Everyone needs to realize something while they are complaining that we aren't spending all of our available money... This money will roll over to next year and the year after if need be...  By that time, with a couple good drafts, we could be serious contenders who are just a couple pieces from a long run of Super Bowl contention.   Wouldn't you rather have this money available then, to go after a few big names to really put us over the hump, instead of blowing it all now on mediocre players?

 

Am I the only one who sees this as the plan they have in place?

I really think we should try to get Kendricks off the Eagles. They have negative cap space and are trying to shop him. I'd say a relatively low pick, something like a 5th round pick would bring him here because they have no leverage and it's a good draft for off ball linebackers. He would only have a cap hit of $7.5mil a year.

CB is building a foundation... a strong foundation then when we are in contention for a Lombardi he will have plenty of cap to go after desirable FAs when we have a better chance to win now not when we might have a winning season or might have a losing season.

Would cost us $6m this year and $7m next year.

 

Philly would be responsiblefor $1.6m signing bonus each year.

You are required to spend a certain amount if your total cap, and I believe only do much will rollover. This is to prevent exactly what you are suggesting.

Teams DO do just what I suggested...it's how Jax has had so much to spend the past couple years.

Teams go from worst to 1st often, with a good QB especially. None of the "top guys" this year are worth the $ they are getting...once we have a year or two under our belt with this coaching staff and draft class etc, look for us to spend what it takes to have a contending team for the long haul.

 

Of the "top guys" this year, how many had everyone wanted so badly before this season? Many came out of nowhere in a contract year. Top players don't often reach FA, and none of this year's guys would have put us over the hump. In another year, that may be a different story and there may be better players to sign.

This isn’t up to date there is big drop from us to the next team.  You can see some the other teams players they are reported in signing are not on here yet.  I assume they are waiting for details on how the contracts are setup.

Yeah. By the rate Ballard is stockpiling early round picks, he will need that cap capital in 3-4 years time to keep our own guys.

 

Btw, if you check how recent contracts are structured by a number of teams (especially Niners, Jets, and Colts) you will notice a pattern. There are no backloaded contracts any more. These teams frontload their contracts. Instead of giving high signing bonuses (and thus, backloading and/or creating potential dead money if cutting), they give low signing bonuses and guarantee roster bonuses instead. The structure frontloads contracts while keeps real cash spending at the same rate. And practically no dead money after year 1 (2 for top contracts)..Check Garoppolo's contract for example. His cap hit in 2018 is 37M, and from 2019 and on it's low 20 ish.

 

This new way of cap "bookeeping" helps teams rolling over some of their cap for next year, and will keep them on top of the salay cap list year by year. The Colts are one of the pioneers doing this. I believe we will see the real effect / advantage of this in 2-3 years. (Unless the new CBA due in 2021 will create an entirely different business environment / market, but I doubt so.)

You can use it next year or the year after.  If we love a free agent next year we can offer them the best deal by far if we have the most cap.  We don’t lose it until the 4 year period is over.

Not that I think it’ll happen or any of these guys actually hit FA in 2019.  But that class is MUCH stronger.  Aaron’s Donald, Zach Martin, CJ Mosley, Khalil Mack.  Some of those franchises have serious cap constraints.  Be frugal with the money this year a good draft and sign some guys next year and we are back in the mix.

I get it. I understand it. Two issues that myself and I imagine other fans have with that plan:

1) We are impatient. (This we will get over)

2) You GOT to spend some money on that O-Line to keep Andrew upright.

Man do we??  We’ve put ourself in great position to get Nelson.  I believe Buffalo is going to trade up to 2.  Also, we have 3 seconds if we need to trade upnto get hernandez.  Yes we’d be starting 2-3 rookies but I have a feeling this is going to be an up tempo rhythm offense with quick passes.
