OVERVIEW

Maulet was an all-state soccer player, an all-district punter, and a cornerback while in high school. His footwork will be more coveted by NFL scouts in the secondary than on special teams, however. Maulet began his collegiate career at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, earning second-team all-Mississippi junior college notice as a sophomore (five interceptions, 20 pass breakups) and starting all nine games as a freshman (37 tackles, one INT). He played in all 13 games for Memphis after joining the team in 2015, starting eight games, making 38 tackles, intercepting two passes and leading the team with seven pass breakups. Maulet became a defensive team leader for the Tigers in 2016, racking up 73 stops, 7.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, and a team-leading 13 pass breakups. He had 11 tackles and three sacks against Western Kentucky in the Boca Raton Bowl.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

 Showed immense improvement in coverage from last year to now. Understands speed limitations and does a better job of protecting himself. Has decent press mechanics. Can match receivers across the field out of their release. Reads quarterback and shadows his eyes from zone. Always looking to creep on throws underneath when playing off. Good arm length and hand size for his frame. Explosive leaper. Can challenge and defeat much taller receivers in defending the high-point throw. Takes a direct line to the ball in challenging the catch. Good hand-eye coordination helps him swipes throws away. Shows some grit as a tackler.

WEAKNESSES

 Has a history of getting torched on the deep throw. Struggles with acceleration after opening hips to sprint with receivers down the field. Allows insurmountable separation if he's not diligent in his retreat. Aggressive, ball-hawking style underneath opens him to damage over the top. Can be big-boyed in space by bigger targets. Shows slight delay in reaction quickness when attempting to break on the ball from a backpedal or shuffle.

BOTTOM LINE

 Maulet?s size will require him to move inside to the slot where his athleticism and ball skills are a plus. While Maulet was a much better football player this season and clearly understood how to play his position better, he will need to run well at the combine for teams to consider drafting him. He should post some athletic numbers, but since he?s just 5-foot-9, he needs to prove that he can hit a functional top speed.

It's a head scratcher having 2 CB's that small especially considering Ballard's CB profile. I was a fan of K. Moore when we brought him in. He had tore up NE's training camp turning a lot of heads. The buzz he created with the Pats and his pre draft numbers 6.86 3 cone, a 40.5 inch vertical, 10'7" broad jump and a 4.4 forty made him an interesting addition.

 

I don't know much about Maulet except his size. Ballard must see something to put in a waiver claim. It sounds like  NO hoped he'd slide through the wire. They cut him to make room for LB Biegel. We are going to have our version of the Smurfs. It'll be interesting how it plays out.
