Bashaud Breeland leaves Indy without deal

As much as many of us thought the signing of Breeland or one of the other FA defensive backs made sense it's looking more and more like that that ship has probably sailed.  Ballard is probably going to wait for cut down day to make any future moves.   But if he really has interest in any of them he might want to move pretty quickly.

Well.....      CRAP!!

I was hoping for a late off-season surprise.    This one makes so much sense.   I confess I’m disappointed.

Oh well...    In Ballard I trust.   But I sure hope someone in the media asks him about it.   I’d love to read his explanation.

Disappointed? Really?

Ballard said he wasn't going to over spend in FA. The man is doing what he said. He has a plan.

Ballard knows how to build a team more than we know.

You couldn’t even read one more sentence?

I literally wrote:  Oh well...  in Ballard I trust.

Just one more sentence and you’d have realized your post wasn’t necessary....

But it’s cute to see you pretend to like and agree with Ballard.    It’s not believable but it is cute......

Ok...   now we have new tweets saying we have some level of interest.   This is different from the tweets that started the thread and listed a couple of teams and the Colts were NOT one of them.  Now apparently we are.

This is encouraging.

I hope Ballard makes it clear that Breeland should NOT sign with another team before he visits the Colts and lets us make a new pitch.

It’s now back on our radar.   Good for us.    Still looking for a solid signing or two (also safety) now that camp has started.

There is an attitude that vets get....I've made my hay, I want to get. And they deserve it. If Ballard doesn't move...its likely that we are not ready to pay for "That" guy yet. Fans so want this year to be all good. But moves to make that happen this season might cost a bit of the future.

I trust in this GM.

I trust in this GM.

This will be his 2nd visit with Indy so that’s a good sign

Colts have the money, Ballard just doesn’t believe in paying people anything just cause they’re asking for it. He has a price tag in mind, you either sign for it or you go somewhere else. He’s not gonna throw the bag at players who don’t deserve it

There are so many factors that make up a decision like this. Clearly we must have left Bashaud with some type of information that we are interested if we can agree on the conditions. Could have been fully healed, maybe he perform some tests or work out, money differences etc. It would seem that perhaps some of those conditions have been met and he is coming back. Given nobody signed him...and now he has a bunch of visits again I would say that he wasn't fully healed when he went to all these teams a few months ago. Now that he is he is following up on the contract conversations and we should see some action. It makes a lot of sense to not sign an unhealthy guy. I'm sure if he does or doesn't end up with us Ballard has turned that stone and looked in every nuck and cranny to determine if it was in the best interest for the team. On the surface just based on his play the last few years and what we have on the team and developing. I think he would be a nice addition. We have a lot of young guys but I'm not sure they will all be ready to perform when the lights come on. Also given how common injuries are to a secondary...I would like the depth and maybe even leadership if he is capable to bring to the squad. We will see!

I agree, second visits mean a great deal as long as he isn't playing basketball and not talking to coaches

Ya' know...now that you bring that up again...just wondering if they were secretly taping him to see how he moved while playing bball?  You can work him out without actually working him out.

Not saying he was playing all out while playing, but if he showed signs of favoring the foot or

likewise that would give some insight to his range and ability to play on it.

Just thinking out loud here.  Feel free to shut my mind, lol.

any idea as to when this week he's visiting?

I haven't heard anything specific as to his visit with the Colts...

but I read he 's scheduled to meet with Cleveland on Friday.

which is interesting since the Browns have the largest amount of cap space, and Colts are second across the league.

The Colts truly have a wide open situation at CB. There are favorites to start, of course, but I have to believe that a healthy Breeland gets one of the two starting slots. I'm not sure the Browns' situation gives him as much opportunity. It comes down to $, yes, but also which team sees him as a true starter and not a backup. A team seeing him as a starter will offer more than one seeing him as strong depth. I'm betting on the Colts.

I think if he doesn't sign with the Chiefs he will sign with us.   I can't see him signing with the Browns as much because they will most likely be starting Denzel Ward on one end and then on the other end you've got EJ Gaines.  If you bring in Breeland I assume that would mean Ward would either be a backup or maybe move into the nickel.  I don't think they would bring Breeland in to play over Gaines and I think they have every intention of starting Denzel Ward.

I think you're right.  If he gets out of KC I think he signs with us tomorrow.

    • that’s simplifying something that is far from being simple…    if no one is putting pressure up front, professional receivers are going to get open regardless of the coverage… and the top qb’s are going to pick it apart.
    • we risk losing Paye and company in the next year or two… Right?
    • Thats easy. Having great coverage. If noone is open the rush will get there.    Or, I wish we blitzed more like Spaignola does as QB's are considerably less accurate under duress.    The best offenses have QB's that get rid of the ball quickly which negates to a degree the pass rush.  Scholars here are buzzing madly about pressures. Joey Bosa had a crazy number of pressures but how many resulted in incompletions? He had 2 more sacks than Kwity and played roughly 175 more snaps.  Detroit's Hutchinson, in their playoff loss, had no pressures, no sacks, and 1 tackle as I recall. And a heckuva player. Truth is you better have really good ability at both, including highly intelligent fast players in the back seven.
    • Any news on the attempted talks with Blackmon?   Worst case scenario:  we don't sign Blackmon, or any other safety FA, miss out on what few guys there are in this very non-deep safety draft, and wind up going into the season with Cross and Thomas as our best two guys.  Ewwww.
    • My follow up is about what you think is the most cost-efficient way to acquire the needed players to make the defense work as designed.    As to your point about risk, I guess... If you think specific DE prospects just aren't that good, that's one thing. I'm definitely against propping up a prospect just because he plays a position of perceived need. But I would think that if the Colts take a DE at #15, they see him as a potential game changing pass rusher, and the expectation is for him to exceed what the guys on the roster have shown so far. No one can know for sure, but that's the nature of the draft.   At corner, I just think that a fundamental reason why the Colts prefer their zone heavy scheme is because it's easier to find corners who can excel at zone coverage. So there's less of a premium on the position in this scheme, and that's by design. I also don't think the top 4-5 corners in this class fit Ballard's preferred profile. (Side point: This is not conventional thinking, but I think the order of importance in this defense is 3T, Edge, Will, FS, then CB. I think the objective is to take away big plays, funnel routes to the middle, and have rangy playmakers at Will and FS who can create turnovers. I'm not saying that's how I would build a defense, but I think that's the intention. Which also influences my thinking on Ballard's preferences in the draft.)    The scheme element doesn't necessarily apply at WR, but I think the value at WR favors taking one on Day 2, and I think Ballard's appetite for second round WRs is well established. I'd be open to drafting a WR at #15, but I don't think the Colts will do it.   So if I was an oddsmaker, I'd favor the Colts going DE or DT at #15, just based on how I think the top of the draft will fall, and the players available. I think most fans prefer corner or WR, mostly because of perceived need, but I don't see that happening. Nothing would shock me, though.
