New 5 round Mock with 2 trades

Recommended Posts

Its a lazy Sunday afternoon. What better to do than a Colts' mock draft!

Two trades:

1. Because the top pass rushers are gone, Colts trade pick # 26 to New England for the Pats' #32 and #97. The Pats grab a QB to groom.

2. Colts trade pick #34 and #129 to Tampa Bay for the Bucs' #39 and #70. T. Bay moves to grab the last good QB left after the first round run and pays extra for him.

Basically, the Colts pick up two additional 3rd round picks for a slight drop back in the 1st and early 2nd rounds.

Colts first 5 rounds.

Round 1, Pick 32: Dexter Lawrence, DT. They will work 15 lbs off him and he will become a terror.

Round 2, Pick 39: Jonathan Abram, S. He will take Geathers' spot after next year, if not sooner.

Round 2, Pick 59: Kaleb McGary, OT. All the personal connections are there. Mudd gets his clay to mold.

Round 3, Pick 70: LJ Collier, DE. Not the alpha pass rusher we all want, but a very solid DE who can get in the backfield and hold the edge.

Round 3, Pick 89: DaMarkus Lodge, WR. The third of the three musketeers from Mississippi. He's underrated and a steal at this point in the draft.

Round 3, Pick 97: Alex Barnes, RB. Here is a big, tough third down specialist with skills and hands. He becomes Mack's backup.

Round 4, Pick 135: Jordan Brown, CB. This guy is from a FBS school but has skills, size and promise.

Round 5, Pick 164: CJ Conrad, TE. A quality TE who slips because of a bad heart test at the combine. A 2nd opinion has cleared him to play.

I know we are all approaching mock draft burnout, but....so what? Would love to hear back from the gang. Critics are welcome.

Very good draft, the way it is!! I don't think we draft an RB to become Mack's backup per se, especially with the way I feel Reich is going to be rotating backs based on match ups, much like NE and the Eagles do, and most teams should as well. But I see his role. If there is a position to be compromised on Day 2, it is most likely the RB position, IMO because outside the top 2 backs, every other RB can be coached up from picks on Day 3, I feel.

Your draft underscores the strength of this draft, which is on Day 2, in rounds 2 and 3, and without the trades to do so, I cannot see how we can come up with at least 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, which is essentially what we need to use the last 2 drafts as the cornerstone building blocks for the future.

I get why the Colts might want the New England pick, but I don't see how it makes sense for NE.

I realize there are tons of scenarios that could cause trades in real life on draft day(maybe even this one) . But, for mock purposes this trade only seems to serve to give the Colts the picks you want them to have. Given who is picking after #26 any QB there at 26 is likely to drop to the Patriots at #32.

Thanks for completing. Your mock fills some holes

If I was trading, I'd be looking for more round 2 picks, in this years draft.

There seems to be some great starter talent there

I continue to be torn on Lawrence........   At least HALF of me likes the pick :)

I think you will see at least ONE of Tillary, Wilkins, and Simmons, still on the board when we pick.

You may be right about no team between the Colts and Pats needing a QB, but the Pats could move up to avoid another team jumping them from early in the 2nd round. If the Colts let it be known that they are amenable to trading out of the 1st round, it could happen. Or the Pats could be enamored with a non QB.

Either way, it would be nice to hear your opinion on the players selected in the mock.

If the Pats trade with us, it would be because Noah Fant or Hockenson drop to No.26, IMO.

Teams that need a QB after us would be the Chargers and Saints for potential replacements for Rivers and Brees. If Daniel Jones is there at No.26 and the Chargers are around the corner, the phone is definitely ringing.

    • In 2011 Falcons selected WR Julio Jones with 6th overall pick from Cleveland Browns, giving up a package of 5 draft picks … Atlanta's No. 27 overall 2011 1st round pick, their 2012 1st round pick, 2011 2nd & 4th round picks, & a 2012 4th round pick. Ergo, there’s precedence.   I remember at the time thinking Atlanta was crazy to give that much up.  I also remember thinking a couple of years later, Falcons have a star receiver, one of the best in the game, so did giving up so much really matter?   I also remember the hype surrounding a Julio Jones at his time of being drafted, and he was NOT touted as being as sure fire as Marvin Harrison Junior currently is.  Also note, if the Colts trade up, the team dropping down is not dropping down as far as Cleveland did back in 2011 (6 to 27) as compared to, say, 4 to 15, so it might not cost quite as much as Atlanta gave up.   i am inclined to say pull the move up trigger.
    • Yeah I was unclear on that, my bad. To me there's a difference between total resources and 1st round picks. Meaning we'll have a high end cap hit on the lines typically. But I don't think he's shown he's opposed to drafting any position group in the first
    • im back, and still think ballard sucks. so there's that
    • Thanks @Superman for posting everything for those of us who couldn’t follow live.
    • Here's what I think.  He told us what he's going to do, or at least expecting to do. He said: "We're gonna trade back (three times)"  He loves the OL in the class. (yes, he said you could get one in round three, BUT I expect one higher) Asked about weapons for a young QB: He said,  "protect them. block; keep them safe." Look at all the teams in the playoffs, they can protect. "Andrew used to tell me, "just block for me; I'll do the rest" "Do they want a superstar receiver? YES, but block for me; keep em blocked." Oh yeah, and there's a corollary to that. There are two ways to beat a great QB (offense); one is pass defend, but the other is sacking and disrupting. So, I'm guessing we trade back in the first for more picks; we are just as likely to pick an early round OL, DL as we are a CB or WR.   and with that, I hope we end up with Brock Bowers
