Dr. T's Annual Colts Draft Contest: 2019

Recommended Posts

Welcome once again to Dr. T's annual Colts Draft Contest for 2019! Since there are nine choices again this year, there was some discussion that the rules needed to be changed again. In collaboration with Chad 72, we have decided that contestants will have three picks in the first THREE rounds (A, B, and C) and two choices (A and B) for all rounds thereafter. In rounds 1-3, correctly choosing choice A merits 5 points, while correctly choosing choice B or C instead will merit 4 and 3 points, respectively. In the other rounds, correctly picking an A choice in the correct round wins 4 points, while correctly picking a B choice in the correct round merits 3 points. If one of your “A” selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 2 points each, while if one of your “B” selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 1 point each. If one of your “C” selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 1/2 point each. If AND ONLY IF there is no clear winner at the end of 7 rounds, the contest will be extended for ALL participants and any selection you predicted in one of the earlier rounds that is instead picked by the Colts after the draft as a collegiate free agent will count for one point each.

Make your choices in this thread by listing the round, choice A, B (or C only in rounds 1-3), for each round, with the name of the player, position and school. You may also write with each choice a little blurb explaining why you chose that person.

Your 22 selections for new Colts this year are as follows:

Round 1 - #26 A, B, C

Round 2a - #34 A, B, C

Round 2b - #59 A, B, C

Round 3 - #89 A, B, C

Round 4a - #129 A, B

Round 4b - #135 A, B

Round 5 - #164 A, B

Round 6 - #199 A, B

Round 7 - #240 A, B

Please be a good sport and do not just copy other contestant's selections. You can easily do some research on your own, since plenty of free draft services are available on the web. Also, you can make changes to your selections before the contest is closed on Thursday April 25, 2019 at 7 PM CST, on the first day of the draft, but if there is a trade before the draft and one or more of the picks change, we will start over. Good luck and let the best GM win!

Very smart and certainly within the rules!

We have been doing this contest for more than a decade and I can count on one hand how many contestants during that time has used this strategy.  Well done!

As a former winner, I wish I could do it this year but we have been moving and I just haven't had time to properly analyze the prospects enough to make any educated guesses.  Good luck to all and I will hopefully join you all next year!

1 hour ago, TheNextGM said:

I’ll say Colts trade 26, 59, and next year’s first to get into top 10 and take Sweat. I still made guesses for 59 in the event they don’t trade up!

If they passed on Hurst 5 times last year due to his heart condition, why would they trade up to take Sweat with his heart condition in the first round this year?

I'm guessing Sweat is probably off the Colts board entirely.

I only played this once before a few years ago (I think I tied for 3rd too...) and playing again for fun this year.

But I was thinking about the point system.  In real NFL life, hitting late in the draft can separate great football teams from good ones.  It's much harder to get those late round guys mocked (chosen) correctly.  I was thinking maybe hitting on A. and B. selections in later rounds should count for as much, or more points than than the 1st 3 rounds. (players much more well known).

Just a thought, except it would also defeat the strategy of picking more blue chip players late just to get more points.

You’re going to get points only once for Abram, you know that, right? :)

Or did you intend to edit it later and forget?

Chad is right. You only get points once for any correct choice. I will award you the highest point total for the correct selection, but you won't get double points.

    • Well….  If you see Murphy as a 3T and are not concerned about all the other players who can play there, you’re fine then with Murphy only playing roughly 25 percent of the snaps for perhaps 2-3 years?   You’re ok with that for a first round pick?   Because I thought Ballard went out of his way to say Buckner was a physical freak of nature who might be able to play much longer than one might normally expect.    Curious to your thoughts here.
    • Any worries about rumored shoulder issue?
    • I knew I had a favorite last year, but I thought I would be good with whoever the Colts picked... and this was until the odds for the Colts picking Levis hit -4000 or something of the sort about half an hour before the draft and my heart completely dropped. In a way I'm happy the odds-makers completely missed on this one... it showed me how I really felt about those players and made me even more appreciative for us drafting Richardson an hour later.    So... you would be good with any of them... but who do you REALLY want?    On your question... if I had to guess, most Colts fans haven't watched this QB draft extensively. I know I haven't. So his statistical profile doesn't scream 1st rounder so... possibly why not many people really like him. Also keep in mind that this is compared to the other 3. 2 of them have been crowned as the next big thing for a while now and the third one won the Heismann with some exceptional performaces throughout the year.
    • My sleepers: (meaning, the kind of players coaches would like to have, more than what consensus big board gives credit to them. Some of them might need couple of years to attain their high potential, if drafted into suitable coaching environment, so a lot depends on that. Some of them have injury concerns too).   Most of them are high IQ players or high-effort, high-motor players - two traits I look for from the Drafted players, list is long but I like these guys.. gonna be interesting to see where they land and how it works out for them in long run.    Payton Wilson, LB, NC State Caelen Carson, CB, Wake Forest Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale Maason Smith, IDL, LSU Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College Max Melton, CB, Rutgers Zak Zinter, OG, Michigan Bucky Irving, RB, Oregon Khyree Jackson, CB Oregon Dylan McMahon, C, NC State (good fit for Browns)  Tykee Smith, SAF, Georgia Ainias Smith, WR, Texas A&M Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame Michael Barrett, LB Michigan Malachi Corley, WR, Western Kentucky Beaux Limmer, IOL, Arkansas   Kamren Kinchens, S, Miami McKinnley Jackson, IDL, Texas A&M Kalen King, CB, Penn State Justin Eboigbe, IDL, Alabama    Jacob Cowing, WR, Arizona Beau Brade, SAF, Maryland Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville Jalyx Hunt, EDGE, Houston Christian (I'm hoping for day 3 Vikings pickup, as Flores could work wonders with him)  Jaheim Bell, TE, Florida State Brennan Jackson, EDGE, Washington State  Delmar Glaze, OT, Maryland Myles Cole, EDGE, Texas Tech Kristian Boyd, DT, Northern Iowa Javontae Jean-Baptiste, DL, Notre Dame Jordan Magee, LB, Temple Myles Harden, CB, South Dakota Jalen Green, EDGE, James Madison (UDFA Target prospect)  Trey Taylor, S, Air Force (UDFA prospect) Eyabi Okie-Anoma, EDGE, Charlotte Qwan'tez Stiggers, CB, Toronto  Sundiata Anderson, EDGE, Grambling State  Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State (Special Teams, Returner)  Emani Bailey, RB, TCU   As for Vikings, I don't wanna rush to draft QB if the team isn't confident in the guys they could move up in draft range, and I'd like to just draft impact players that build the roster at this point.   Build the team, draft a franchise QB at right time, don't rush and ruin years trying to make someone work out in the NFL.
