Chiefs to release Berry

Recommended Posts

Looks like the Chiefs are releasing Berry since they signed Mathieu.

I’m not saying let’s go for him, but do you think Ballard will try for it? You know, being in KC previously.

Even if Berry is released,  I don't see Ballard making a move.

Berry is not a strong safety.    He is a free safety.

The Colts have Hooker playing there....

I love EB. If he checks out medically, hes the best at his position. I dont know if we want him as hes had a few significant injuries lately and i'm not sure if the Colts org wants to go younger.

I'm curious how much that actually matters.  I thought I read someplace that the distinction between free and strong safety in the Colts defense isn't really a big one because they are both asked to do the same job on opposite sides of the field.

That was under Pagano.    I don't think that's the case anymore with Ballard.

Hooker and Geathers are not interchangable.     One is clearly free.    One is clearly strong.

Well we run mostly a cover 2, which means both safeties play deep half zones. That seems to point to them being at least somewhat interchangeable, as their assignments are mirrors of one another.

The big distinction between what Geathers does is that he tends to move down to the "Big Nickle" in a 3 safety formation and cover a short mid zone.

If we brought in a player like Berry, we could use him to play the deep half with Hooker, while using someone else (Farley perhaps) as our "Big Nickle"

Not saying thats necessarily what we should do, just that its definitely doable with the formations we have been running.

Now if we plan to eventually move to more cover 3 looks as we get the proper personnel, thats a different story.

Look at your first sentence....

How often do you see Geathers deep?     With Hooker it's most of the time.    With Geathers its more like some of the time.

I don't see the fit for Berry.

Hey,  I hope I'm wrong.     I love the guy.    I'm sure Ballard does too.    If we sign him then I'm on board.

Like I said, Geathers did a lot of big nickle looks last year, playing an almost hybrid safety/LB role for us. We saw a lot of Hooker/Mitchell (or Odum) deep, with Geathers playing closer to the LoS.

    • Yeah, I'm expecting a lot of our games to be around the high teens/low 20s for a while, at least until teams start to gameplan against our rushing attack and try to take away the short stuff from Brissett.
    • “Antonio Brown was released today by the New England Patriots and is currently an unrestricted free agent,” the NFL said in its statement. “Our office is presently investigating multiple allegations, some of which are the subject of pending litigation. We have as yet made no findings regarding these issues. The investigation is ongoing and will be pursued vigorously and expeditiously.   “As long as Mr. Brown is a free agent, placement on the Commissioner’s exempt list is not appropriate. If he is signed by a club, such placement may become appropriate at any time depending on the status of the investigation. Upon the conclusion of the investigation, he may also be subject to discipline if the investigation finds that he has violated the law or league policies.”   Sounds like the NFL is discouraging any other team from signing him.         Ummm, don't think so Drew.
    • Not overly impressed. Average QB at best.  Needs to take more deep shots to the receivers.
    • In the film room, and likely during the game, Hoyer helps here as well. He can see things out there in real time and is not under duress.     He's been asked to not try to be Andrew Luck, but be himself.  While he gets a good feel, he's not going to go gunslinger and possibly throw pick 6's trying to be a hero. He will do what he needs to be competitive in the meantime. As the season progresses, I expect a little less being a game manager and a bit more quarterback play making to appear.
