Yahoo! Michael Silver: Irsay Moving Forward With Qb Luck

Why wouldn't he? He'd be returning "Home" to New Orleans, have multiple SB's under his belt and be able to retire in Elway fashion as the greatest to ever play the game.

Because for that scenario to happen, he's likely played 2012, at a higher level than he has since pre-injury, and the competitor inside him would want to continue to play. Which is partially whey he signed a 5 year deal in the first place.

I do not see him signing a 1 year victory lap deal, that would only insult him and invite him to revisit what he told Irsay before drafting him.

I have been trying to start a rally to keep Peyton Manning, no one seems interested. Then tried to get a Peyton Manning Appreciation Day, Mayor said no. What the heck if the fans don't care, why should I? If this were a real big league city fans would be up in arms over other teams trying to steal the Best QB in history. But oh no not in Indy. They act like little sheep afraid to say anything. It's disguesting. Wouldn't surprise me if Peyton went elsewhere, after the lack of passion I've seen it would serve us right.

You should probably write a letter.

Not quite. He could play at his 2010 level and with improved running game and defense and could win one. He signed a 1 year deal with a 4 year option.

With the intent of playing 5 years if healthy. If he's healthy he will play more than 1 year.

That's not entirely true. He could feel after this year his body would be starting to catch up to him and retire before he stops dropping from elite level.

That's always an option to where something could have happened over time, but by saying he was healthy, an elite level was given.

So so. I doubt if anyone cares.

Perhaps you'll get a better response from your reader if you don't start off by calling them a disgusting sheep.

I mean if you want to, you could say he's been dropping off since 09' and even in 09' his INT's were up more so than normal "Peyton" levels. Healthy and playing at an Elite level are kinda different to me. Elite is Manning 04-07.

March 8th needs to hurry. My brain hurts!!!!!!!!! :blah:

March 8th isn't going to be the end of this because then it will just become a debate of if the Colts did the right thing and rehashing of what they could have done!

Which is also why I said he would need to play better than he has been to achieve a Super Bowl in 2012. He's been playing hurt for the past 4 years or so.

March 8th will only be a peak or a valley depending on a person's views of the situation. This won't go away for years.

Eh no. Like I said, he could play at the same level as 2010 and still be on the track to a Super Bowl with a much better team. This years team has the chance to really overachieve its 1st year out with Peyton at the helm (Similar to 09' with a new D coordinator and new HC). Overachieving could=SB

I fall in the boat, I just want it to be over. Don't care how it ends just need this to be resolved.

Stay calm

OC....IT'll be over in a few weeks and you are going to like how it comes out..

We cant really lose either way..

Like GoC says..its just a debate over which good thing is better...

That last part is a possibility, but I believe that he would play better than 2010 to happen, and I believe he will play better than 2010, whether it's here or somewhere else, as long as he is healthy.

I would like to see Peyton back for 1 more year. Greatest tactician I have ever witnessed. Luck is great and I want him to but as someone that is paying I would rather see Peyton then Luck next year. Sure that can't go on forever but if Peyton can restructure I would love to have him back for a couple years. I also would rather get something for Peyton than NOTHING. One thing I think everyone believes about him is that he is going to come back working harder and being more motivated than ever whether he is here or somewhere else. I would rather have him here for a year or two. At the very least trade him for draft picks or a player and picks. Why would that be a bad thing? Miami, Washington, Seattle, Cleveland, Arizona, Kansas City, New York Jets and perhaps even San Francisco could have interest. Seriously RG3 is only going to one of them. Matt Flynn perhaps to another. That leaves the rest without a franchise qb. Sure Peyton would be a stop gap or someone to push you over the top if your like the Jets or 49ers but what better stop gap then Peyton compared to someone like Rex Grossman. If mediocre Carson Palmer is worth a first rounder and second rounder than Peyton is easily worth a first round pick by someone. We may have to pay his salary this year but wouldn't after that and if he restructures and stays salary wouldn't be a factor. Point is I don't see any way Peyton makes us worse off by staying. What if he became a free agent and signed with Houston? He could easily beat us for the next 3 years and possibly win multiple super bowls. It could happen. I would much rather have him than play against him and definately would rather control where he goes and get compensation. I just don't know how you let someone like that walk away for nothing.

It is not feasible to trade PM. The only way to do so, would be to pay him the $28MM option bonus due March 8, and then find a team that will pay him about $9MM a year for the next 4 years and have the Colts be saddled with $38.4MM of dead cap space, which represents about 1/3 of the total team cap. And you want to do all this for a couple of draft picks?

I think he knows that or maybe he doesn't but I see where he is coming from. It just seems stupid that we will lose Peyton and get nothing but a dead money cap hit if he is released. I'd want atleast an extra draft pick or something if we lost him but alas that wouldn't be the case. Hopefully Peyton stays.

they're not taking a QB #1 overall to sit him two years. Take that statement as whatever you want but you can bank on it.

Don Banks (Sports Illustrated) said he got the impression while talking to Irsay that he genuinely wanted PM back; but not beyond a one year 'victory lap' type of deal.

My guess is this is probably accurate--one year for the fans to say goodbye, ready Luck, attendance and team coverage via ESPN is heightened b/c it's Peyton's last year in Indy. And why would PM want to agree to that?

Because he said he wants to retire a Colt, not a lot of gray area there.

I disagree. The manning of 06-10 in my opinion was the highest level of QBing i have ever seen. He had no Oline and no run game at all. His team got worse and worse, to the point of hardly able to win a game. And he still got them to the playoffs every year. You couldnt see his higher talent because of the less talent around him but he brought his game to a whole new level.

Actually, there is precedent of players being traded back to their old team for one day, so that they can retire as a player of their old team.

Yep and yep. Made me laugh just thinking of the possibilities......

I hate it when someone uses reason and logic to follow up an unreasonable and illogical statement.....again the doubts enter the mind.

I really was hoping he would be allowed to come back after restructuring his deal. Clearly everything was set up for us to make a run last year with Mathis, Wayne, Saturday, and Garcon's contracts all being up and the Super Bowl being in Indy. I think we were going to face trouble this year with the cap regardless. Being able to draft Luck no doubt Peyton will have to redo his deal to stay..that is a given. What isn't a given is if he is willing to do so will he be allowed back. Seems to me that many people don't think he should. I don't understand that. Whether he stays and plays, signs and is traded, or plays a year and is traded I just would like to see us get something for him if we are going to let him go. He would be very valuable to another team and I am sure worth draft picks. Without Peyton we aren't going to be a playoff team anyways so by at least trading him we get more picks to build with..even if we are a little handicapped this year against the cap we wouldn't be able to resign some of those free agents but could draft replacements. I am not 100% sure how the cap works. I know if he is just left on the roster and doesn't restructure we would have to take the 28 million cap hit but if he is traded the 7-9 million base salary is owed by the team that he plays for. Not what I would want...I would rather have him back after restructuring his deal and in a year or two trade him or let him retire and have Luck replace him but to let him walk for nothing....thats hard to swallow. Cincy got a 1st and 2nd round pick for Carson Palmer who isn't even in Mannings league so 28 million for the rights to a first and second round pick?? To me thats debatable. Certainly I think Luck could use some more young talent around him or at least a veteren like Peyton to learn from. It isn't my money but I won't be buying tickets this year if Manning isn't playing. I love Luck but we aren't going to the playoffs for a few years with him at the helm. I will root us on no matter who we have but to pay that much money for tickets I expect more. Once we have built a team I will be right there.
