I'm interested in the athlete but character wise I'm not sure Ballard will be .

What do we know about his character? We know he had an ATV accident which voided his contract but he's 22 yrs old he's going to make mistakes.

I’d be interested, because he has some massive upside and potential. First, however, I think we need to know how much he would ask for. If it’s 4-5M, I think we consider it. You don’t find a guy with his ability that’s young in free agency

I liked him a whole lot coming out of Michigan State.  I even wondered if we should take him in the mid to late first round.  Of which NCF disagreed with me on the grounds of character, maturity and commitment to the game I believe. I disputed those things with NCF and it backfired on me.  I thought he would do well with the Hawks.  I couldn't believe with all the questioning of his commitment , the questioning of his ability to be a good team mate, maturity questions and other stuff he immediately came in and got on an ATF and damn near ruined his career before he ever got on the field.

I was thinking to myself how could he be so stupid that early in his career.  He doesn't have any arrests that I know of but no one seems to be running to sign him up even though he's very talented.  I think teams have some other issues about his character and maturity levels that they are questioning.  It's just my guess at this point.

Why not give him a shot? SHOT  I believe Ed Dodds was still with Seattle when they drafted him.  I would bet he would have a lot of interesting input on this.  On one hand I can see Ballard being interested.  You know young player with huge talent needing to mature needing a second chance.  Then again he might not have the commitment and he could be a locker room problem, maybe.  Hard call I think.  Giving him a shot now doesn't mean he makes the team.  So if we want to give him a shot this is the time to do it.  Looks like McCoys to expensive so why not.  I don't see any real downside bringing him in for camp.   We could get a player with a changed attitude and real motivation.  JMO.

I think showing interest in too many FAs can cause our young developing players to feel like CB is down on them somehow. The psychology of player development should be overwhelmingly positive so why risk flatlining a player who they believed in when they drafted him.

Is there a link?

The guy was good

He had an injury on an ATV that kept him out that kept him out but Seattle paid him most of it

(Part of what Seattle is trying to get back)

He was good against my beloved Buckeyes.... (And the rest of the NCAA)

He is said to be a bit of a headcase, but I cant seem to find examples

2 Years of rehab, does wake up some younge'ns

He is a Seattle cut, so no trade needed

IF he

Wanted to play

Is healthy

is grown up

Lotsa IFs.......

But on ther surface, would seem like worth a try......  IF the "ifs" are in line

You almost HAVE to say that the odds are LOW of it actually happening

They didn't get aggressive with bringing in McCoy....... seems like they are happy with what they have....

Ballard said it himself he is always looking for talent.  Never stops.  Showing interest and signing a player are two different things like we have seen.  Players should know there will always be competition.  GMs and HCs don't have a lot of time.  They should always be on the lookout for acquiring talent.  It's the business they're in.

I see your point and agree. You always have to be looking for players who could improve the team. Would it be fair to say that Ballard goes about it in an under the radar kind of way for a reason (possibly to spare the young developing players any dips in confidence or motivation)? Links to CBs interest in higher profile players mostly comes from media people imo.

I think Ballard and his team are all about keeping things in house.  You never hear anything really concrete from him about any players we might be interested in when they are truly available.  I think it's prudent for all of the potential parties to try and keep it that way.  It's the agents job is to drum up interest and the media is their best friend.  I think when the Colts are linked with a FA you have to take it with a grain of salt.  We are a contender with cap space.  I think we will most likely be mentioned concerning a high profile FA if the media perceives a match.  It's just the way it is.

IMO, your second sentence answered your first question. What one's character is to me, is decided largely by the decisions that person makes.

That he was arrested for disorderly conduct in an Atlanta nightclub?

Here is the 'playbook on McDowel, as I see it.

Seahawks took a chance.  A lot of teams apparently stayed away from the physically gifted – at least, prior to his injury – because of McDowell’s lack of motor on the football field and reported oddness of the interviews he gave during the NFL Combine.

McDowell was injured on an ATV the year he was drafted and has never played a down in the NFL. There is a chance he might not ever, as well.  He must clear an NFL team physicians physical on 'football playing' shape, not some independent doctors clearance.

Seattle waived McDowell with a non-football injury designation (NFI), then asked for $799,238 of his $1.6 million signing bonus that Seattle had given him. An arbitrator ruled in Seahawks favor. McDowell has yet to repay it. Seattle has since filed suit against him in District Court (Eastern Michigan) to get it back.

I don't know about his character but the above alone is unsettling enough for me.  But it is even worse when you add in his disorderly arrest in an Atlanta nightclub mentioned above-

https://www.fieldgulls.com/2017/12/12/16770598/malik-mcdowell-issues-apology-disorderly-conduct-arrest-seahawks

He has also failed a few Seattle NFL team physicals even recently, and their doc can and most likely will share his results to the Dr's on the other teams if they want. So no team would be on the out for his current medical, but some may want to bring him in for their own physical tests at their discretion. I believe Dallas just did this a little while back. They haven't cleared him yet either, AFAIK. Clearing someone to play on an NFL D line in a 3 point stance that is coming back from an apparently significant brain injury can be dicey.  I'm not interested in him at all at this time.

I know....   I thought of that when I wrote it.    There are times feel old around here...     other times I feel half my age...     wish it wasn't so, but there it is...

We could use a talent like him on our DL, but I just think there is a reason no one is breaking their neck to sign him.

I think what I posted is enough for most teams...

Now... who are the rogue few to eventually do a deal ...

I think we can put this baby to bed now. His career is done.

It would be probably 1-2 Million on a 1 year deal.

Some team will sign him as a specialist.

He's obviously unstoppable in the TASER TASER TASER package.

I want the Colts to sign Aaron Hernandez for the Shotgun and Pistol formation.

Of course, same for the Indiana Pacers. He would offer them a much needed shooter.
