What is the most unbreakable record in sports?

Recommended Posts

I think any record involving offense or simply playing is breakable because sports are progressively favoring scoring and player safety.

So consecutive starts (Favre, Ripken), consecutive games with scores/hits (Jordan/DiMaggio), career points (Gretzky/Abdul-Jabbar), career stats (Rice/Emmitt), and career wins will all be in danger in the future.

I think defensive records will be increasingly more difficult to break.  Dick "Night Train" Lane intercepting 14 passes in 12 games will probably never be broken.  It's been over a decade since a player had double-digit INTs and that's with 16 games in a season and a more pass-happy NFL now, too.  :woah:

Thats actually where I was leaning.. Emmitt's will never be broken becuase RB's only get like 7 years to play.. and all the sub packages where if you aren't a 3 down back you can forget about it.

Just for fun, I'll provide one for each league

MLB: DiMaggio's 56 consecutive games with a hit

NBA: Bill Russell's 11 championships

NFL: there are a lot to go with here.  Don Shula's 347 victories, Emmitt Smith's career rushing yards, Favre's nearly 300 consecutive starts, and pretty much any Jerry Rice stat all come to mind.

NHL: Gretzky's 2800+ career points...among nearly anything else Gretz did

Second year player, first year starter just got to 50. 55 TD passes is certainly not among the most unbreakable records in sports. Players have gotten close to that and the record itself is just 6 r old.

It's not even the most unbreakable Peyton Manning record. 23 consecutive regular season wins or 7 straight seasons of 12+ wins are going to be harder to break. Or 13 consecutive seasons with at least 25 TDs (Brady is at 10 right now).

this is a good one that probably wont jump to mind for most people right away.  its already stood for a looong time too, and no one has been close lately like you said

modern offensive coaching probably wont allow it unless several weird flukes happen in the same season

Gretzky has lot of unbreakable Records. 8 consecutive MPS, highest +/- in a season(+100), largest margin of victory in a scoring race(+79), most 100+ point seasons(15) or 11 100+ assist seasons (rest of NHL has total of 2 those)..

Back in 1980, Eri Heiden won Olympic gold at speed skating.. at every individual event. 500, 1000, 1500, 5000 and 10000 meters.

50 is far from 56 on average per game IMO, MaHomes had a career year and will never throw for 50 again IMO. Only other QB to throw for 50 is Tom and it was 50 back in 2007.

I agree with all of this.

It's about 0.375 TDs per game more. Not that much. Mahomes had just 163 drives in the regular season (ex. kneel downs at the end of halfs) bc of KCs porous defense. Peyton had 29 more in 2013. KC offense last year scored more points per drive (3.25 vs 2.98) and TDs per drive (0.405 vs 0.370) than DEN in '13. While it's possible he peaked on his 1st year starting, I consider that unlikely and their D won't likely be as bad in future years allowing for more offensive drives and thus chances to score. Trevor Lawrence could also going to be a big factor in breaking that record in few years.

Other QBs have gotten close to PMs record and it's relatively new. That's why I don't think it should belong in same company as some other records which are a lot older and no one has gotten even close to them. Marino had the single season TD record 35 yrs ago and with larger margin to the next guy and it ended up being smashed, though it took a lot of time.

Peytons single season TD record is extremely impressive since he could pretty much throw only ducks at that point.

I'm not sure any record is unbreakable because every record broken was thought to be unbreakable.

Rock..nobody's ever going to average 48 1/2 minutes over an entire season.

What that means is: Wilt played every regular minute of the season and all the overtimes.

That's an unbreakable record

I join the others in saying that the 55 TD's can and probably will be broken.   Mostly because the league is more and more offensive minded.   9 QB's broke the 30 TD mark.   A rookie got 50.  It's a pass happy league now.   While it may stand for several years, it wouldn't be surprising to see it tied or broken.   Heck, if the Colts get a couple WR's who can catch, Luck may come close next season.

Agreed 100% that Cy Young's win record won't touched. Ever.

I wouldn't be surprised if one day Wilt's 100 point game is eclipsed. No easy task but it's possible.

Peyton's TD record is another story. With the way today's game is played and all of the rule changes over the years, this record is bound to fall sooner than later IMO.

For whatever reason, this record is the one I hope is broken. Although unlikely, it would be very exciting to follow. The way the game is played now with all of the relief pitching specialist and defensive shifts, this record is getting more and more difficult to imagine being broken. I also think we may never see another .400 hitter in the major leagues for the same reasons.

UCLA Men's Basketball. 7 Consecutive national championship titles from 1967-1973. I just don't ever see that happening in the day and age we are now.

John Wooden and Sam Gilbert.

Do your own research.

May surprise you.

Celtics won 8 straight Championships from 1959-1966. That will never happen again in the NBA.

I am pretty confident that nobody will score 100 in a game like Wilt did either.

Emmitt Smith's rushing yard record of 18,355 will never be broken. Most teams do RB by committee now days and there isn't anybody that is durable as he was playing 15 seasons.

Nobody will beat CY Young's win total of 511 as I posted above.

You guys have a point about Peyton's passing TD record of 55 in 1 season, that may be broken but I will believe it when I see it. Mahomes will not come close to 50 this upcoming season. I see him around 40 like Luck. I will say this nobody will win more than 5 League MVP's like Peyton did. That will not be broken.

Ah. Sad to say but I’m actually not surprised.  Anyone with large amounts of cash can nearly buy whatever they want. Even college admission apparently...

Yeah with today's NCAA rules some of  those championships would be vacated.

Follow me here...the Pacers 3 ABA Championships will never be broken :)

I agree on the Cy Young win total and Dimaggio's hit streak is pretty safe, but not unbreakable...someday, someone will break it.

Chamberlain's 48.5 minutes per game average is also very safe and will not be broken.

With the new NFL, Emmit Smith should feel safe with his rushing record.   Although I always felt like it he shouldn't brag about it.   Sanders would have it easily if the Lions were not so poorly run.

Personally I rank Sanders and Payton ahead of Smith.

Neither one of them had near the talented blockers that Smith had.

    • Mine was small but wonderful
    • They make a compelling argument. The Colts often are overlooked for awards but that broke loose with our two winners 2 years agp, though Leonard still got left out of the Pro Bowl.  The Washington team isn't all that popular with the NFL either so it will be interesting though unfortunate that some teams are not the Cowboys for example. Jones brings in the money on TV deals which gives the Cowboys and their mega market disproportionate attention, for example and the NFL least by extension of massive markets. Meanwhile Indy is third in market smallness I think ahead of NO and GB. (Maybe Jax and one or two others, can't recall off memory).  Let's hope the deserving guy wins.
    • Has he really done anything? I know lots were very high on his ceiling when in Miami but he hasn’t seemed to make his name a regular on any highlight shows at all unless I’ve missed it, which is entirely possible since I only follow this team through the forum and a little bleacher report and Kevin Bowen’s pod.
    • I hope you guys win the division too.
    • for sure with the CB. Will Rock ever get to the level of a lock down cb like they hoped for or just a filler that does just enough? Also, what’s the thought on X Rhodes, what’s he gonna cost to Re-sign? I’d think plenty as he sounds like he has outplayed all the other cb’s on the team.     this off-season will be telling for the future. They could Re-sign PR for sure. They could also draft a new guy after trading up in the first to get a guy. If they do that, Eason hasn’t progressed to where we’ve hoped and he will become a back up in the league. They could also trade for Darnold which could also indicate that Eason isn’t progressing well enough. If neither of those things happen this offseason, I think they feel Eason is going to be the guy but they are going the mentor route and will have him ready for late 2021 or the 2022 season. PR signed for one last season and Eason to assume the reigns after that year. I’d rather be able to use that first rd pick on a TE, DE, OT or CB than another QB.  That’s a lot of defensive guys to resign. I’d guess that out of all these, Stewart is #1 priority, then Autry or Houston but doubt both with Rhodes being a close third pick. I just can’t see Walker back unless the other guys get priced out and we have cap to burn. Seeing what Turay has the rest of this season also helps guide the teams direction too. If he shows to be good, we won’t need to draft DE high or look into FA. These are the reasons I dislike using the one year deals, now we have a lot of people who has shown they deserve a roster spot and to be paid. Cant sign them all imho.
