Coach of the year?

Recommended Posts

Seems like Frank Reich should be a lock for this. He took a team that was predicted to be one of the worst in the NFL and has them on the cusp of a playoff berth. I am guessing it will end up being Matt Nagy, McVay, or one of the other coaches the media is currently in love with, but I don't think anyone has done a better job than coach Reich and his staff.

He deserves it, but probably won't win it for the reasons you mentioned.  I'm guessing Nagy is a lock since the Bears won the division.  I'm fine with that and happy for that organization.  Glad to see them winning again.

I totally disagree.   He should be in the conversation, but certainly not a "lock".

Nagy, McVay, Reid, Carrol, Reich, Marvin Lewis and others all have decent arguments for the awards.   Personally, I don't think the awards should ever go to a team that misses the playoffs.

Marvin Lewis? In the conversation for coach of the year? I can't say I agree with that one, but I agree that Reich isn't a lock for it even though he's had an impressive year.

Ha ha.   I just slipped Lewis in to see if people were paying attention.   He should have been fired years ago.

If Nagy gets it, it will be just as deserving.  It's hard to see it as unfair.  Both guys are first year coaches.  Both guys have had impressive one year turnarounds.  I'd probably argue the Nagy has a better resume, if for no other reason than he won the division and the Colts need help to make the playoffs since we can't win the division at this point.  And if the season were over today, Nagy's going from 5 wins to 10 is better than the Colts going from 4 wins to 8.  Obviously the Colts could close that gap depending on how the last 2 games go, but it's trending toward Nagy at the moment.  Those are the two things that will probably attract voters to Nagy - and both are legitimate considerations.

Ehhhh. No.

We started 1-5. We’re now 8-6, but being honest here he has a huge hand in 4 of those losses. The Eagles game was ugly from a coaching standpoint. The Texans game now is bigger every week. Sure, he wanted to use that to instill a culture in his team, but in the case for coach of the year that hurts him. Yeah he Jets loss was ugly. That is not a team that should have dominated us the way they did that day.

Finally the Jags loss was a head scratcher. Our offense riding hard and high like they had been to that point coming in and laying an egg? When he runs the offense? Nah.

He’s a huge upgrade over Pagano, but this season hasn’t been without its hard to digest moments.

    • Not if we re-sign AC to a multi-year contract.   And I think there’s better than a 50-50 chance of doing that.
    • They have a replacement in Okafor for Davis. Both him and Randle played well down the stretch while Davis was out. Randle is a guy I would potentially look at as well. With NO obviously going after Zion, Randle has already turned down his player option and is a FA. If Thad turns is no longer and option, I think Randle would be a good fill in at PF for the Pacers. 24 years old and averaged 21 and 9 playing off the bench half of the year last year.    It would be nice to unload McDermitt's contract and put that extra 7.5M/yr elsewhere.    As I said earlier in the thread, we have quite a few holes to fill on a capped budget and I wouldn't be surprised if some of these guys (Thad, Bogy, CJ) decline offers from the Pacers and move on.
    • I think you will see another WR drafted....or a TE. Funchess will likely be gone...Hilton is a year older. Even if Cain and Campbell are both what they hoped for...there is still room to develop another Day Two pick at the position. We will see though.
    • Agree. It's just the logic that gets me. It's wishful thinking (or homerism) to think that Foles doesn't impvoe a Blake Bortles-led offense.   And had Luck not come back healthy...I would bet there is a pretty decent chance that Foles is a Colt. But I am grateful that he did.
    • Interesting. The Colts are #1...but the LAR are #2. Two distinct roster building styles.   I think SF gets a bit slighted here. They have a great HC and a young QB who was lighting it up before getting hurt. He should be able to return just fine...and they have a ton of young talent and cap space.   Honestly, NO has a lot of young talent..but an older QB.   "Set up for the future" doesn't really mean as much in the NFL as it does other sports...unless you are Patriots (and the future doesn't really seem to matter). But it's a better place to be than not.
