Shouldn't people and more specifically the team, be super selective on who it's okay to give these chances to?  It would be worse to lump all items into one basket.

If JB wants to be a starter, there are at least 20 better places to be besides Indy. Sitting behind a guy like Luck is bad thing for more than 2 years if you're young and want a chance.

Where would he go that he would start right now and not be on an entirely terrible team?

Free agency and the draft answered that question.

You would have to consider him a top 20 QB also. Which he is clearly not.

Agreed -- I think he's one of the best back-up QBs in the league.

I just don't see any team right now where he would go in an be the lock to win the starting QB role.  Miami seems to have been the best option as I think he could beat out Fitzpatrick, but I imagine they're not really interested after getting Rosen from Arizona.

I'm really not sold on Lamar Jackson, and think Baltimore would be his second best fit to get a good starting opportunity in the AFC (though, he'd probably have to rely on an injury to Jackson for the spot to open up this year).

In the NFC, his best shot would be beating out Colt McCoy/Case Keenum in Washington (assuming Alex Smith is going to be out a while with that nasty leg injury).  Then maybe he could bet out Jameis Winston in Tampa Bay, but that's a big maybe.

Otherwise, I don't see a single NFC team that he'd go to and have more than a very small chance of becoming the starter on.  There are plenty of teams who have worse back-ups than Brissett, and who could become desperate if they lost a starter... but in reality there are 0-4 teams in the NFL where he'd have a good shot at becoming the starter the way rosters are lined up today (probably closer to 0-1 teams).

I'm not too worried about it.  Chances he beats out Jacoby are insanely small.

He is literally a guy that you can send in during the parts of the pre-season games where the scrubs play and it's not going to be terribly meaningful to your team if he gets hurt.

I'm not saying he can start anywhere. What I'm saying is that Indy holds a zero % chance of starting unless Luck goes down again. If I were him I'd go to either a team in the bottom half (passers) of the league, and also somewhere that the current QB is likely to get injured is thought to be short term.

There's plenty of teams with shaky and mediocre QB situations. Indy is just the opposite.

He has a chance to win a ring in Indy and keep himself healthy.  He'll be a free agent after this year and can pick and choose where he wants to wind up.  Right now, it doesn't look like any of the teams with a shaky QB situation (there really aren't all that many) are in good position to win.

Also, Luck is a year removed from missing 1.5 seasons from what many initially thought may be a career-ending injury.  The chances he is likely to get injured as just as high as the chances of any other QB getting injured.  Fingers crossed that Luck doesn't get hurt, but at this point in time I do not see any situation that is clear-cut better for Brissett than Indy (let alone 20).  If another team has their top QB go down early in the season or in the middle of the season when they're in the playoff hunt, we still have trade value with Brissett even though he's a FA after the year.  If not, we retain one of the top back-up QBs in the NFL and he can pick where he wants to go after the season.

If I'm looking to be a starter, I'll take a trade (it's only for one year) to a team with the highest % chance of me playing over a back up SB ring (we're 16-1 odds) every day all day. I'm not going to waste a year of a short career.

Because it SHOULD BE crickets here on Kelly.     First,  there's nothing official.    Second,  when it becomes official,  he's a camp body coming in as QB4.     If he screws up,  he's cut almost on the spot.    If he doesn't screw up,  maybe he's competing for QB3.

There's a better than 50/50 chance Kelly has been to rehab.    Buying a character question on the "cheap" is always a factor for all teams.    That way,  they don't have much invested in him.   No draft pick.    No signing bonus.    No big salary.    Just an opportunity to jump start his career.

Little downside,  with much more possible to the upside.

If Ballard is willing to invest,  there's a strong chance that the "character" issues have been addressed to a level where he's comfortable.    So if Ballard is comfortable,  then shouldn't we be comfortable too?

There are no openings at this point since every QB needy team either signed and/or drafted a QB

I never heard Earl Morrall or Matt Cassell complain about being the backups on Championship teams

Being a Backup worked out well for Gary Kubiak and Jason Garrett

I'm gonna say JB sees himself better than EM, MC, and the rest. Who's going to complain about a ring, but what player who really wants to start, wants to sit behind a top 10 QB.

Take the bottom 16 passing teams. There's teams 1) who have mediocre QBs still, and 2) who have athletic QBs with a potential to get hurt or get the hook. If I were him, I'd try to get to Baltimore.

Now it’s let’s wait and see but normally it’s “not interested” and immediately “he’s not a locker room good guy.” I just find it funny how people here didn’t immediately shoot this down, instead of taking the wait and see approach.

The Brass if the teams with those “mediocre” QBs either don’t see it or feel they have it solved

    Take Eli

Yes Eli is on the decline but Gettleman drafted Daniel Jones with the 6th Pick

He would be #3 at Baltimore unless Lamar and RGIII both get hurt

Because, it's not for the roster.  It's one of 90 guys at camp. There are not going to be 90 choir boys at camp.  Also, Ballard has mentioned he's going to take a calculated risk on 'good' players with a red flag when the locker room could absorb it, and Brian Decker gives the thumbs up.

But it's not a risk to have an extra camp arm among 89 other guys. IMO.  But if his talents get him to the 53, then I'll raise concern.  Allegedly kicked off high school, college, and an NFL team. But in Brian Decker I trust, and Kelly has to clear that hurdle before he can get on the 53.

RG3 is done for all intents and purposes as a starter. And I can see an early flame out or injury for Lamar. Had RG3 not signed a 2 year deal a couple months ago, it would have been perfect for JB. And I disagree he'd be 3rd. I'd rate him over RG3. There's several reasons Wash and Clev game up on him as a starter.

NYG were 11th in passing last year, but Eli's age is a "thing" and they need to start looking to the future. Jones was perfect given his relationship with Cutcliff and the Mannings. Should make for a better than usual transition.

Those GMs and Coaxhes are happy with their respective coaches and in the Baltimore System JB would behind RGIII

He is a heathen unworthy of our holy locker room.

Tar and feather him, then drag him out of town and throw him in a ditch.

There, is that what you were expecting?

Yeah that’s the usual talk for anyone with a checkered past. Thanks

The only way that Chad Kelly would be worthy of being on this team would be if the rest of the team took a dump, and he ate it, allowing a fraction of the team's greatness to be transferred to him.

Fortunately, he's not even worthy enough of eating their dumps.

Come on PT (-: , Baltimore just switched OCs two years ago. Mornhinweg is an up and down retread, and who knows how long he'll be there. He certainly didn't light the world on fire his last gig with the Jets, or his later years with Philly. His best years were with very special QBs. LJ (and RG3) are that IMO.

If Luck when down again, are you saying you'd rather have RG3 than JB. Not me.

Baltimore has no problem with it especially since he was on the 53 all year

Lamar was a very unique case last year coming out of Louisville as a primary rusher

I am very happy with JB as #2

Point is, if Lamar goes down, they will not be happy with RG3 as the starter. And even if healthy, it's hard for me to see Lamar succeeding in the league. He's a major dice roll as a starter, and RG3 is now a journeyman back up who already had his shot.

Our opinions do not matter

I am not a fan of a Dirty Bird(UK Fan) or RG but the Ravens like both plus I do not punish JB

Didn't we just resign PW to a 12 year practice squad contract?

Even with that 12 year contract, he will be released next week.....only to be re-signed to a 13 year contract.....released the following week.....and so on...and so on.

Poor guy must sign 4 day contracts.

It doesn’t matter to “certain” people. It’s not like he was a high schooler that was caught on tape having issues. Why not just blast that video tape of youth for the world to see during prime time TV. Thanks ESPN.

What in the flipping world are you talking about?    Would you like to try again simple plain English?

And who are “certain people”??   Who?   And how do you know things don’t matter?   And what does ESPN have to do with any of this?

What are you trying to say?   Then say it!   Goodness gracious....

    • Can you expend on this, why do you think that?
    • No, but I would love that! Is that true? Where did you hear that? I don't think that will happen. I heard that trading Herbert would result in a huge dead cap hit for the Chargers, that would make it nearly impossible to keep or sign other players.

    • Final edition, call it a less penalty driven team draft.   The Colts trade up on Day 1.   Round 1 a)       WR Rome Odunze (Washington) – led all receivers in CFB in pass interference call draws with 9 in 2023. b)      LCB Quinyon Mitchell (Toledo) – Only had 3 penalties in the last two seasons. c)       WLB Edgerrin Cooper (Texas A&M)   Round 2  a)      OL Cooper Beebe (Kansas State) – Jack of all trades OL No matter where Cooper Beebe lines up, he produces elite play. At right tackle in 2020, he was a PFF honorable mention All-Big 12 honoree. As a left tackle in 2021, he was named first-team All-Big 12. In 2022 at left guard, Beebe was a second-team All-American.  Beebe's 94.0 pass-blocking grade over the past two seasons led all offensive linemen in college football. During that span, he didn’t allow a sack on 770 pass-blocking snaps.  Beebe is the only FBS guard who ranks in the top five in both PB (4th) and RB (2nd).  He still hasn’t allowed a sack since the 2020 season. 2023 earned college football midseason all-America First Team.   Very few penalties throughout his career. b)      FS/NCB Javon Bullard (Georgia) – only had 5 penalties in college. c)       SS Jaden Hicks (Washington State) – 2023 PFF TOW 2 honors. Leader on defense that off to a strong start for 2023 earning a 90.1 PFF grade in coverage with one interception after 3 weeks, dropped another but forced 4 incompletions.  Great field and anticipation skills along with ball production.  Versatile can align up in FS, SS, LB, or nickel.  Only had 3 penalties in 2023.   Round 3 a)       CB Khyree Jackson (Oregon) – 2023 PFF TOW 4 honors.  Jackson had a decent Senior Bowl Week and is best in Zone Coverage. Jackson’s got excellent height we covet at 6’3” with great weight at 203 pounds, with ideal arms 32” and the span of 78” and good 4.44s-Forty.  Only committed 4 penalties in 2023. b)       DB Dadrion Taylor-Demerson (Texas Tech) - only 7 career penalties with 200 tackles, 57 stops, 11 pressues, 3 sacks, 16 passes defended, and 10 interceptions. c)       LCB Kris Abrams-Draine (Missouri) - 2023 PFF TOW 4 honors.  After 6 games leads all FBS players with 8 PBUs (1.8 PDPG) while adding 3 INTs.   10 combined interceptions and (7) forced incompletions are the most among Power Five CBs while only allowing 11 catches all season. 2023 college football midseason all-America First Team.  His 86.8 coverage grade is 5th highest in the FBS allowing just 107 passing yards and 11 receptions on the season. d)      SWR Malik Washington (Virginia) – Josh Downs 2.0 and only committed 4 total penalties in five years (52 career games).   Round 4 a)      RG Zak Zinter (Michigan) 2022 PFF Week 5, 11, 12 TOW Honors. 2023 earned college football midseason all-America Second Team.
