Question about Quenton

Recommended Posts

I watched a ton of film on this kid and I honestly can't recall him ever being man-handled by a defender. He seems to always keep his guy in place or just runs right through the guy. Every play I watched him and another offensive lineman double team someone, they completely taken the defender out of the play. Him and Kelly together is going to be fun to watch.

Is there any video of someone simply getting the better of Nelson?

The only one I remember was Nelson versus Chubb and it wasn't so much Chubb as it looked like Nelson slipped a bit.

I saw some of Nelson/McGlinchey vs Chubb. McGlinchey vs Chubb was fun to watch but whenever they had Nelson help with the double team, Chubb couldn't do anything at all. I feel like McGlinchey would be better off at RT in the NFL.

I watched a lot of tape on him too, including some complete game tapes, and I sure didn't see anyone get the better of him. Once in a while, you'll see a guy playing off of his block and making a tackle on a RB after a short gain, but even that is rare. AS CSM just said, that one play against Chubb looked like a slip, and that's gonna happen. Most of the guys he blocks stay blocked -- or planted. This kid is something special.

Man, Nelson sure did open up some nice holes in that clip. He mainly went against the opposing DT's or swung to the outside to blow a block (Which he's exceptional at doing) He's 6'5 and around 330 already as a rookie, which is very promising since I don't think he will need to bulk up to dominate NFL Defensive Linemen. The more I watch of him the more I fall in love with the guy and he's already NFL ready.

What jumps off the tape at you is how Nelson never eases up on his assignment. Even when the play is going to the other side, or has gone past him, he keeps imposing his will on the defender, all the way to the whistle. That has to be frustrating and demoralizing for a defender to have to face that all day.

I like how at 0:07 of the video, right off the bat you see Quenton actually whiff when he tries to get his hands on the interior DLineman, but even though he misses with his hands, he trips the guy then falls backward and just sits on him.  That's good Reverse TBagging technique.

NOBODY gets the better of Quenton Nelson.  Or puts him in a corner.

Love clip #2.  Now THAT is superior field awareness!  I don't know that I have ever seen a lineman pick up a blitz that deep.

Really interested to see how he does this year because next year (barring injury this year) he is going to be even BETTER!

Who else watched these over and over again?

RIP #4, whoever you were.

First one looks like some sort of WWE move.

Second one is great mental awareness.

Luck should feel a lot more comfortable in the pocket with this man in front of him.

Gosh damn clip #2 is just vicious .... #1 is good as well but holy crap I’m excited now. I didn’t. Are if we had gotten Chubb or Nelson but I think we got the better pick!

He is field smart. He just looks to make a play every snap.

One scouting video I watched explained that Nelson practices martial arts.... and that it helped his balance, agility and hand striking.

It definitely shows as he threw that defender around like a sack of potatoes.

Those two highlights show why Nelson was rated so highly.  A lot of his run blocking gets on the highlight reel because let's face it that's more exciting then pass blocking.  But pass blocking is obviously extremely important and Nelson is great at both.

Put on the Miami tape. RJ McIntosh got the better of him several times, but overall even in this blowout he was dominating his matchups.

Wasn't just RJ that got the better of him.  This game is concerning IMO.  He held his own often but was also beaten a fair share.  Everyone loved to talk about his ability to pull which is demonstrated several times in this game, but he rarely makes a meaningful block on the LB's.  Several of the the LB's are NFL-type guys with the starting 3 with the potential to go early in the 2019 draft, but that's hardly comforting.

He was a dominant piece in college, hope he's the same for the Colts

Yes - that block where he picked up the 2nd guy coming in from the right side was amazing.  No idea how he saw that coming.

And the body slam.  Wow.

If he performs like this on a regular basis in the NFL he is definitely worth the #6 pick in my mind.

It all starts up front.

Can't wait to see him dominate JJ Watt :)

I saw a hilight video of vita vea (sp?) where he ran past (thru?) nelson and mcglinchy like they were stuck in cement.

the only one i saw tho.

i like how nelson goes a lil past wistle, then stops, turns, and walks back to huddle.  defenders  look at him like "sheesh buddy" but they dont dare speak cuz he's comin right back next play.  Defenders be like " hey Q, can i pull your car around for ya after the game?"

Washington hasn't played vs Notre Dame in the last 3 years AFAIK. Maybe you mistake him with someone else? Chubb had a rep vs Nelson where he caught him off balance on a stunt inside and threw him to the side.

Yeah, this was the only questionable one. even then like you said it looked like he slipped. I seriously wish we would have drafted Notre Dame's Josh Adams as well. That kid can ball. He is patient when it comes to waiting for the hole to open and when it does, he's already in the secondary. The eagles got them selves a good RB duo with him and Penny.

    • I knew I had a favorite last year, but I thought I would be good with whoever the Colts picked... and this was until the odds for the Colts picking Levis hit -4000 or something of the sort about half an hour before the draft and my heart completely dropped. In a way I'm happy the odds-makers completely missed on this one... it showed me how I really felt about those players and made me even more appreciative for us drafting Richardson an hour later.    So... you would be good with any of them... but who do you REALLY want?    On your question... if I had to guess, most Colts fans haven't watched this QB draft extensively. I know I haven't. So his statistical profile doesn't scream 1st rounder so... possibly why not many people really like him.
    • My sleepers: (meaning, the kind of players coaches would like to have, more than what consensus big board gives credit to them. Some of them might need couple of years to attain their high potential, if drafted into suitable coaching environment, so a lot depends on that. Some of them have injury concerns too).   Most of them are high IQ players or high-effort, high-motor players - two traits I look for from the Drafted players, list is long but I like these guys.. gonna be interesting to see where they land and how it works out for them in long run.    Payton Wilson, LB, NC State Caelen Carson, CB, Wake Forest Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale Maason Smith, IDL, LSU Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College Max Melton, CB, Rutgers Zak Zinter, OG, Michigan Bucky Irving, RB, Oregon Khyree Jackson, CB Oregon Dylan McMahon, C, NC State (good fit for Browns)  Tykee Smith, SAF, Georgia Ainias Smith, WR, Texas A&M Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame Michael Barrett, LB Michigan Malachi Corley, WR, Western Kentucky Beaux Limmer, IOL, Arkansas   Kamren Kinchens, S, Miami McKinnley Jackson, IDL, Texas A&M Kalen King, CB, Penn State Justin Eboigbe, IDL, Alabama    Jacob Cowing, WR, Arizona Beau Brade, SAF, Maryland Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville Jalyx Hunt, EDGE, Houston Christian (I'm hoping for day 3 Vikings pickup, as Flores could work wonders with him)  Jaheim Bell, TE, Florida State Brennan Jackson, EDGE, Washington State  Delmar Glaze, OT, Maryland Myles Cole, EDGE, Texas Tech Kristian Boyd, DT, Northern Iowa Javontae Jean-Baptiste, DL, Notre Dame Jordan Magee, LB, Temple Myles Harden, CB, South Dakota Jalen Green, EDGE, James Madison (UDFA Target prospect)  Trey Taylor, S, Air Force (UDFA prospect) Eyabi Okie-Anoma, EDGE, Charlotte Qwan'tez Stiggers, CB, Toronto  Sundiata Anderson, EDGE, Grambling State  Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State (Special Teams, Returner)  Emani Bailey, RB, TCU   As for Vikings, I don't wanna rush to draft QB if the team isn't confident in the guys they could move up in draft range, and I'd like to just draft impact players that build the roster at this point.   Build the team, draft a franchise QB at right time, don't rush and ruin years trying to make someone work out in the NFL.
    • If you are relying upon history, does accuracy matter?  I think the reason Smith ended up at RT is because the coaches tried him there out of necessity and he played well, and stayed there due to the coaches wishes.  I don't think that FO guys had much to say about it, because Smith was in fact drafted to be a G, not the RT.  Ballard's own words after day 2 of that draft was that they drafted Smith a bit higher than they had him ranked, because he was the "last remaining starting caliber G on the board".   So it does fit that Smith was not drafted by Ballard or the FO to be a RT...in part because of the measurables and arm length.   Also directing this response to @Matthew Gilbert
    • Same. And that's because over time that level of depth eventually decays.
    • I don't think players like Davis (and especially Bryan, who I don't think will make the final 53) should impact our draft strategy at all. Not even a little bit. If we like Byron Murphy, figure out what to do with those other guys later. The other versatile guys you mention don't scratch the itch the way Murphy would be expected to -- he should be looked at as a disruptive 3T who plays there every down, not a matchup guy or passing downs guy.    If anything, maybe it's the other way around. The Colts already had a feel for the DTs in draft class and knew they wouldn't get what they want in the draft, so they addressed the position in free agency. And after this weekend, that might help people better understand the strategy at DB and WR...    The bolded really gets at the heart of it. I like Murphy, but I'm not offering him as a great player that you just have to take a chance on. But when it comes to draft strategy, I think taking the best players is the way to go. I'm directly opposed to needs-based drafting, and to passing on a really good prospect because you have backup level veterans already on the roster.
