Players being shopped around - J Howard, J Houston

Recommended Posts

Reich was asked today about the need for another receiver to pair with TY.  He referred to TY as being a top dog and he said if you know anything about dogs it's always better to have two instead of one.  I would think OBJ would qualify as a top dog.  What I do know is I don't envy Ballard at this time of year.  Many restless nights I would assume.

I'd love to have OBJ...or rather a player of his caliber lol. I'm sold that he's one of the 3 best WRs in the league, just worried that he may be a little too disruptive in terms of the cohesion the locker room seems to be gaining, and in a lot of ways, has already gained. Plus, the Giants will want way more compensation for him than Ballard is probably ever willing to spend. I think Ballard probably cringes at the idea of sending a 5th+, more less the 1st (or multiple 1sts) it would take to land a player like OBJ. Ballard is the kinda guy that would attempt to draft that talent, assuming he thought it was paramount for the teams success; or more paramount than other needs.

I would be a pass on OBJ.  He has undeniable talent.

Also has locker room issues and a contract that makes him the highest paid receiver in the league.

LaCanfora translation on Gettleman about OBJ-

"Hey, interested teams, it would take a ransom to get him, but keep calling. League sources indicated to me on Wednesday that the Giants are not averse to a Beckham trade -- even despite the massive hit they would incur."

A pre June 1 trade costs Giants 16 million dollars in dead cap hit.  After June 1, a trade is only a 4 million $ dead cap hit.  That's 12 million in cap space savings just waiting it out some.

A 3rd isn't a 'ransom', and GM's don't let some of the best players in the league out the door and suffer 16 million in lost cap space for a 3rd round draft pick. Well, at least ones that like to keep their jobs.

Odell Beckham, Jr. is and always will be a diva.  He manipulated the team and staff last year to the point where they're calling WR pass options.  Nothing wrong with scheming plays to maximize the skill set of your best player, but it's the way it was induced that brings a red flag.

OBJ has to have the ball and has to be the show.  He doesn't fit the high character, low profile mold of the Colts locker room or it's best player (before or with OBJ) in Andrew Luck.

I still can't believe the Giants gave him the contract they did knowing what they're signing up for.  Even for a 3rd rounder I'd want no part of this guy on a young, rising squad that exemplifies the word "TEAM."

If Houston was still in his 20's I would be all over giving up a mid round pick for him. I hope he hits the market and we can bring him in on a two-year deal to help mold the young guys.

I wouldn't mind giving up a 5th rounder for him. Here is why. His contract averages, what, about $16 mil. a year, and that is the going rate for pass rushers if we seek one in FA. Brandon Graham re-signed (3 yr, $40 mil. extension), Dee Ford, Clowney, Lawrence will be tagged and/or re-signed to long term deals. The exclusivity on age and ascending pass rusher as an unrestricted free agent probably belongs to Trey Flowers, and he is looking for $16-17 mil. per year contract anyways. Our commitment to FA pass rushers would have to be more than our possible commitment to Houston.

Of course, it comes with the assumption that Ballard is willing to pony up such amount of money for 2 years tops, if the player fits. If Ballard is looking for the next tier pass rusher like Preston Smith, much like he got Denico Autry last year, all bets are off.

Im sure KC would be all about getting a mid round pick for a 27 yr old Justin Houston.

The problem is that Houston is not 27.   He’s actually 30.   Born in January of 1989.

KC is not getting rid of Houston in his prime.   They hoping to trade Houston who is at the end of his prime for a good pick.

The player I'm interested in trading for Xavien Howard.

You want to trade a first round pick for Howard?   Because that’s what the Dolphins will want.

And soon Howard will want a BIG contract.

Dont see Ballard doing either.

Just some food for thought....

OBJ would be a great addition for any team. And it would take a lot more than a 3rd round pick to get him.

No. I don't like trading firsts rounders unless it's to move up.

Didn't think he'd be worth a first, just had heard they might move on from him in a few football related videos.

I didn’t think he’d be worth a one either.    But the last few weeks what I’ve heard is that for Miami to trade  him,  that’s what they’d want.

Kinda surprised me too.    Go figure.

The Giants would want more than a #1 for OBJ, they'd want a 1st and 3rd with the 1st being a top 15 pick. The Steelers want a #1 for Brown, the Raiders got a #1 for Cooper. OBJ may be a diva, but he's not a cancer like Brown is..

    • Any chance we take a OT with the 1st pick?
    • FWIW:   Today I listened to a guy from The Athletic interviewed on ESPN.   (Darren Lee). He said interviewing GMs at the combine, almost all view DeJean as a safety except two teams.  He thinks the Colts and Jags view DeJean as a corner.     I don’t know this reporter, never seen him before, so I can’t speak to his credibility.  But it sounds like he did a lot of homework.     And I appreciate your view on pro day times being reliable or not.   I’m always skeptical on pro days.  But I thought DeJean helped himself on his testing.
    • I could care less what he does. Been too long ago.
    • I’m with ya..     I'm not sure we’re going WR at 15 either.  I think we could go DE, and it’s possible we could go CB as well.   Gosh,  I love Mitchell and really like Arnold as well.  And if we trade back I would be fine with McKinstry or a DE on defense or one of the 2nd tier of WRs that could be there in the 20’s.  So many options.   I keep reminding myself, every pick could produce a surprise, because I think Ballard will have so many options to choose from.      Im also not sure Ballard will use all 7 rounds.   He finished in 5 rounds in his first draft 2017,  and he finished in 6 rounds in 2019.   Maybe he uses all 7 rounds, but I’m not confident we will.     One week from tonight.
    • My Final Mock Draft   15. Brock Bowers, TE,  6’4 245 Lbs, Georgia - Blue Chip Prospect.  Rare combination of acceleration, speed and body control. Hands-catcher operating with good coordination and technique. With Pittman on the outside Bowers will control the middle of the field and seams. AR Will develop much quicker into a top 10 QB with Bowers as his TE.  46. TJ Tampa, CB, 6’1, 190 Lbs, Iowa State - Elite physical traits. Plays with good positioning throughout routes. Very good in press Coverage and Zone. Expect him to compete in training camp and be named a starter.      82. Calen Bullock, S, 6’2 190 lbs, USC - Elite physical traits. He has the range to play single-high safety, the athleticism to line up over the slot and the ball skills to chalk up impressive on-ball production. Expect him to compete in training camp for the starting S position.    117. Tez Walker,  WR,  6’2 195 Lbs, UNC - Elite speed with very good body control. Career average of 30.7 yards on touchdown receptions. Gives us very good depth and competition with Pierce.    151. Grayson Murphy, DE, 6’3 260 Lbs, UCLA - Shows impressive quickness and change of direction to help turn speed to power as a rusher. Good depth.    191.  Keaton Bills, G, 6’5 320 Lbs, Utah - Cerebral player, quick to react to twists and stunts up front. Very good depth.
