[Erickson] Clayton Geathers is finalizing a deal to return to the Colts (Merge)

Recommended Posts

Meh I was ok with bringing him back for cheap but if it stops us from drafting an actual good S early I'll be upset.

Odds are Geathers is not going to be turned into a full time linebacker.

First...   at his size, he’d play the same position as Leonard, so he’d be the backup and never play....

And second...   Ballard and/or Eberflus have talked about Geathers’ value is that he doesn’t have to come off the field.   And offenses are never quite sure where he’ll be and what he’ll do.

CG has some value to this team...  even if a good number of posters here don’t know it.

Sounds like a Bandit position in many HS/College Ds

Well he is rarely available to be on the field in the first place. Started what, about 20 games in the past 3 seasons?

I wish he would be a swiss army knife but it's definitely not rocket science to figure out what he does on the field since he can't cover. He is a good tackler, but highly doubt he'd make any qb scratch his head to be honest.

Not a hater, love what he does, but we need to get better at safety so we can unlock Hooker's potential.

At least Geathers is eligible to catch the ball.

I agree that it's not a big part of his game...but this should also be a big factor in how he gets paid IMO. He's a DB that doesn't make plays in the passing game...in a pass-heavy league.

It was a slightly tongue in cheek response on my part, but how many would Geathers really be expected to have? 2? 5? 10?

I just don't think that will really come into it in terms of what we want from Geathers in the next year or so, and so was an odd thing to hit him with.

Not that I expect that Geathers is great in coverage but I think better stats than sheer interception or passes defensed numbers would be to look at passer rating when thrown into his coverage and total number of passes and yards gained when throwing at his coverage.

Gipson plays a different position...and was a Pro Bowler at age 24. Had 20 PDs and 11 INTs in his age 23-24 seasons.

No way Geathers is perceived as "as good as Gipson" was. Gipson was sought after and signed very early in FA.

It’s useless man. They have an infatuation with Geathers around here. If he was a FA from another team, ppl would feel differently about him.

He said 'is'. You're saying 'was'.

I think you may both be correct, but it's JOO anyway, so no biggie.

I love how supportive other players are of their teamates. Ballard and Reich are creating something special.

I like Geathers...

I like him as an in the box safety or hybrid linebacker. He plays those well. I think people like him so much because there is nobody to replace him with that is an improvement.

Dude had 89 tackles in 12 games. If he kept the same average under 16 games, we're talking about 116 tackles. That's a lot.

I like Geathers too...   but I’m expecting the Colts to use either pick 59 or 89 on a safety.

Unless Ballard is feeling generous...it should be something similar to the Haha Clinton-Dix deal...considering Dix is a better player...and doesn't miss games every year.

I don't see why everyone laughs at Clinton-Dix's deal? haha

Maybe...but I think he was clearly using the Gipson deal as a basis for Geathers.

You know who else is infatuated with Geathers?   Some guy named Chris Ballard.   Imagine that?!

And some people are willing to trust Chris Ballard’s judgement over the opinion of posters here.   Imagine that?!

And some posters are more in love with their own opinion over the professional judgement of their own wildly successful General Manager.  How shocking!  (Sarcasm!)

There’s no infatuation here.  I think CG is one of the most disrespected players in this forum.

But, on balance,  most here trust Chris Ballard.   If Ballard wants Geathers then that’s good enough for most posters.   But apparently, not for you.

Another instance where Ballard lets some of his free agents test the market, only for them to come back.

That does seem to be happening with the Colts this off season and I like it …..GO COLTS !

2 years, 7.6...3 guaranteed.

He seems to be the exact kind of locker room presence the Colts desire. His play is worth re-signing, and I believe this year he stays healthy after a very unfortunate injury. It appears that if he is re-signed, Ballard thinks so too.

A couple of thoughts Shasta:

1. Clinton Dix is not a better player than Geathers. Period. He has been healthier, though.

2. I agree that Geathers won't break the bank. Because of his injury history, he's not likely to get more than a 1-2 year deal with some strong incentives baked in.

3. I would be shocked if the Colts don't grab a SS some time in Day 2 of the draft. That player will likely be seen as Geathers' replacement in the not too distant future.

I do agree with ya here for sure.

That said, some of it is warranted.

The most important ability is availability.

And CG has missed what? 23 of 64 career games? Including missing 22 of 48 in the past 3 years?

If he is only on the field 55-65% of the time then he deserves some of the venom. Can't help us if you aren't even playing.

I am actually very happy we are bringing him back.

I would just like to add another versatile guy that can play both spots as a back-up.

Have CG, Hooker, Farley and a 4th guy. Odum might be that guy but I am not sure that he is. I would still love to hedge our bets by seeing if Berry would take a one year deal since he can man either spot and would give us an elite set of 3 S when healthy.

And heck, between Geathers and Berry we might get one year out a full-time player w the two of their availabilities combined :-P

Doesn't hurt to dream :-)

I do think some players tend to get overrated by fans more than others. Geathers does seem to be one of those guys. It's a weird phenomenon...though it's probably not limited to just Colts fans.

I have a feeling that Tyquan Lewis will be the next one...if he isn't already.

Btw, if it wasn't posted already, it looks like it will be just a one year deal

It is funny to me that everyone gets on his  injury history but not on Hookers. Hooker only played one more game then and Geathers  was actually there for the colts in KC.

I don't think Geathers is disrespected. He is just not healthy enough most of the times to be able to relate to his play but in my opinion in today's NFL you need to be able to force turnovers, have a neck for the ball and he simply just isn't that He is a sure tackler, but give me someone who is at the right place at the right time.

He is a valued member of the locker room and I'm all for resigning him, but he isn't the future.

I am with you on the last two...but I don't think there is any objective measure that says Geathers is a better player than Haha. PFF (which is subjective...but less so than a typical fan opinion) has Haha graded higher and even if Geathers never got hurt...I doubt his AV would be any higher.

But they are different types of players. I just think a deal similar to Haha is what should be in store for Geathers.

If you've not seen people question Hooker's durability then you are either too new or have not been paying attention.

And maybe it is juts poorly written but your last line is just wrong.  It reads as a dig at Hooker - that he didn't WANT to play against the Chiefs and not that he couldn't play.

Haha would never be signed by CB, he just simply doesn't play hard enough, quits on plays and doesn't tackle. So in a sense, Geathers is the better football player.

I absolutely love this. And I love our safety room, especially at the value in which we have them at.

I feel really really good entering the season with Hooker, Clayton, and Farley as our 3 top safeties. Wouldn't mind a Day 3 rookie being added.

He let Geathers test the market until he came back and signed a cheap, low-risk deal. Ballard played it like he should.

Glad to have Geathers back.

I don't think this stops us from drafting a safety if the board falls a certain way, whether it be in the 1st, 2nd, or wherever. It's a really solid group in this draft.

Exactly. The feelings of fans should be nothing more than to rubber stamp the moves made by the team without question

That's fine...but we are talking about different things...talent/production vs. motor. I can't speak to Haha's issues in that area...but I can see that he is a higher-graded, more productive player.

It also ignores the fact that Hooker isn't a free agent in line for a new contract. It also ignores the fact that two years ago, there was legitimate concern that Geathers might never be able to play again.

I've seen a ton of mocks that have the Colts taking Taylor Rapp in the 2nd, which I'd be fine with. Let that SS group of Geathers, Farley, & -insert potential rookie name here- scrap & compete for the starting job, that's how it should be.

All I was saying is.....   Ballard likes him enough to want to bring him back and be the starter.

And for the poster I was responding to,  he's not happy about it,  no matter what he says after the fact.    He would've been happier if Ballard chose not to bring him back.    That poster would've then been able to crow about him being right about Geathers,  and how Ballard's decision backs him up.

But instead,  he wasn't going to attack Ballard,  so what did he do?    He attacked the fan base and basically called us sheep.    Didn't occur to him that many don't know quite what to think about Geathers because of his injury history and the fact that he's not nearly as good in pass coverage as he is in run support.     So, people don't know.

At that point,  we take our cues from Ballard.    If this GM wants him back,  then that's good enough for most.     Most,  but not all.

p.s. -- as I noted in another post,  I'm still expecting CB to use either pick 59 or 89 on a safety.
