What are the Major top needs we need in the Draft?

I think in no particular order of the picks of the draft depending on what's available , we need a potential great Wide out. Edge rusher,  defensive  tackle. and a Gronk type of TE if available. Those are my major concerns in this years draft, also Safeties and CBs are a concern  too.   Maybe my wish list is not doable for this year, but it would be nice if we could nail it this year. Any thoughts on the matter?

You can never have too much depth in the trenches.  Look at the Cowboys last year with Travis Frederick lost for the forseeable future and Zack Martin missing time.

When the season ended, I felt like these were the biggest needs:

Offense - RT, FB, WR/KR/PR

Defense - DE, DT, CB, CB, Hybrid Safety, SS & LB

 

Now with the FA signings & some additional thought, I've added TE to the mix. Also, with Houston signed for 2 years, CB, Hybrid Safety & Offensive skill position can draft earlier.

We currently have 9 picks in the draft and from a positional need I would estimate Ballard to draft 1 WR, 1 OT, 1 TE and maybe a QB in the later rounds on offense and 1-2 DE, 1-2 DT, 1 CB, 1 S and 1 LB.

 

Given the strength and depth of the various position groups in this draft, I'd expect us to go S earlier than most expect, since the drop-off after round 2-3 is pretty steep. Taylor Rapp is my favorite at that position so far, but the front-office should have a choice between several worthy prospects with one of our 2 second-rounders.

 

The CB class is pretty deep, with the best value in the middle rounds, which is why I expect Ballard to go CB in round 3 or 4 and not pick a corner in round 1, even if Murphy or Baker are still available at 26. Sean Bunting, Justin Layne (will probably be gone by our 3rd round pick), Trayvon Mullen, Julian Love or Jamel Dean might be some guys to watch in that range.

 

This is a very bad LB class at the very top, only the Devins are worthy of a higher round pick, but there are several developmental LBs later in the draft, so I'd expect Ballard to draft another LB late to add to our already very young LB group.

 

Just like CB, I feel like the middle-rounds are the sweet spot to pick a WR this year, there still should be plenty of good receivers left and depending on the kind of receiver Ballard is looking for, I can see us add JJ Arcega-Whiseside, Terry McLaurin, Miles Boykin or a receiver most of us have never heard of, but possesses the traits to become special, like Fountain last year.

 

I have a feeling we might draft an OT much earlier than expected, most are mocking a developmental OT in round 5-7, but I cannot see Ballard waiting so long to add depth to that O-Line - getting better not only requires addressing your weaknesses, but probably even more importantly improving and protecting your strengths. If a guy like Dillard falls to us in round 1, I can absolutely see that pick at 26, other than him however, I don't think I'd pick an O-lineman with our first two picks. If Lindstrom is there at 59, again the value might be too good to pass on that... however, my favorite as a backup-tackle with future starting potential right now is Max Scharping, who is probably rising to far to be had in round 4 unfortunately.

 

The Tight-End class is not spectacular, but our offensive system does not expect one TE to be good at everything. Ebron excelled last year despite his lacking blocking skills and the concentration drops he still had. But managing his snaps to his strenghts, we got the most out of him. Since the contract of Doyle is coming up after next season and his importance in run-blocking, I would like us to target a future replacement like Drew Sample out of Washington. He's a very good run blocker, who is not spectacular as a receiver, but was effective when targeted. No drops in his senior season, but he also won't take off for 80-yard TDs like a George Kittle, but neither does Doyle ;) 

 

There are just so many options at DE and DT that I'm probably just going to wait and see what Ballard does in the draft. I expect 2 of our first 3 picks to go to our DL and hope 1 of the elite guys drops to 26, but even if they don't, I trust Ballard to find the right fit for Eberflus' system.
