2018 - 2019 Indiana Pacers and everything NBA thread

I had meant to ask you guys a bit if you remember how long it took Paul George to regain form after his gruesome injury years back. I remember it was similar to Haywards. But PG was younger and I think he is a more athletic guy.

Did he ever look the same to you guys again or did little things change a bit?

I worry about Gordon since not only is bringing him back a challenge but he still has ankle pain and soreness he has to play through for a while he was told. And he was simply awful in some games this year. He has had a few good games and is better on D then I thought. But sometimes I just worry.....

It wasn't the refs at all last night.

What it really breaks down to with the Dipo 3 at the end is the Pacers rushed it down the court so the Celtics would be in transition and would be unable to organize their unit to put Smart on Dipo. They wanted to catch Irving on Dipo which they did and burn him. Smart had a MONSTER game defensively and Irving is clearly no Marcus Smart on defense lol. Irving wasn't supposed to be on Dipo but somehow was and Brad was yelling something on the sideline to Kyrie but it was too late.

Normally at end of Celtics games in those situations Stevens likes to have a time out or hopes the opponent calls one so they can substitute Smart over Irving in for D and vice versa for O with Irving over Smart if it's the other way around.

Pacers know the Celtics well enough by now that they seriously did get them with their pants down.

Thats the luck of the draw with top teams and close endings. Just like last year too with the game in Indy when Rozier stole the inbounds pass then dunked it with seconds left. Thats the game ending that made poor oldunclemark have to go lie down for the night.

Stevens just basically says at the end of these sorts of games that one team made one more big play then the other.

Don't think the refs were a factor in this one since it seemed more about who could out smart the opponent and just come up with that one extra play...

JMO though.

I agree, If Dipo misses at the end, the Celtics fans wouldn't bring up the REFS at all. The Pacers were smart by not calling a Timeout and letting Stevens set up his Defense. We did shoot 16 more FT's which is glaring but the Celtics shot 46 3's. That isn't the C's game IMO, they aren't the Warriors or Rockets. They are more about Defense and getting the higher % shot. That is how the Pacers play too more like the Celtics. Hayward was 0-5 from 3 as well.

I noticed after PG's injury he took nights off during the Regular Season. He didn't drive as much to the basket either. He still was a beast in the 2016 and 2017 Playoffs for us though. After his injury, IMO he paced himself. We had Toronto beat in 2016 (took them 7) and every game vs the Cavs was close in 2017 in Round 1.

Where is Gordon from Utah who used to drive to the basket all the time? Sigh.......

I admit yeah the 3 point crap with the C's is getting bad. We'll see if they stop it since I heard it's a new offense. I mean even BAYNES has been taking a lot of 3's. And he's a center.....

I agree about getting the higher % shot too, thats why ball movement has been poor as well.

Honestly if it were up to me and it isn't, all the big shots would go to Kyrie and Tatum, period.....that would be my main scoring duo.

I am not sure Hayward will ever be the same, it did take PG a full season before he looked like his oldself (sort of his oldself) and even then he still didn't drive and dunk as usual.

Okay thats what I notice with Gordon. Granted it's only early November and stuff. But compared to him in Utah he lacks serious aggression on offense. He's a smart smart guy and can run an offense, but I notice him taking some awful jump shots too. He's okay on defense at times but at other times I have seen teams attack him this year so far which is painful to watch.

I mean I can't say he might ever get back to this again but geez......

I'll be patient though but it's soooo sad. I mean every move he makes is celebrated almost like an accomplishment.

I am happy Pacers fans did give Gordon and Brad a pretty good round of applause though at the game.

I know since the injury Gordon has been in contact a lot with PG. And I know Stevens had contacted Frank Vogel too.

Sorry didn't mean to hog up the thread with Celtics stuff.  lmao

But man thats sad! It did most say take PG a full season. And then like you said he didn't dunk and drive as much.

Part of me wonders if it's a mental thing? I am slightly fascinated.

Combine him working himself back into game shape, trusting his leg, and to me the most important thing....he doesn’t know what his role is. Remember he played like 5 mins last year. He is trying to fit in and figure out what the team needs from him. He sat and watched Tatum basically take on the role they brought him in for. He was meant to be the second option after Irving and now he is an option behind Irving, Tatum, Horford, maybe Rozier and maybe Smart at times...guy just doesn’t know his role and is trying to get his timing and legs back. Imo Celtics may just have too many options and may be better off in the long run moving him and saving that cap space for re-signing other guys now that Lebron is in the West. He will get better but he may never be that Robin to Batman ever again. I’d trade you Myles for him lol! He will bounce back.

No way would I trade Turner for Hayward, Turner is a Defensive machine and just had 6 Blocks the other night. One of our advantages is we have the Big's in Turner and Sabonis. Bogdanovic is a better player than Hayward is right now.

I look to our future. I think Heyward will bounce back by the end of the year...and he will get back to being special on a team that asks him to handle the ball more and be the man. Right now he is just lost in the shuffle of so many stars over there. I like Turner...he is the better defensive center for sure...but I think Sabonis can be a great starter for us and if we could land that star next to Victor we could find a suitable shot blocker and defender to make up for Myles absence. Now that their salaries are closer a trade would be somewhat doable.

Not a good 4th quarter.   Hope we can get them later this week.  Bummer to lose to a Carmello ruined team.

The Rockets are a good team no matter what this media circus says. They have James Harden back and they are about to start rolling.

However, we had plenty of chances to win this game. Hard fought and I don't mind the loss, but we HAVE to fix this free throw shooting. We can't shoot 60% as a team. That's horrible.

We gave this game away with missed FT's and they made some huge 3's in the 4th Qtr, so credit to them. Houston is still a good team despite what people say. They will win 50 games easily.

No shame losing to the Rockets at all.

Guys, I got to rant. Something is seriously wrong with the Celtics. My gut says it's Gordon Hayward. Kyrie was hot as hell tonight scoring, and Brad has to keep all his guys happy and give minutes to Rozier/Morris etc who kill the momentum.

Gordon is just like, utterly USELESS as a starter, but he's Brad's boy.

Rozier doesn't even want to pass the ball to Gordon in the second unit.

Will Danny Ainge over ride Brad this year and make a trade?

OMG.....well at least my husband got the Red Sox so he is still content.

:mindblow:

Do you all want Gordon back in Indy where he belongs?

And I feel so bad, Gordon has been through hell with his injury but he does not contribute A THING as a starter and he holds back Jaylen and Tatum.

Pacers will win the east now. lmao No idea but just saying your team is more fun right now then Boston outside of a few good performances this year by Irving and Tatum.

I would like to have Gordon here as he could start at SF but you guys would probably want Myles and I wouldn't do that trade. Good Big's that can play Defense are hard to come by. Myles along with Sabonis gives us 2 Good Centers which most teams don't have.

-Definitely no shame in losing to Houston, it was a game the Pacers controlled most of the night but lost it in the end. I just seen Denver beat Boston, Denver is 9-1 WOW.

Done. You can have him for free along with a first rounder (Celtics have several from other teams).

He loves the Pacers so much he even passed you the ball to end the game the other night. lmao

Okay just wanted to rant. I feel better now. I mean I don't hate Hayward but my goodness for 30 million dollars it can make me feel a bit icky......thats a lot of money!!!!

Like DGBill was saying, Hayward will probably become Good again but I am not sure he will ever be what he was before his injury is why I wouldn't trade Myles for him. You guys are so stacked at SF that he is disrupting Chemistry right now and that is a problem for Boston.

Thanks...yeah he is thinking out there...not certain. You can't play fast or play your best when you are thinking, worried if you need to shoot, drive, pass. He just doesn't fit into the current team they have. His confidence is down...and clearly Tatum is a star and playing the exact role and position Gordon plays...but better since Gordon is still recovering. He just doesn't fit. I truly believe on just about any other team he would get his feel back and become a great player again. He was never athletically over powering. His great basketball IQ, excellent skills, and feel for the game made him an all-star. Honestly I would love to have him here long term. I think he would fit along nicely with Victor. If we could somehow trade you Bogs and Young or do a 3 team trade where someone else takes our extra pieces and gives you back a good player and we land him I would be thrilled. It may not pay off this year but next....I would be stoked. We have the future cap space to keep him and honestly it would help keep you guys out of the luxury tax when it comes time to re-sign Irving and Rozier and the future with Tatum and Brown. You can't keep them all. I really do think Ainge will move him...he is just waiting for his stock to go up. If you could add a rim protector and/or a 3pt specialist...watch out! I'm keeping an eye on Kyle Korver getting bought out and you guys going after him. A nice specialist off the bench.

The problem might very well be Terry Rozier and not Gordon Hayward.

I think I been too tough on Gordon. He's still trying to feel things out and in my mind I have noticed some of the backups not meshing with him well since they might feel Gordon didn't earn his starting spot after missing the entire season.

One thing about Gordon, despite his lack of impact on the court in stats, he is running the offense well when he is out there. He's a smart smart guy.

It's going to be tough to move Gordon due to how much money his contract is.

Against Denver the other night, the starters actually had a 19 point lead vs. the Nuggets. The bench and weird rotations then blew the game wide open......since Brad has too many issues IMO trying to keep everyone happy and get them out there.

The deep playoff run wasn't the best thing in the world since it gave a lot of guys an agenda.

We'll see how this all works out though.

Yes I would trade Bogdanovic and Young for Hayward if Boston would do that. I do think Hayward will be Good again but not sure he will ever be an All-Star again is all I am saying. Hayward can hit the 3 like Bogdanovic but what I would like in the deal is, he is younger than both Bogs and Young. Guys I wouldn't even think about trading if I was Indy are Dipo, Turner, and Sabonis. Those guys are all real young and Dipo has great chemistry with both. I love the fact we have 2 Good solid Big's.

Well this is a stinker. Nobody is doing anything except Dipo who has 32 Points. Philly has hit 10 3's to our 4 that is the difference. We can't throw it in the ocean tonight . I would love to be able to pick up a player like Korver, a guy who can give you 4 or 5 3's on any given night.

Poor performance.  This looks like a 4 th seed team that gets bumped from the playoffs in the second round.

Myles Turner's last 3 games:

7 points, 4 rebounds

7 points, 2 rebounds

12 points, 6 rebounds

He's averaging 11 points and less than 5 rebounds on the season. That's brutal for an athletic, starting 7-footer.

But but.. he's a good defender. He's still the same guy he was 3 years ago. He's not aggressive enough, and I don't think he'll ever be. His defense is not enough to warrant 18M/yr in my opinion.

I agree.  It's great that he's among the league leaders for blocks per game, but this is an offensive game and you need to put up points, especially if you're getting a big contract.  Points aside, his rebound numbers have been underwhelming his whole career.  I understand he's young, but he's underperforming.  I'm not opposed to him being traded, though I don't think that will happen.  At the very least, he should be benched for Sabonis.

So @BleedBlu8792 and @21isSuperman should we trade Turner? He would have alot of takers IMO. If we trade him, who would you guys target for our needs. What would be some trade possible scenario's?

I was actually looking up possible trade scenarios and no one really stood out to me.  The players I'd want in return probably won't be let go by their teams.  Jimmy Butler would be a nice addition, but he's 29 and has a player option for next year.  Clint Capela would be nice, but I don't see Houston letting him go.  Steven Adams isn't going anywhere.  I couldn't find a good trade partner that was realistic.  I know @Jules was saying Boston's getting a bit crowded and they might actually benefit from trading Hayward (or Rozier), so many something like Hayward and a 1st round pick for Turner, but Hayward's contract is monstrous.  Maybe the best scenario for now is to bench him and give Sabonis starting minutes.  That said, after what Pritchard did with the Paul George trade, I have complete faith in him if he decides to trade Turner. I don't think it will happen because of the contract he was just given, but one can hope.  What do you think?

I still have faith in Turner but he hasn't had a good start. Turner did have 6 Blocks the other night so his Defense has been there. I am loving me some Sabonis about now though. I am like you, I have looked into some trade scenario's as well and couldn't find any good one's either. You are excellent about this stuff and you couldn't even find one either. I do wonder what Boston would give us for Turner, they are loaded at Guards and SF's. If we do trade Turner, Sabonis would have to be the main man for sure at Center.

Friendly Celtics update.

Rozier and Ainge said the reports are untrue and he is not unhappy. But we'll see.

Last night the Celtics were on the brink of losing in Phoenix. In the first half only one starter by halftime scored for real (Irving). C's were down 22 points to a bad Suns team. I saw mystical trades happening before my very eyes....

Then Kyrie went bananas. 39 points, magical shots, stealing balls and he managed to get Jaylen Brown hot again. He even passed the ball to Marcus Morris for the game tying shot to win in OT.

I saw visions again for the first time of "Cleveland Kyrie" when he used to go nuts with Lebron on the court scoring like a crazy person with his jersey untucked. God I love that Kyrie.....

Kyrie said the team will be OK and he will make sure of this.

I won't lie though, Kyrie+Lebron used to be pure magic at times on the court.....I had visions of this again.

Anyway my point is if you get bored late tonight Gordon Hayward makes his return to Utah *gulp*. And Kyrie is not playing since his grandfather died and he had to attend his memorial today.

So Gordon sans Kyrie in Utah, should be great. I think?

Brad did the unthinkable last night too btw. He BENCHED Jayson Tatum, golden boy Tatum. And he even BENCHED Gordon at the end of the game for Marcus Morris.

Wowww this Boston team is a trip this year.

Reminds me of Irving at times with Dipo. Irving dropped 30 vs. Denver nights ago and the C's still lose.

Just have to try to find a way to get more guys on the team hot, shots don't always fall in.

Dipo though man, the only reason I admit I sometimes try to catch the Pacers.....

You caught Philly at the wrong time though, they were in a slump and were desperate for a statement game.

I am not sure the Pacers will ever win an NBA Championship? Out of my favorite sports teams = Baseball (Cubs fan since 1984), Football (Colts fan since 1984), and Pacers fan (since actually the late 70's when I was real young), they are the only one's that haven't won a Championship in my lifetime. Colts won in 2006, Cubs won in 2016. Pacers did go to the Finals in 2000 winning the East but it's not a Championship unfortunately. All of those Very Good to Great years with Reggie Miller and never won 1, fell short with George, West, and Hibbert as well. It's the Dipo era now so we will see :dunno:.

Shoutout to Cory Joseph for boosting us in that second half after that bogus Thad Young ejection, and Shoutout to Myles Turner for his defense down the stretch saving this game for us.

Myles has definitely been struggling, but games like these show how much of an impact he makes on this team. +20 in plus/minus today. Even though Sabonis has 17 and 11, he was -12. Collison and Bogey also played well today.

We really need our two free agent additions to get it going though. Tyreke has been pretty bad so far this season, and our offense is just not getting McDermott the shots he needs to be getting. He provides nothing defensively, so if he isn't putting up at least 5-6 threes a game, he's a total liability on the court.

Hopefully the four day break we get after Sunday's game against the Rockets gives us a chance to work on some things on offense.

Look at this ridiculous flop that Thad Young got EJECTED for.

Yeah pretty bad, Olynyk should get fined for flopping. This was a much needed win over a decent team on the road. The Heat are Playoff material. Pacers are now 8-5 on the season winning 61.5% of their games so far. Over 82 games that = 50 wins. Tied for the 3rd Seed in the East with Philly.

Turner played some good minutes at the end last night, but man he looks almost Roy Hibbert like on offense right now. If the Pacers are gonna have a great year he will need to get it going on offense.

This bugs me with Philly. I don't know how this will work well with a hot head like Butler on Philly and also spacing/shooting. But I was secretly hoping the Celtics would swap Butler for Haywashed since Irving/Butler are tight.

:violin:

At this point a few orange security cones can defend better then Gordon Hayward.

I still think the odd man out is Gordon sadly and I can't always deny this. I mean last night Irving had to go to a family funeral so he misses the game. Celtics without Irving actually got WORSE on defense. This is not even a joke, Irving has played good defense in a lot of games this year.:panic:

I don't want Philly to get better, the C's own them but still I hate how the east is making all these nice trades for stars like Kawhi and Butler while last night Joe freaking Ingles made Gordon Hayward look bad in Utah.

And ex Celtic Jae Crowder lit up the C's "defense" too. My goodness gracious.....

Anyway thats my friendly Celtics rant of the day.

Carry on.....

    • Just saw a mock with the Colts taking Kinlaw in the 1st then Devonta Smith with the Skins pick, I like that a lot. Doesn't solve the QB problem, but solves 2 others. I'd almost rather go Qb early in the draft and fill other holes in FA.
    • Yeah no. I know the Colts franchise is so used to always having the answer in front of them but this is not it. Jacoby Brissett is not the future of the Colts plain and simple. A fluff piece from SI doesn’t change that. He not special whatsoever. He has clear limitations that aren’t going to fix themselves when everyone is healthy. He’s not bad or anything but he doesn’t scare anyone on the opposing team. Teams are more scared of Winston then they are Jacoby.
    • I’d 100% challenge this sentence. I’ve not seen much, if any improvements in processing from JB from the 2017 year up till this last game. In fact, it could be worse now than the 2017 season. Either way, processing is certainly his worst trait and I don’t think bodes well for a starting QB in the NfL. If only he could get the defenses to respect his game just as an average starter, the game could open up so much more.    maybe our offense should just become the Army-Navy game style. Run run run run run.
    • It's a pretty darn good roster overall. Folks poo pooing this roster simply have a singular and Colts-centric view and little knowledge of the rest of the league. We've come such a long way in a couple years. Sure we have places that still need upgrades but if you compare the units/positions from 4 years ago, the transformation is pretty obvious.    That said, it's a lot easier to improve a very bad roster, and it gets harder as the overall depth and talent improve. Replacing bad with average makes a big difference. Now we're trying to replace the average, trying to build depth behind the good, and bring in guys to eventually replace the aging good.    I've said for a while, I love what Ballard is doing, but his job was easier early on. It's what he does now and in the next couple years as it gets harder, that is what is important.    As far as Reich goes, I like him a lot, but I'm still on the fence with him a bit. I give him a pass for this year as his talent at QB took a major hit. The only thing I'd ding him on is lack of QB development/improvement. I don't necessarily blame him though as I think JB has just hit his ceiling and not sure he'll ever improve some of the basics he struggles with. He has had some real duds in terms of game plans though.
    • If I had to guess, it's not that they necessarily love JB as if he was top tier guy, it's that's there's no clear moves to improve the position through the draft. And even though I think a guy like Andy Dalton is probably a sizable improvement to JB, people aren't going to accept that..
