:  5'9" - 186 lbs   I'd love to get either Kmet or Claypool.  Finke doesn't move the needle as much for me.  With pass-catchers being probably our biggest need, I could even see Kmet at 34 and Claypool at 44.  Pair those two big-body guys with burners like TY and Campbell, not to mention Doyle on underneath stuff and Hines coming out of the backfield, and Rivers could have a heckuva year.
    • Not Rock or Moore. But Rhodes on the other hand, he's a huge gamble, and only on a 1 year deal. Are we getting the 16/17 Rhodes, or the 18/19 Rhodes. I simply think CB needs to be one of our first three picks. And there are a few guys at the top of the 2nd I could absolutely see doing as good or better than Rock did last year.   AC or Nelson getting hurt? Your draft above takes a C earliest, so doesn't really help in that scenario, unless you think a 4th round RT is going to help replace Nelson/AC. I'm all for taking OL early, just not C that early. My first 3 picks (in no order) are CB, OT/OG, WR unless Love somehow drops to 34 (which I highly doubt).
    • No prob.  Didn’t mean to rush you - just trying to prepare in case there was an inadvertent no-show...  Cheers...
    • Pick 34 needs to be a player that gets early PT.  Where does Rhodes fit in?  With Rhodes signed I think we go CB in more mid rounds.  Tell and another 3rd round rookie could learn behind Rhodes for a year.   I'd take Kmet at 34 if he was still there.  Not sure that he won't go in the 1st.    I still think we need another 3T.  Lewis, Autry, and Sheard (part time interior rusher) are not the answer behind Buckner, IMO.
