Colts want Adam Vinatieri back (Update) (Merge)

Recommended Posts

I think he has to return and we need to find a kicker to replace him when he does retire. I would rather have Adam back while we search then have someone that we know nothing about.

He's good.  Any kicker can have a bad day.  At age 60 or whatever, he finally came back to the pack.

He is still better than most and a great presence in the locker room.  I'm sure he would be the first to admit when he "loses it" and will do the right thing at that time.

At some point, the end is going to happen. If he comes back, I still say we draft a kicker. Just to have already in the fold and one that can learn under him

You don't carry two kickers on the roster. If you draft a kicker most likely won't go on the practice squad as some other team will grab him

And carry three kickers on the roster next season?

Nah.

How about a compromise where he comes back in a capacity similar to Robert Mathis’ after his playing days were over?

I fully realize the value he brings to the locker room.  But I simply don’t have the confidence in him that I long did.  And that was true prior to the KC debacle.  Maybe Ballard feels differently and, well, his opinion matters everything and mine matters none.

I trust Ballard to make the best decision for the horseshoe.

The guy has been playing an NFL schedule for two decades...I wouldn't be surprised if he would want a few years off that rigorous schedule.

Seems destined for the booth. I bet he could do what Jay Feely does.

They aren't going to carry two kickers

You don't necessarily have to plan to replace a kicker/punter like you plan to replace a QB.  If he comes back and it doesn't work, you can find another kicker, just like Ballard found a good punter in Sanchez.

I don't think people realize how many Cody Parky's there are right now out there. We should want AV back, despite the poor game and his age. He was very good this year, even kicking through a groin injury (use your imagination). I think he can still do it and to be honest, I think he's got the craft down, where as long as he's mentally into it, he's going to be able to do it- within a degree of reason of course, he's clearly closer to the end than not.

They'll bring in a camp leg, like they usually do. If that guy is reasonably good, maybe they can get him on the practice squad.

If he wants to come back sign him and bring him back.  Bring in another kicker to compete and if he clearly wins the job you can trade Adam to an NFC team for a draft pick.

This will probably be his last year in 2019.

I'd love to see him extend the all-time scoring mark even higher.  He played well last year, despite the KC game, so I'm all for him returning for another year.

Any kicker good enough to hold on the PS is likely going to be signed by another team by seasons end. When you are looking at FA kickers that’s the first place you start.

The situation with him in essence being there waitibg ro rakw over wlhkd make him even ale him even more likely to get plucked by another team. That’s essentially saying “he’s worth a roster spot the second Vinny is gone.”

Those usually don't last. The Panthers for example tried to stash Butker on their practice squad but the Chiefs(a team with exceptional special teams coach) snatched him almost immediately. There are way too many teams in kicker purgatory every year. If they see you are using a roster spot(even if on the practice squad) for additional kicker they will know he's good and they will sign him.

You aren't insinuating that Punters do not "kick" the ball are you?  lol.   Kickers and Punters are both referred to as kicking "specialists" often enough that most anyone who gives it more than a seconds thought knows what someone means when they refer to teams almost universally carrying 2 kickers.....  c'mon maaan

He comes back for the same money, I take him back in a second.  Last game was a total fluke.  The only negative is his health.  You're not going to get more healthy with age.

I want him to play as long as he is willing and able.

I said a while back, he's earned enough goodwill in my book, I'd keep him until he proves he doesn't belong.  You're playing a little russian roulette the longer you keep him on the field, but still...One of the few guys I've ever said that about and fully acknowledge that's not smart team management.  Meh, that's why I'm not in an NFL's FO.  Still don't care lol.

Well since we are talking about Vinny, I was simply Speaking in the since of FGs as that’s all he does now

Hard to see them keeping a kicker on the practice squad.

REALLY hard to see them keeping an understudy on the active roster.

There is no trade market for a 46 / 47 year old kicker.

A: you dont do that to AV.

B: Most likely, his contract will include a no-trade clause.

At the end of training camp there could be.  Especially if he has a decent camp and just lost out in the competition.  Kickers get turned over a lot during the season.  A team not happy with their kicking situation to start just might give up a late pick.  You never know.

Irsay isn't going to trade him.  He is either our kicker or they let him walk

Wow, there's just no trade you're not willing to make.

And we're certainly NOT trading AV after we re-sign him.     Not even for a draft pick.     Chris Ballard is not going to disrespect him like that.       If AV wants to keep going and CB wants him back,  then what is the problem --- exactly?!?

I don't know about "B"....      but "A" is 100 percent correct.       Nailed it!

I know letting him walk sounds better than cutting him.  Makes the you feel better.  I know.

It's not just "now"....   it's been at least 7 years...    at least since I've been a Colts fan.

Sanchez does kick-offs now.     Before him it was Patty Mac.

Been a long time since AV did kick-offs.

    • No doubt....   Butler makes plenty of NFL-level catches.   I've seen several of his tapes and they're full of them.   That's why I fell in love with him.   But those are his high-lite tapes.    I'd love someone to put together a montage of his drops.   Let's see the worst of him.     Zierlein made reference of "drop after drop after drop."     But I had no idea it was at 16%.   Yikes!   I know Ballard and Reich aren't afraid of some drops....   but at some point,  one would think they would no longer be acceptable?
    • Goodness graciouis....   this poster has no idea that he contridicted himself between the first sentence and the last sentence.   First,  the concept of non-elite corners comes from Ballard.   It's just the posters who are repeating it over and over to those who continue to want to spend a first round pick on one.   And then,  you note in your last sentence that good zone corners can be found in later rounds.   Thanks for proving Ballard's point....   even though that was never your intention.
    • Yeah... I'm on the record that I think drops are overrated by fans but 16%(if true) is truly worrying stat. I honestly haven't seen his hands being a problem on tape. He had some concentration drops, but he does well attacking the football, high pointing it, catching it away from his body. 16% though... wow! I guess I have to rewatch his games. That's like every 6th pass should be a drop.    About Mitchell... I have no idea how to evaluate those things, that's why I'm resigning myself to just watching the tape and leaving the intel to the people with the resources.    edit: just watched his Texas tape again:     He has one drop at 5:55, but just look at how many great NFL-type catches he had before that. I will keep watching other film, but so far I still think the playmaking ability is great and if I had to have 1 drop every game like this one for performances like this, I'm OK with it. And this is not even a particularly excellent game for him. It's run of the mill 99 yard game where his QB was under pressure and running for his life for most of it.
    • Lol the o ly thing worse than being hated by the media is being loved by the media.
    • “CoCorners,,People need to stop preaching this deal about how a 4-3 zone defense doesn’t need elite corners like it’s the gospel. I hear the same narratives over and over again. “good zone corners can be found in the middle rounds, our old 4-3  never had elite corners
