The closest comparison we have to ballard drafting late 1st round was when he picked early 2nd round.  He picked Leonard and Smith.  When Grigson picked early 2nd round, he picked Fleener...

You are comparing a first draft to a second draft.

Grigson's first draft won him the GM of the year. Yes, things went south but his first draft was a huge success. Especially if you remember we were something like 39 million in cap space hades.

At the time the drafting of Fleener and Allen was a success at the time.  The trade to get Hilton ended up being his biggest feat other that picking Luck first and there was no doubt he was going to be #1. One positive thing is when he got fired we were in good cap space.

Ballard's 1st draft was a success but his 2nd might have been one of the best drafts in NFL history.

It won't be his last. The guy knows

how to pull the strings.

I'm a supporter.  Great job so far, but hopefully he's more flexible than some from our past.

Ballard said he wants opponents to "feel" our D-line.  That's great, but unless we have the ability to match scores with elite offenses, every Super Bowl, no one will be feeling us.  Instead, we'll be sitting at home feeling ourselves.

Ummmm no. Pressure the QB and

everything falls into place on defense. Control the offensive line

and the running game flourishes, then play action pass comes into play.

Gotta control the trenches, Ballard understands this.

You can control every trench like it's France circa 1917, but with Belichick, Peyton, McVay, Reid and their 2019 offenses, you better match scores and keep up, otherwise you will be back on the bus faster than we were in KC.

How can a team score if there are no holes for the RB to run through

or the pocket collapses for the QB. All top QB's struggle with pressure.

Tell that to the 1985 Bears.  Defense does win the big games.

Yes and no.. Any QB is going to prefer not being pressured obviously. But the increasing athleticism and escapility of QBs is making it harder to get positive outcomes on D even when you do get pressure.

It also matters how many men you’re having to send to get pressure, Brady and Manning put food on the table identifying blitzes and carving them up. Especially off the edge.

I guess it depends on how you define “feel” too. Are we saying it’s consistently getting hurries/pressures from both the interior and edge, or maybe getting more sacks but less consistent pressure per snap.

Not disagreeing with you, just musing outloud.

They don’t take my calls.
