Some E J Speed highlights.

I gotta say, both he and Okereke's film looks like Darius Leonard's from last year....

Instinctual.....sideline to sideline speed.....hustle....wrap up tacklers.....and they all look long and lean....

I'm pretty excited about the new depth and Thomas, Moore, and Franklin should be on notice.

Thanks for adding the video. Man he looks really good. I really like how he can line up anywhere and I really liked his angles on making tackles and how he didn’t over pursue. In the video he reminds me of a poor mans polomalu or however the heck you spell it, but that’s in college I’m hoping he plays just as well at the pro level.

I love Skai's instincts in coverage but his athletic limitations puts him behind both of them......and as you may recall I loved me some Skai Moore last year!

I dont like Moore primarily because hes a weak tackler against the run. You can tell EJ speed likes to thump.

Pass coverage and speed will be negated if we cannot force enough 3rd and long situations by playing the run well. Note that everyone around the league is getting smaller and faster, The Patriots are bucking the trend or setting the new trend by going bigger.

I will try to find the article again, but I read an article that Speed got a couple of offers from a DIV 1 schools but chose to stay near home because his brother had cancer.  The plan was to play at Tarlerton until his brother recovered and then they were going to play together.  But his brother died and he just stayed there.

I found the article

I was thinking the same thing. Speed looks like a Leonard clone in his highlights.

I'm about as excited with this kid as about any of the draft picks.

A 6'4" big linebacker with speed and hits like a truck, yeah I'm

on board.

Leonard, Walker, Okereke or Speed "your pick three" is gonna be

fun watching these guys swarm.

“You can just look at my history from the Lone Star Conference. Danieal Manning, Johnny Knox, J’Marcus Webb – we all, we drafted. I worked in Kingsville where I coached all those players so I know the conference really well,” Ballard said regarding Speed and his background being from a lower level of competition. “We comb, our scout went in there and had a grade on him. He had a great workout. We were combing the numbers. He had an unbelievable workout. We started studying him more and we just see a guy that’s got really big upside as an inside backer.”

Manning was a baller, knox was a good 3rd/4th guy with return skills and Webb has been a solid tackle for quite a few years. I'd say Ballard has a good track record down there!

The are not going to be able to hide Speed on the practice squad.....  so I think he will be taking one of the last year drafted LB's spot.

There's some room. Goode is gone. You have a 7th rounder ( Franklin) and 2 FA rookies (Moore ,and Adams ) that were on our roster last year.

I would think Speed has more upside than any of those last remaining 3 guys. They are probably  all (maybe one stays ?) gone as you have Benogu , Okereke joining Speed.

    • I would but would want a deal where it was a third round pick, but couldn’t see Saints doing that.  Woukd have a high end CB and still have our top two picks
    • nice     Edit:   Also both the trades mentioned here pretty much followed the draft value chart.     Talking trading up to #38 from #44 and offering a 4th   Difference in #38 and #44 is 60pts(avg 4th round value)   Ended up trading up to #41 from #44 for a 5th.   Difference in #41 and #44 is 30pts(avg 5th round value)
    • Our defense will never be GREAT as long as we play * defense by having corners 10 yards off the ball on 3rd and 3. And an unbelievable unwillingness to blitz more than 4 times a game. And also, it doesn't matter who is in the secondary if the front seven can't stop the run(we can) and get to the passer(we did ok getting to the passer, but we need more blitzing from lb'ers). Our first pick should be an offensive lineman like Fuaga, Powers-Johnson, or Barton. Then target a receiver like Polk, Pearsall, Washington, Corley, or Roman Wilson in the second or third rounds. As much as I would like to get Bowers I just don't see it happening. And we need a very good linebacker to go along with Speed and Franklin.
    • Yeah, could very well be. I think I remember Ballard said he did it to have more flexibility when asked. if it is Paye, I would rather see him play out the year before extending.
    • The idea of DeJean going in the late first round is due to his instincts and overall very competent play in nearly all aspects of DB play.  Cover 3 FS is more valuable, IMO, than a cover 2 FS.   Contrast DeJean's overall RAS and talents with Hooker, who was only good at being a single high deep guy...especially his rookie year where he picked off bad QBs for a while...and DeJean at 22 or later with a 3rd round pick gathered from a trade down is a much better decision than Hooker was at 15.   BTW, Blackmon had the same ACL injury as Hooker and did well as an overall S as a rookie, but wasn't a single high speed guy, and is probably still a better overall S now than Hooker is in DAL...both having the exact same injury years ago.
