Randy Gegory reinstated... for now

After missing most of 2016, and all of 2017, Randy Gregory is trying to get back on the field again.  The NFL has conditionally reinstated him for 2018 -

"Gregory is allowed to join the Cowboys at training camp and participate in meetings, conditioning work and similar activities, but is not permitted to participate in practices and games until the league can confirm Gregory is complying with the terms of his reinstatement. This includes confirming arrangements regarding Gregory's clinical resources in Dallas."

No doubt consistent and frequent drug tests will be administered as well.  I hope he can avoid testing positive on them (can be tested up to 10 times per month), but his history isn't very convincing.  It takes a lot of effort to prove to be deserving of reinstatement from NFL banishment from drug use, and it would be a shame to see him slip and miss another season and have to work so hard to get clean for yet another reinstatement (minimum 1 year before he can apply) from yet another lifetime ban. Good luck Randy, hoping for you... but...

Yes marijuana is much more lenient in punishment in the NFL than other substances now, but once caught a single time (for any banned substance) in drug testing, they are 'under a testing microscope' for the rest of their NFL career.  If a player has never been previously caught for substances of abuse, testing for those (not PES / PED's) stop once the first games are played.  So a player can use MJ during the season for pain and not worry about being fined/suspended, if they have never tested positive before.  The players and kids getting caught in the off season are foolish, especially those caught at the combine, or at OTA's / training camp.  You know the NFL will be there and testing then.  And once caught (for anything banned), can get tested all season long up to 10 times a month, meaning you have essentially forfeited your ability to use MJ during the season without a possibility of a penalty.

This is a case of more than being punished for casual use, which is subject to rational debate.  This is a young man who is addicted to a powerful sedative.  Its in the same arena as any pain masking drug or substance like alcohol or pain killers.  All substances that can be used for pain killers are in the same clinical family.  They limit productivity and overall health, eventually.  Every employer has the right, even the responsibility to its company and coworkers, to have a policy that segregates these severe cases from the rest of the employees.  So many look at this problem as a simple political, moral, or recreational personal choice debate when it really falls into the same clinical family as opioid or alcohol abuse.  The practice should be heavily discouraged and the employee provided assistance to recover, as long as they are willing, IMO.
